I don't hold open doors specifically for women, I hold open doors (or cede a passageway) to everyone.
Forgot to mention--I had to explain to my friend that that was the trick. If you only open the door for attractive women, they catch on and you look like a jackass. If you hold open the door for unattractive women, or for men, or anyone within X feet, no one ever realizes what you're doing. Or, if they do, they don't mind as much.

For my friends and GF. Sometimes, if I'm in a really good mood, I'll hold it open for strangers. If someone I dislike is behind me, I'll slam it in their face.

That's just common courtesy you open a door look behind you if you see someone you hold the door open.

I push it open far enough so the next person or two can come through, the rest is up to them. Unless it's a disabled or elderly person, in that case I'll help them through.

Always do. I live in a small-ish town, so "thank you"s are rarely neglected, and it's nice to hear that. Also, on some primal level perhaps, I like the feeling of making people feel indebted to me. :p

Little shocked to see posts like "they've got working hands, they can open the door themselves"... while certainly true for the most part, essentially ignoring people behind you is frankly kinda douche-y. /:|

My mother raised me to be nice to people, especially women. Actually, now that I think about it, I don't really hold doors open for men. You lucky ladies.

It's common courtesy, so yeah, I do it whenever I can, mostly when it involves older people, teens can take the door in the face :p

Yeah, it really depends on a few variables. Mostly, yes. Distance, my own personal load (do I have the arms available to open the door?), how many people are coming (I ain't gonna hold it open for, say, a whole room full of people). But yes. It's the polite thing to do.

It would be a social faux pas not to, surely.

It depends on how far behind me the person is. I'd say about 6 to 8 seconds is my usual cutoff point and I'll make sure the door is open when they get to it. I only stand aside and hold the door open if their hands are full or something. If their hands are free, I'll hold the door open behind me for them to follow through.

Of course.
It's the polite thing to do.
Although, I do get irritated when you let people through and they don't even register you're there.
I also have a '5-second' rule: If you're more than 5 seconds away from the door when I open it, I ain't keeping it open.
I'll make an exception if they're carrying lots of stuff.

i do if the next person is close enough, you'd be surprised how often people are surprised that you were polite to them. that little smile and thank you you get makes it all worth it. because you know you just made somebody's day a little better.

I do, if someone is within a reasonable distance anyway. I'm not going to wait for ages.
It's pretty much an automatic response. I wish more people would thank me though.
yeah, so long as they aren't too far away, its kind of a habit. i dont really mind if people dont thank me though, i dont really expect thanks for such a small thing as that, and i get some anyway, so its fine.

If the person behind me is within the distance of 6 yards, yes. Although, a few days ago I held the door for my friend when he was a 100 feet anyway. He felt obligated, so he ran the distance. What a great friend I am- secretly motivating my friend to loose weight :)

As long as its a reasonable distance, the number of people are reasonable and I'm not in a hurry sure I'll open the door.
Edit: If someones carrying/pushing something heavy or has their hands full I'll go out of my way to help.

I always hold open doors for other people. Its common courtesy.

Although sometimes I forget there's someone behind me and then I feel like an ass.
