Poll: Calling your Parents by there First name?

I call my dad, dad but I've always called my mom by her first name, calling her mom sounds weird to me.

I call them by their first names, maybe it's because I've been brought up bilingualy meaning that I was never sure wether I had to call them mum and dad or vader en moeder. No matter who was talking to them Clare and Mike was always right so I just stuck to that as a kid.

At home I use nicknames/petnames for my parents (mom/ma, pop/pa just seems so dry IMO, I went with something more personal/affectionate).

But in public, my parents have always told me to use their first names for one simple reason:
If I'm at the park and yell out "Mommy", how many women are going to come running?
Yelling out my mother's first name, only one woman will ever come (I've never met any other women that share my mom's first name).

I dont know how people can call their parents by their first names just seems wierd to me, my parents will and have always been known as Dad and Maman (my mother's french)

I can honestly say that i have never called my parents mom or dad, but that may be because im not english, hellooo!

It's a bit like "Mum, mum, mum! MUM! Heather!" "Hm? Yes Tom?"

I think she's just learned to tune out non-emergency related cries of "mum." I think think that's reasonable.

Just thought i'd quote this because we have the same name.

Anyway no, it'd be far too weird to even consider calling my dad by his name.

Hey, there are worse reasons to quote somebody. Besides, it's a great name.

Mom and Dad, here. But my Mom had five kids, so she kind of drowns out when you are calling for her. Every time I visit her and she's gazing at the t.v. or just isn't hearing me call her, I'll call her by her first name and she'll look up. She just kind of dazes off....

A few more years, we can start calling her 'vieja', as we did my Abuelita. It means, 'very old' or 'ancient'. She'll love that , I'm sure.

Haven't called my mother "mum" in years. I always call her by her first name same with my dad. I do not know why I guess it is just a habit that sticks around.

My mother does want me to call her "mum" but I just never do it.

Nope, my father is neither Van Hohenheim nor Homer Simpson. How can your mom get your name wrong? Didn't she name you? I mean, if my mom got my name wrong, I would assume I was the one who got it wrong since she came up with it...

It seems really creepy to me, and suggests a seriously dysfunctional relationship.

I mean if you have terrible parents or perhaps merely disinterested ones... I guess. It just seems kind of sad.

No, but should I ever have children, I will raise them to call me by my name. It is just more personal.

I know what you mean, but think about it: It's actually far less personal. Everyone in the world is going to call you by your name. Only your children will ever call you father or mother.

I've always known my parents as "mum and dad". If I started calling them by their first names, it'd feel weird. It's like your sibling or life long friend changing their name. It would take ages to get used to it.

OT: No, I consider it quite rude to call my parents by their given name. It is always "Mum" and "Dad", and always will be.

My parents raised me, to call them by their first names.

I've never called them anything else.

Im 18 and i still use the Estonian equivalent of mommy.

I don't. I really try to avoid calling anyone by their first name.

Also, it's THEIR, not there. Their is word showing ownership.
