Needed to have an option for enjoy some of his work but used to like his stuff a lot more. 'Escape to the Movies' is, with the aforementioned exception of when he's made up his mind on a film prior to having seen it, pretty reliable as both a review and as entertainment. The rest of his stuff has gotten obnoxious and preachy. I'm fine with someone having a cause but when they're trying to present their opinion as fact they can piss off.

Yeah, I enjoy his stuff here on the Escapist.

His 'Big Picture' episodes are generally pretty good (recently re-watched them all and thoroughly enjoyed them once he started the whole COMICS ARE WEIRD bit), I tend to respect his thoughts on recent movies (though agree that others that he can focus a bit too much on certain aspects of those films) and also like seeing his musings on Agents of SHIELD.

...and that's about it. I don't follow him on Twitter or YouTube, so I only really know him through his stuff here. And that stuff is generally pretty enjoyable, so... yeah.

Generally, no. He was one of the first contributors I came to the escapist on a weekly basis back in 2010, and whilst I enjoyed him for the first couple of years, around spring of 2012, I just stopped likening him. Not because of any political thing, bug I just stopped enjoying his stuff, and at that point, I started to watch more stuff on TGWTG, which I found more appealing. I did come back from time to time, but I realized I straight up disliked his videos when he leaned more and more political/Social Justice, seeming to lack any awareness to the modern world. Didn't help his assessment on making sonic good was straight up disgusting (Seriously, kill most the cast?), so I just don't like him anymore.

I think how much you like MovieBob will ultimately come down to whether you agree or disagree with his many opinions on everything from Nintendo to gender issues. He's not particularly funny or entertaining on his own, but he tries to make up for it with the sheer magnitude of his knowledge and his willingness to comment on said knowledge. Personally I've found myself falling out of favor with him in recent years, but I still watch his content because I find it interesting regardless.

I don't enjoy him at all. For reasons that Johnny Novgorod has stated. He's insulting to pretty much anyone who doesn't agree with him or his tastes. He's the most biased reviewer I've seen in my entire life. I think movie reviewers should not be biased.

I used to like his work, but my opinion of him has been soured lately by some some of his twitter comments. You can't condemn a group for harassing people and then condone the people that harass them. I've been watching less and less of his content lately, now going to the nostalgia critic instead.

He's something that I like sometimes, but not all the time. Usually whenever things get political-- which often boils down to "c'mon, gang. Let's be better people" I can live without that. We're not his gang.

I also find his tastes somewhat suspect. Ever since I tried to watch Tim & Eric's Billion Dollar Movie-- I had to stop after about ten minutes-- I haven't accepted his opinion will match mine. Often I assume the opposite.

I enjoy him more when he's just talking about something geeky or reviewing the movie and not attempting to play a character.

I think part of the problem is just the way he presents himself. Sometimes it's not just what you say, it's how you say it. I agreed with everything he had to say on one of his videos, and yet, somehow, I still ended up annoyed at the end. If he had a more measured response to things then I could probably find him more agreeable. After all, I like plenty of people I don't always agree with, including Jim Sterling.

I used to like him for his Big Picture show and Going to the Movie used to be a pretty good guide on what interesting movies I should watch, but his behaviour on Twitter has changed my opinion from "I might subscribe to Escapist." to "I wouldn't watch his shows even with AdBlock.".

I think Moviebob is an ok movie reviewer, even though I think he's a seriously petty, bitter, childish, obnoxious and defensive person when it comes to ANYTHING else, as he refuses to actually debate something with anyone. He has his views and that's that. Not a good quality in a critic. I really can't stand that him beyond his role as a movie reviewer. Much as I dislike him as a person, I watch his movie reviews as it's nice to see what other people thought of a movie you saw outside your group of friends. He reads too much into movies for me, and is as un-impartial as can be when it comes to a franchise he likes and clearly doesn't share my movie tastes, but oh well.

I like his stuff. I don't always agree with his views on certain things, but that doesn't make me dislike his work. I have spent a long time in academia, so being exposed to viewpoints I don't agree with is not something I shy away from.

Ah, my opinions on him are mixed enough.

I like a lot of his stuff but disagree with a few of his opinions. (Spiderman movies hello!)

But he does consistently create interesting dialogue, and Ill always respect his knowledge on geek culture, while disliking his sometimes arrogant way of talking down to his audience.

I like his content and that is about it, I can't think of anything I would agree with him on other than the movies he likes. His best quality is that he actually says why he says what he does like in the recent Don't Censor Me video he said The Dixie Chicks did not get censored even though most media started to avoid them and states why it was not censorship instead of just saying it isn't.

Only seen his Big Picture and Escape To The Movies series, so I'll just by that. He's certainly hit-or-miss for me. I do like that he does bring some things that can be pretty insightful, but when it comes to the overall point or messages of his videos, I find myself agreeing with him sometimes and disagreeing with him at other times.

Not really a fan. I find that he can never do a review of a movie he doesn't like without coming across as sneering at anyone who went to see it.

He's also not terribly good at constructing arguments, so reading his column feels like a waste of time. Even his delivery of 'news' seems to be tainted by the stench of the opinion he's desperately trying to ram down your throat.

I really don't like this guy, which is a fact I've never hidden, but I'll try to list his strong a weak points.

PROS:
He has a really good presentation set up. I like it when he keeps a measured, professional tone, and I like his visual style. It manages to be both entertaining and thoughtful at the same time. He's also capable of putting out a large amount of regular content.

CONS:
Unfortunately, I find that he's heavily biased in several ways, and he allows those biases to color his review in negative ways. I'll get politics out of the way early. He's a heavily liberal figure who lands pretty far to the left. And that's completely fine. Unfortunately, on the scale of what matters, he gives the undue weight. He cares more about the message then he does about the actual quality of the movie being produced. As a result he gives films like Whitehouse Down and Elysium a glowing review, while damning anything that bruises his liberal sensitivities. Never mind that said films were heavy handed metaphors with poor acting and 2-d plots and characters, and that they lacked all subtlety. They supported his beliefs, and that's what matters. And this highlights my whole issue with him. He always seems to have an agenda. It may not always be political, but it's there. As a result, I don't feel like I'm watching a fair review of film making. I feel like I'm watching some form of propaganda. I may as well watch Fox news.

His second type of bias is what I like to call fanboy bias. This tends to color his reviews of Marvel and DC films, as well as popculture films in general. This isn't quite so bad, but it does seem to warp his opinions in sometimes strange ways. A recent example would be the assertion that Christopher Nolan criticized Marvel for having post credit scenes. In fact, he never said anything of the sort, as he was misquoted, and even the misquote never mentions Marvel in name. Unfortunately, many feared that this irrational, perceived slight colored his review of Interstellar, which may or may not be true. The mere fact that this was taken seriously, however, is itself worrying. Which leads to the next point.

The quality I mentioned before is slipping. He pads his videos more and more, and often has less to say. His articles are driven by click-bait more then ever. He also seems more likely to get angry and jump on a soap box. which leads to the final point.

He's becoming increasingly unprofessional. His writing is more toxic then ever, and he seems to really hate his audience. His twitter feed is really nasty, and he fully admits that he can be toxic, biased, and stubborn, so long as he pushes his ideas forward. It just feels like he has a massive chip on his shoulder, and he's always angry. While it's clear he holds his audience in contempt, he shouldn't be allowed to conduct himself in this manner in the public eye. A professional would never behave this way. He should hold himself to higher standards.

This pretty much covered it and then some. Recently, I've made a push at not judging people like Bob, Yahtzee and Jim by their personalities/Twitter feeds but by the quality of their videos and with Bob it's like he can't help himself.

I used to really enjoy his work and could ignore his personal opinions that I didn't agree with, but now it's getting pretty hard to ignore. Nothing for nothing, but I wouldn't want to see him canned as much as I disagree with him. I'd just like him to straighten out or at least stop acting so damned abrasive and arrogant towards the more rational individuals that argue with some of his points.

I think I used to like Bob a bit more, and I can still occasionally enjoy his content, but it's growing more rare for me to do so.

Part of the reason for that MIGHT be his lack of professionalism, but I dunno...

I liked him but not enough to follow his other works outside of the Escapist like his blog or that video of his with Navi and the other "Bobs". Granted there are times when I can disagree on him (like that pc episode on the Big Picture).

I third this.

I used to be kind of attracted to what he had to say if only for a passing curiosity (I'm a film buff too just not to the 80/90's obsession kind as I wasn't even born until the 90's) so I wanted to see what someone else had to say but while it was entertaining at first, I just became turned off by his dismissive attitude, aforementioned political views and that he gives generally bad movies good reviews because of something or other on a subjective level that turns it from a review to "I liked it because it appealed to me", which should be left out of reviews of anything, really.

and I mentioned this in a previous post on a different thread but I find his fanboyism downright pretentious, especially when gives impressions that he was a "tortured basement dweller who hates people and when people don't appreciate his nerdism" - so like that think Yahtzee does occasionally but a lot funnier and more relatable.

As others have mentioned though, I go to TGWTG almost every day, at LEAST twice a week because their stuff is just funnier and more honest and open. Also would it kill the guy to review something OTHER than the biggest blockbuster or an indie movie? He missed out on praising Ron Perlman when Book of Life came out Maybe that one can be forgivable. Ehhh... okay, he gets off the hook for that reason if only because there's only seven days in the week and if he reviewed EVERYTHING we'd be here for a long time.

One other thing is that I also agree that his stuff is getting too padded. This past year of Schlocktober was actually very little of him actually talking about it and more watching extended clips because... I guess there wasn't much to talk about.

That being said, I still watch his Escape to the Movies (which I will admit I like that he includes a script now so I don't actually NEED to watch it) if only to see what an opinionated person has to say about it but knowing full well that as a mature adult with a much more open mindset, I'm not gonna take anything he says too seriously and probably enjoy the movie in question regardless.

Critiquing MovieBob makes me realize how little I actually depend on reviews.
