Generally, I prefer death metal when it's mixed with another music genre. For example, two of my favorite bands, Opeth and Cynic, are respectively death metal plus prog metal and death metal plus prog and jazz.

No, I don't. And now I like it even less for having "likez" associated with it.

Not particularly. Not the 'classic' death metal that invariably consists of 5 bearded men compensating for their genital shortcomings by naming the band 'Cuntchainsaw Gutmurder', anyway.

I do love Opeth, though.

The only death metal I like is the kind that makes fun of itself for being death metal, examples being Austrian Death Machine and Dethklok.

Nile is my favourite band along with Muse and Paramore. So, yeah I'm a fan of death metal.

No I think death metal and black metal are fucking terrible. The lyrics are horrible and any talent of the band members is hidden behind the cluttered noise of all the instruments together trying to be brutal which I just can't see. The lyrics of one of Cannibal Corpse's songs goes "The skin is peeled off my dick. Done with a razor blade. She begins to suck blood and cum amok," which I find disgusting and sick.

I much prefer Mastodon, Lamb of God, Pantera, Iron Maiden etc.

Not to be "that guy" but burzum is black metal. This only matters to us metal heads so deep in the sub genre game that we bleed distortion.
I know they're different, its just the closest thing I actually have to Death Metal that I listen to, so I put it down here.

I don't give shit what Varg thinks or has done, I love the music, I've got everything Burzum has released. It's just that black metal and death metal are a bit like Ireland and the UK. People treat them the same because they seem similar, while they're in fact vastly different. I thought you were trolling by mentioning black metal in a death metal thread.
See above.

Also, while I do find it a bit unsettling to listen to considering he killed his guitarist, burned down some churches and almost bombed an anarchists society in the name of Fascism, I listen to it anyway, because
A. he's fucking brilliant musically
B.Hes got a kick ass beard
My thoughts on Varg...

Made for a great album cover (pretty sure that was this guy's work. Might be wrong)

Kickass beard confirmed.

Played by Edward Cullen in a movie about him.

Really.

No I don't like Death metal. I like lyrics that actually have some kind of meaning rather than violence.

I like Metalcore, Melodic anything, progressive, actually just about anything with decent lyrics and a good amount of energy (although I do like some slow songs... my music tastes are pretty eclectic).

I tend to shy away from using genre defining words like Metalcore and grindcore and Deathcore and WTFIjustwantedtolistentomusicCore, mostly because of elitist metalhead pricks who think they specific -core is the shiznat, and because I can never get them straight.

Didn't realize that ALL death metal had that silly growling.

If someone doesn't like the genre due to disliking insanely complex (often classical) solos, or do not like 'non clean' vocals fair enough, to each his own etc. Anyone who claims to dislike the ENTIRE genre based on 'Cannibal Corpse' name, or thinking it's all just screaming , you are a narrow minded prick.

Lol? You DO know not all Death metal songs are about violence, right? :D

Anyway, FUCK YEAH! Death Metal! I listen to all kinds of metal, except all that core stuff. I think it's mostly shit. No offense.

But I too prefer melodeath above normal death metal though

Edit: Also, do people who are not into metal actually know the difference between the metal subgenres at all? For example, I had a friend who thinks that all metal songs are about growling, screaming etc. Which is totally not true ofcourse.

Slayer, Lamb Of God, Testament tend to be the heaviest I go for, but occasionally I like a good bit of Cannibal Corpse.

Most of the time it's punk, metal of most types, classic rock, blues, jazz and my very favorite, third-wave ska.

haha yeah, I guess I generalized it a bit. I meant I just tend to not like songs about violence in general, be they Death Metal or Ska or Rock.

I am into prog metal and melodic metal, basically Dream Theater and Disturbed. I will occasionally listen to the Death Metal variety but it is not on my top 5 genres.

But I do think some people take the subgenre thing way too seriously...
You aren't referring to pornogrind by any chance? Cause I love it, hahaha.
Goregrind makes we want to rip out someone's throat. It's THAT good.

I consider these to be under the blanket of death metal, because it's just like death metal except it sounds like it was recorded inside a garbage can. Bands like Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, Deicide, and Cattle Decapitation got me into it originally (after Slipknot of course lulz) and since then I've been lucky to see Cephalic Carnage and Black Dahlia Murder. Though truth be told, I'd rather have Circle of Dead Children over Children of Bodom, anyday. Does anyone here remember Gorerotted? They were awesome.
I wasn't referring to any particular genre really. I just think some are too particular ( like I've heard of cypergrind being used for Agoraphobic Nosebleed). I've listened to some pornogrind (Lividity for the most part) and... it's sick. But I like it.
I've only heard a few songs by most of the bands you've listed there (Cannibal Corpse being the exception). [small]Wouldn't mind seeing Cephalic Carnage[/small].
