God, I think these are idiotic. Incredibly idiotic.
The thread? or the leashes? because if it's 1. then I have to disagree I believe we have a nice selection of different opinions and discussion here and for 2. I agree.
Oh, the leash. Treating a child like a pet is absurd and degrading.

the problem is a lack of ADAM in this modern non-steampunk world of ours

"Until Adam, you could no more domesticate a child than a boa constrictor."
Could you explain that a little further? I have absolutely no idea what that means. :(

So you put leashes on kids in america?

I live in Norway, and I've never even heard of that up until now.

Why do you even GET kids when that is your only way of controlling them?

I have two kids, and what people have to understand is some kids you see on these things can have a mental disorder, they can have ADD and have a hard time listening, and the parents don't want their kids running into traffic and getting killed. It's a safety thing. Have you ever tried crossing the street with 2 or 3 kids, especially under the age of 4? Ain't so easy.

Also, parents don't want their kids getting snatched up or anything. People that are so vehemetly opposed to child restraints just don't get it, and probably don't have kids of their own. Or, maybe they have incredibly well behaved children, and if that is the case, great for you.

I was on a leash; I think its a good thing. I mean, no matter how obedient a small child is, if they saw something exciting, they could easily walk in front of a car, or something like that. If the child never really needs it, then the effect of a leash is null.

Anyway, why would you have a pet if you don't treat them with respect? A leash is there for a dog not as a sign of subservience, but for safety's sake.

Its disgusting. How in the world can you a treat a human beign as a fucking dog? So what if you dont want to lose them or they are bad-tempered and destroy stuff or whatever. You can't do that to a kid. If your kid is an evil little bastard, its the parent's fault (yes you, Adrian). I'm totally against this.
You're not treating them like a dog, guy. You aren't walking them to go take a shit and them giving them a biscuit. You're walking them around areas where they could endanger themselves. They are kids, and they don't know better. Try telling a 2 year old not to run across a street, and let me know what they say, because it'll probably be something like "badaboof".

So what if you don't want to lose them? What kind of parent would you be with that mindset? Maybe not a bad one, but things can happen, and do all the time. I don't use child harnesses, but if one saved my kids life, I would be damn thankful.

Also, mental disorders or simple childhood curiosity are not the parents fault. All it takes is a couple seconds for a child to get away from you, and be hit by a car, and killed. When you're dealing with multiple children, especially, you need to understand there is a lot going on at once, and you can't always have eyes in the back of your head. When things like that happen, it is a tragedy, and you can't walk up to the parents of the dead or injured child and say "hey, moron, what were you thinking?" all the time, because the fact of the matter is any good parent is trying their best to keep their kids safe.

I'll admit I didn't think of this until now, I used to "watch" my cousin when I was about 5 (I was a pretty mature kid at times) while the adults were in the lounge talking and wiggles guitars to the head hurt...alot.

Although not trying to be an ass here but isn't ADD a mentally created disease? it can be overcome if a person tries (to my knowledge) and even then geting children to listen in general is a ass-pain.

Anyhow it's nice to hear some more pro-leash points of view for a proper discussion.

Most of todays parents are shit. Their little snot nosed hell spawn need to be controlled more tightly and for the love of Hades, when they fuck up, need a smack across the head. The arrogance of many five to ten year olds these days are astounding.

I personally don't know if a younger kid would even realize what is going on, but if it was me it would be embarrassing and degrading. I would never forgive my parents if they did that. However 6 year old's probably don't care. I don't think it's so bad for toddlers and really young kids like 2-4, but much older than that and it's pretty strange.

Umm....why all the hate? It's actually a good way to teach your child how to walk without allowing them to walk too far. In a sense, it can give them a little bit more freedom to explore surroundings at an early age...

I always thought that shopping cart child seats were the worst form of torment imaginable anyway.

This is what we tend to call "dehumanization". By putting your kid on a leash, you as a parent are dehumanizing your own flesh and blood. Seeing your kid on a leash, society will think less of you as a person. I've never seen a kid on a leash, but the very idea is incredibly disturbing.

I'd have to say that a child-leash is similar to a dog's muzzle: it's a warning.

Both probably say, "Hey, watch it! I bite!"

As opposed to a fucking marsupial in a supermarket (read my above statement)? I understand, if the kid is older than 6 and hasn't learned to walk with you, there is a problem, but as far as toddlers and small children up to 6, why the hell not?

First of all, no one should be asking little kids to walk by themselves in the street or in a crowded store. Either hold the child or keep them close to you.

In my opinion, I believe a good parent will do something better than hook up their kid to a leash. It shows how lazy and awful the parents are.

I respect your opinion though.
Always the best bet: leave the small kids at home. Too bad its harder to afford babysitters now.

actually the shopping cart child seats arent bad. Its not leashes really. Your not forcing your kid to wear something that treats him/her as a dog. plus atleast with carts its fun. I still wish i could ride them.

EDIT (direct answer)-

That depends on where you live. Shopping cart seats when out in the sun/rain/snow all day are still the worst thing possible.

Um...as I recall it was more fun to sit in the cart facing forward then be staring at mom all day.

SIDEBAR: I like how some stores are doing more child friendly carts that face forward so they can see where they are going.

I say using leashes on children is only acceptable if the child has some sort of mental problem.
