After War Gundam X
Zeta Gundam

Funny... have you ever traced out the time line for Gundam and its popularity? Have you ever noticed that the most popular ones are always the one to come out after a real war? I think that alone speaks volume about the quality of the series, and how the producers actually inject meaningful messages into those.
The original Gundam, needless to say, addresses WWII. I believe Gundam Wing is around Gulf War era. SEED must have been around 911. Note how Destiny sucks. And 00 is clearly the War on Terror (hell, they even included that in the anime itself). Similarly, season 2 of Gundam00 lost that charm as well.

That's part of why I think Gundam is a different beast from most anime. Sure, there are quite a lot that are centered around philosophical discussion, and even more that are just senseless (yet fun). But not that many anime are commentaries of real world events.

ps. Anyone here watched Dai Guard?

At best I can tolerate mecha.

Gurren Lagann was fine I guess, Full metal Panic was tolerable just for fumoffu XD, Code geass it was actually decent when they were using the things as pawns in a chess game. But generally a mecha will put me off an anime.

It occurs to me that the Escapist has its fair share of anime fans, and I wanted to know what the site's general opinion of giant robot style anime such as Mobile Suit Gundam is, because in Japan its like their Star Wars, but if you mention it in the west people usually complain about not being able to follow the plot, or at least my friends do.

So do we like giant robot anime? All of it or just Real Robot (Gundam style series which use science or plausible pseudo science to explain the sci-fi elements) or Super Robot (Gigantor or Marzinger Z style series where attacks are performed via voice commands and everything is colourful) anime? What about western mech-based TV shows/films/games?

Also, anybody who can tell me what the thread's title is a reference to gets a special reward... by which I mean nothing.
I only dig Megas XLR, really. Mecha anime can be cool if it's done properly. It can also suck.

You think Nadesico is a parody show? I suppose it does have a lot of aspect that is not very serious, but I don't see what it is parodying. The Martians are a bit of a parody of the genre as a whole, but most of the story really doesn't seem like one.
I always interpreted it as a parody of both mecha anime and its fans, but I could be wrong. Nevertheless, I still count it among my favorite animes. :D

I thought this was going to be a topic on how awesome Megus XLR was.

Anyway I like some giant robot anime, Megus XLR was my favorite (even though it was made in America).

Alright, alright. I like pretty much all mecha anime from the gundam series to Eureka 7, its all good.
Both of those there are great, and I wish there was more of them to watch.

In my opinion, there's nothing better than giant stompy robots stomping on smaller things and fighting other giant stompy things, like aliens, monsters, or other robots. And this opinion is not changed by the TYPE of giant stompy robot. I love anime mecha, or BattleTech 'Mechs.

If it's big, and stompy, and a robot, it's awesome.
