I have to laugh at people saying they don't "blanket term" these drinks.

It leaves me imagining them asking for directions in a supermarket.
"Can you please tell me where to find the coke, pepsi, mt dew, fanta, sprite, dr pepper...
7 up, solo, sunkist... and generic carbonated beverages?"

Australian, we call 'em softdrinks.

Yeqah, tends to be fizzy drink or soft drink in England. (nearly said the UK then remembered the amount of slang the Scots, Welsh, Irish have for things, especially the English people who lump them all together!)

However, any kinda cola invariably ends up getting called a 'coke', whether its Pepsi or tesco's own brand 'value' fizzy ditchwater. Just as most people called anything that plays mp3s an 'ipod' as it's just easier and quicker than 'mp3 player'.

Cheap stuff like the "coke" you find in supermarkets are called soft drinks in Oz. Awesomer (is that a word) stuff like Pepsi and Coca-cola; we just call them that.

You mean soft drinks? That's what we Aussie's call carbonated beverages. Though if you mean Mountain Dew, we call it Mountain Dew.
I've heard Western Australian relatives call them "cool drinks."

Confused the hell out of me.

I call it "Soda" when I'm being general and the actuall name when I'm being specific ("Coke", "Pepsi", "Sprite", "Mountain Dew". It's always "Root Beer" for me though...).

I actually saw a map of the US where it showed what the different parts of the country called carbonated beverages. The South (including New Mexico) mainly called it "Coke" (even Pepsi); the North Eastern part of the country (Virginia up through to Maine) called it Soda along with Calafornia, Nevada, Arizona, Missouri, and Wisconsin; and the Mid-West (from West Virginia and Ohio all the way to Oregon and Washington) all called it Pop. It also gave the percentage of those polled who called it that. The North East Coast had a high percentage for "Soda" (92-95%, except Massachusetts at 69%), while the Plain states (70-85%) used "Pop" more than the Mountain and Pacific state (52-76%). Hell North Carolina was barely in "Coke" territory with its 44%.

Eastern Pennsylvania if anyone's wondering. Saw someone on here who was from the Western part and they used "Pop", guess the East uses Soda and the West uses "Pop". PA was "Soda" at only 52%.

because beer is a wide variety, and nearly all of them taste identical, and those that don't you would ask specifically for it. 'Fanta' can fall under many categories, simply because its the widest orange flavored soft drink, everyone knows what Fanta is, and if they dont have it, they just say no

Here in Ireland we just seem to call fizzy drinks by name. So instead of 'I want a soda,' we specifically say 'I want a Sprite/Coke/Fanta'.
