ok you're right I've never read them but that's not really what I'm talking about

it wouldn't be an academic pursuit to read a story book over a text book
no matter how intellectual the story was
Because?

I'm not arguing the rest of your point, I kinda agree with it, it's just the idea that comics can not be intellectual pursuits that I'm trying to demystify. Comics like the ones I mentioned above are incredibly intellectual. You could write entire scientific dissertations on each of those books.
I haven't read them but would you say those comics are just as (or more) informative than an article in a scientific magazine on the same subject matter?

if you had to write a research paper on that subject would you read the comic or an excerpt from a text book?

I'm not down saying the intellectual value of a comic it would probably be better (or at least less clouded by story line) to get the info from a different source

it wouldn't be efficient to pick around the story for the information you want

Doing what everyone else is doing just for the sake of being the same or "normal" is absolutely retarded. Though it's not likely that you'll go through life being completely unique, there have been to many people for something not to have been done.

I agree. I've been thinking about social evolution a bit recently although my thoughts on it're probably worth little because of my ignorance of the area.

Nobody cares what you wear.

tt: i picked a little. You can't get past schoolage without conforming a little.
Oh yes you can.

I stuck through Physics, despite it having about 4 people in it, and dropped Biology, despite it having about 80 people in it. I had a completely non-descript wardrobe that clashed a bit, responded to requests to conform with angry glares and the occasional "Cthulhu fhtagn" (yes, really), ran the school choir mostly by myself, left with the school's first "Best Vocalist" award and a spot on the honor roll.

I even had some friends!

And I didn't do a single thing because it was "cool".
Thats not what i meant. What i meant was that it is easy to not conform in school, but it gets difficult afterwards.

I just dress comfortably. That tends to bring me in line with everyone else in a lot of ways, but I don't go out of my way to look like everyone else. For example, I don't buy labelled clothing (Mark's Work Warehouse ftw) because it's fifty bucks extra. Actually, the kids who go out of their way to look different are the worst in my mind. Because you're still dressing on the whims of everyone else and you're still going to have a collection of people who dress exactly like you anyway, yet everyone else are the sheeple.

I'm so non-conformist, I.. wait, that's stupid. Being different for the sake of being different is stupid. If you're going to be different, then do it because it's what you want to be, not because it's the opposite of what everyone else is doing.

Because then you're not being different, you're being a tool, and there are a lot of tools in the world.

I never really thought about it. I just do whatever I want to while trying to not be a jerk.

To say that I'm a non-conformist would imply that I actually care enough to know what conformity would look like so I can not emulate it, but I genuinely do not give two shits about what anyone else thinks regarding my appearance - I wear what I wear because A) I have it, and B) It was clean.

Seriously, I don't even buy my own clothing, I get a family member to do that for me sight unseen, and then I reimburse them for it; I have no idea what message my typical apparel supposedly tells about me, and I couldn't be arsed to care either.

Normally when anyone says they're not a conformist, they usually are.

that being said, I'd say I am a conformist, where if I werent I'd be Anarchanist. But I work in and around the rules/social norms to make things personally different for me while never over stepping the boundaries that would put me in trouble/set me as different and have no one associate with me.

Just be who you want to be because that's who you are. If you are seriously changing who you are just to be far away from 'the norm' you are just an ass.

I used to go out of my way to oppose conformity & not blend in. Now it comes to me naturally. I miss being the only redhead in town. I hung out with goths in highschool, but I wore colors.

I call it unimportant.

What is adopted by the majority of population is meaningless to the individual.
But we are not individual animals. We thrive in social interactions, form bonds which we need to survive. If mankind was all about the individual and what the individual needs, then we wouldnt live in communities, we wouldnt have laws and we would do everything for ourselves. We need conformity the same as we need the few to bend conformity. It is evolution. Evolution of society. The group exists as a whole, then a new idea is formed and is tested by a limb of the group. If it works and is beneficial then it is absorbed into the group. If it doesnt, it dies off. Some things have only a limited use and will die off as there usefullness wains.

MEh, If you live in a house or flat, use electricity, ride in vehicles, eat cooked meat, feel emotion, believe the earth is round, like cats, you are a conformist, minor aethetic changes dont make you different from everyone else.

The whole conformist/anti-conformist crap stops mattering the moment you get out of school anyway. I wear what I like, listen to the music I like and I do what I like in my spare time.

Anyone else find it ironic that this line of questioning comes with a poll...for all of us to gather in and agree on something as a conformity?

Everyone conforms to some degree otherwise society would not be possible. Even people who claim to be non conformists still conform with other non conformists whether they admit it or not.
