I don't think I've ever met anyone who's gone out to conform to society, to be like everyone else. Usually people just act as they want to act, and end up around people who are similar to them, because hey, they get along. Are you sure that people don't think of you as a conformist for the way you dress? Being a non-conformist for the pure sake of it doesn't make sense, be yourself, and be comfortable in yourself, that's all that matters.

I don't like conformity, mainly because it takes away self expression and replaces it with 92% of people looking EXACTLY THE SAME. Now looking at anyone under the age of 20 I've realized that there only two real looks for people. One is a hip-hop look that normally consists of unusally baggy pants and hoodies and the metal-head look which is usually a band T-shirt, jeans, usually something with leather and odd accessories like studded belts and wrist bands. Now there are certain things that that vary from these styles but they're just branches of it. Like Goth and Emo are similar to metalhead and jocks usually look like the hip-hop group. There are only two types of people that don't fit in some way to these two. Nerd (no offense to any out there) and people who just make their own styles. Nerds aren't conformists because most are socially inept except to those they relate to in their interests. (To make it clear when I say "Nerd" I mean the definiton given in The Big Picture as somebody who has fanatical devotion to something that ultimately doesn't matter.)To look at the other side of this, I have a friend who wears a top hat, a monacle, a pocket watch and a trench coat. He made his own style. Which is admirable. He chose not to bend to conformity of others. I also realise that a lot of these people that do conform are usually in the mind set of other people they conform with, as to say they think very much alike. Now I'm slightly guilty of this myself. I'm the standard metalhead who wears studded belts and band T-shirts and I think what most of them believe as well, but that's because I already did and not because I want to fit in.

All that to say, do you consider yourself a conformist and do you think conformity is bad?
First of all goth is not an off shoot of "metal" style because what you call "metal" style and goth style are very different. Secondly some conformity is necessary especially in a professional environment where serten standards are expected.

I'm not a conformist, but not because "I refuse to conform!!", its just because I am who I am. Its just the rest of this world its going the opposite way.

God? Real
Church? Boring
Science? Awesome!
Sports? *puke*
Drinking? What's the point?
Skinny women? Gross
Fat women? Hotness!
IQ? High
Homophobic? Not in the slightest
Sex? Unnessisary
etc...

You know, its no wonder when I start to talk to people I come across as odd....

Heck, I think that list will rub someone the wrong way :p

Sorry!

One chooses how to dress, people yelling about conformity and mainstream culture destroying society are either arrogant or massively ignorant.

If someone doesn't want to dress to stand out shouldn't have to. Some people prefer to go unnoticed and conform. I don't really mind how someone dresses unless it looks absolutely retarded (mismatched colours etc.)

Also if something is popular it is likely also good/functional/enjoyable. There's a reason it became popular afer all.

Bah! Who cares?! Every individual is unique. There´s too many people worrying if they are conformists or not.Just be yourself. If you happen to look like someone else, dont panic. That pole has a serious lack of options, so i didnt vote. Oh, and whoever might want to start accusing others of conformity should drop that "holier than thou" attitude. It´s annoying.

I don't really care either way.

If I'm regarded as a conformist then that is fine by me, isn't going to change who I already am.

When I saw the title I thought this was going to be about Merton's Paradigm, ah well Conformity other than deviance? Well I don't see anything wrong with it people join a group or fashion and conform because they want to or feel the need to it's like a support structure or a form of stability really to be a part of a group.

Am I a conformist? does it matter what I think it's the opinion of the person looking at you that decides what you are to them not what I think about myself, so it's up to you guys I guess.

Conformity is simply a lack of individualality or you trying to fit in because you don't know what you're like.

I don't quite fit into any dress code or prescribed tastes and actions, but I'm 24, I expect under 18's maybe under 20's to conform to some style, because thier friends do, but mainly because they're still finding out who they are, most people go through phases (I didn't, but I'm speshul) each phase brings you closer to being a rounded individual when you're in your mid 20's.

To either explicitly recognise or deny your own conformism you're first acknowledging the existance and relevance of different cliche subcultures, in other words you're "labeling" people. That in itself is about the most conformist thing to do I can think of.

That makes the whole subject of conformism a retarted one. In social studies or the investigation of the so called subcultures conformism may have some relevance, but on the level of the individual it does not. Exactly who we are or how we wish to portray ourselves is influenced by so many factors that it's not realistic to attribute this influence to conformism, let alone to judge people based on assumed conformity to a subculture.

I take pride in who I am, I wouldnt really call myself a conformist, I buy most of my clothes online, but the rest I buy at HotTopic which I am fully ashamed to walk into, but its the only place because the indie clothing stores in my area were run outta business, Im not some goth though, Im more like a punk though, so conforming isnt a big deal, its more of hating authority for guys like us (hypocritical sometimes :p)

This reminds me of a time I had an argument with some emo/goth/scene chick about how kids in JROTC were less conformists than they were. The whole time she was going on about how because we wear uniforms we are conformists. Until I pointed out that they all go to the same stores, buy the same crap, and act the same way. At least cadets have off time and act different. All the non-conformists do is conform to something different to everyone else, and usually a lot more than the so called conformists. Do I consider myself a conformist? No, but I do wear a lot of clothes that are considered stylish because I like how they look.

Is it funny that most of the posts in this thread read in one of three ways? It's either: a)"I hate conformity/I'm unique, here's what I wear", b)"Trying not to conform is a form of conformity," or c) "Uh, why does it matter? Just be yourself" (with some overlap for 'b' and 'c').

You have higher expectations that I do. Also, I had to look up Merton's Paradigm, and I'm glad I got to learn a little sociology as a result. Thanks :)

I wear a fedora and a long coat. I guess that puts me in the non-conformist crowd, but I really can't be arsed to give two shits about it.
I just look damn good in it and that's why I wear it.

BTW, non-conformists turn out to be more conformist than other people.
It's true, you know! [http://www.cracked.com/article_18916_5-reasons-why-anticonformity-worse-than-conformity.html]

I've always noticed that the most fervent "non-conformists" tend to be hipsters and goths, two cliques I consider almost professional conformists.
