I love metal but i love other genres equally. I love classical, blues, jazz, country and even a bit of traditional Irish music.

I know this guy who exclusively listens to metal, though. He doesn't even give other genres a chance, he just says they're shit and that I shouldn't be listening to them. Needless to say it pisses me off.

I get into classical, sometimes Pop (not often), Ska Hardstyle, some Dubstep, recently I've
really gotten into listening to game and movie scores as well.

Metal and Rock used to be the only things I'd ever listen to, but I've diversified a bit since those days.

Well, obviously I have a bit of a crossover into Rock territory. Pink Floyd, System Of A Down, Guns And Roses, Scorpions, KISS etc etc.
A tiny bit of punk, Dead Kennedys and MSI mainly.
Apart from that, I really do listen to almost nothing else, voluntarily anyway. Honestly, I just don't like anything else. What can I say, it's not who I am.
Oh, also classical can always be good.
I think it's because I like "complex" music. I'm aware Rock has some talented bands (I listen to a lot of them), as does pretty much every genre. Maybe I just don't like the style either. There is one Pop singer I don't mind, I forget her name, but she's actually an incredible guitarist. Her vocals and lyrics and everything else is as generic as most Pop, but the guitar is actually really good...
This?
It's the only thing I can think of.

I don't understand why everyone here hates pop and rap. They're both perfectly fine in my opinion.

That being said, I am a massive metalhead, and rarely listen to anything else nowadays (probably just my current tastes). However, I love all other forms of music, except for most country because I cannot stand the way the people sing. It's probably the only genre where every male singer sounds exactly the same.

I listen mainly to metal things, more post-hardcore but still a heavy fan, but I listen to more or less everything. Gotta love some Johnny Cash.

Never said it revolved around me.
No but it was basically implied given what I had previously said. I said it depends on someones opinion that a sub-genre has merit and you were flat out were against it.

Lol no music theory is based on notes played in a certain rythm that makes for a melody.
And you can thank Pythagoras for discovering those notes in the first place, a famous Mathematician who specialized in new discoveries and theories.

Also the different elements of music (such as the instruments being played, vocal style, and so on IS based on opinion. For example if you listen to Symphonic Metal one may not know enough to categorize it and just label it simply as 'Metal'. Another person might hear the symphony and label it with their own opinion, thus the sub-genre is formed based on additional musical elements. Technically we are calling it the same thing, so to make a concession; music theory is based on opinion AND the stuff you said. The invention of music is a human notion and we humans often get confused as to what is and isn't music. Therefore = opinion. The very fact that we fail to agree on what music IS in the most basic of terms proves that.

This is aesthetic, and yes male and females voices are diffrent. But males and females can produce the exact same notes with their voices, kinda like you can play the same melody on a guitar, and a piano, and on any other instrument.

But despite the diffrent sound beetween male and female, there has never been a genre based on that.
Yes men and women can produce similar vocal patterns but on AVERAGE they don't which is why sub-genres are produced in the first place. They cater larger groups of similarities whether they be the style, the speed, the note setup (see Mathcore), the vocals (see the difference between Death Metal and something such as Emo or Glam Rock).

http://youmix.co.uk/radio/?genre=Diva+Metal
This website tells you a few stations that contain 'Diva Metal' however the description is vague. Often on music websites instead of including a specific female genre the website adds tags such as 'female vocals' to differentiate as seen here:

http://www.last.fm/music/Evanescence?ac=evanescence

You will notice the words 'female vocals' is right next to the genre tags. Surely it was put there for a reason. The reason? It made sense to SOMEONE. Anyone. Just because it wasn't you doesn't mean it isn't allowed to be differentiated.

Its not that i dont like it, its just that "Diva Metal" isnt based on any music theory, therefore it isnt a valid genre.
But it is based on music theory. It produces an entirely different sound. If you were to break it down to the bits of data streaming through your computer there is a fundamental difference between a male and a female singer.

Also, saying a genre isn't valid when someone else thinks it is defeats the purpose of a sub-genre. You either allow all sub-genres that have significant difference or you label all of them the same. Let's just label all 'Metal' as 'Metal' from now on. Or how about just 'Music'. Yeah that makes sense.

Like i said, those 2 people can live in their little bubble and remain clueless about music genres.
How ironic because that's what it is happening to you right now! Genres of music change over time and when they change too much, entirely new sub-genres are formed. By insisting only on the genres you know you are being close-minded to the possibilities.

Ergh... if you don't get it you don't get it. Say what you want to say, I'll read it. Then I'm done.

Only an idiot listens to just one genre, it's like only having sex with one person your whole life and claiming it was the best sex in the world

Yes. God I lovee music. grindcore, sludge, death and stoner are my favorite metals. Black metal needs some updating IMO (but I love 1349). But I love classic rock, blues, jazz (grew up in the city Dean Martin was born in), and yes... country. But I listen to some hip-hip (Tech N9ne, Wu-Tang, Ice Cube).

I don't really consider myself a "metalhead", even though I frequently take it upon myself to fill the role of a Metal apologist and listen to a great deal of music that falls somewhere under the broad umbrella of the genre. Also at least one individual that I've never actually met has referred to me as "something of a resident expert on the topic of obscure Metal", so evidently I know a fair bit about the subject.

But I don't consider myself a metalhead, for the same reason I don't label myself with any other limiting musical brush - I have extremely eclectic tastes when it comes to my aural entertainment. Just ask this random stranger who commented on my Pandora page:
Guy I don said:
I honestly have never seen so much variety in someone's music taste. Kris Allen AND Scar Symmetry? You sir, are a better man than I.
See, for all that I come across/freely admit to being a massive music snob, the truth of the matter is that I enjoy quite a bit of music that your run of the mill elitists wouldn't be caught dead listening to - I may write a series purporting to be a definitive guide to good music that focuses almost exclusively on obscure material, but that's simply because I reason that you don't need an egotistical stranger on the internet to tell you about good well-known bands.

No, the only thing I really care about in the end is whether or not any given artist/band/what have you is good, and there are very few genres of music I consider categorically without merit. On the flip-side, that also means I'm not an unequivocal fan of any particular genre of music - I adore Classical but find music from the Neo-Classical period boring and forumlaic, I'm partial to a good bit of Electronica but you couldn't pay me to listen to some of the sub-types, and so on; I don't like things because of where they can be slotted into a musical classification scheme, I judge everything on its individual merit alone.

That I judge the overwhelming bulk of music produced over the past century to be irredeemable trash when viewed on its own merits is where the snob bit comes in really.

But to get back onto the topic of other genres of music I enjoy besides Metal, I'm not actually going to list those. Mostly because that would take me all day and I'd have to qualify everything and who has that kind of time? So I'll just randomly stick the last few songs I listened to into a spoiler box and let you see the diversity of my interests for yourself in a way that involves way less effort!
