Depends how close people are, how much traffic there is going through the door, and how in a rush I am.

Yeah, but I've been getting a lot of instances where it's been the really awkward distance where the person is to close for you not hold it open, yet a little bit to far away to where you end up standing there for a good 5 seconds.

Conservation of energy, if holding a door for a couple of seconds lets another through rather than having them have to push the door open again, then we have together proven the benefit of community.

i do. not from any sense of moral obligation though. it's more like some autonomic reflex.
That's why I do it, too. Even when I'm leaving a shop I'll hold the door open as I walk out for a couple of seconds in case anyone's directly behind me. I once made the mistake of holding a door at school when a class got out so I was stood like a lemon as 30+ kids rushed through.

If someone's behind me I'll slow down and hold the door open for as long as I can reach it but I don't stop or anything.

I hold it for any one who is coming through the door or behind me.

However some of the assholes at college just hit the handicap button and go in that way. my issue with that is one time I happened to be walking up to said door so it slammed me in my shoulder and boob.

For me it's situation based, there are some occasions when I don't bother holding a door open for someone.

Mens restrooms, because it's just weird.

Automatic doors, because, well, why the hell would you?

Revolving doors, because, well, how the hell would you?

Fire doors, because I don't want my hands burned off on a door made of fire.

Trap doors, because it's not much of a trap if you're standing there holding it open and expecting someone to fall in.

I hold it open... long enough for the person who's about to cross it to get confident, then hilarity :D

Naw, just kidding, I do hold open doors for others, it gives me the chance to get behind my victims, and then stabbity.

I tend to hold open doors. Habit I guess. Or I see someone behind me with their hands full and feel like being nice and I'm not in a really big hurry. Though thinking on it, even when in a hurry long as the person I'm holding the door for hasn't been/isn't a douche I tend to hold the door.

I hold doors for people within reasonable distance (maybe about five feet away), if they are carrying stuff, if they are dealing with pets or kids, and I'll add another five feet to the distance one of they are a cute girl (because why not?).

Sure I do. If there is somebody close behind, and I'm in no hurry, I'll hold it open for them.

EDIT: To clarify, as there seems to be more than one way to hold it open, what I do is that I enter the room, then hold the door up behind me so to not close it right in front of one. I don't open the door and stand aside for someone.

I do if there close enough behind me and I know the person, if I don't I don't slam the door behind me, I just let it close slowly, I used to hold it open for everyone but when I held it open for a group of girls in my class one time everybody started joking about it and I felt like an idiot.

Yep. Tends to get a bit awkward when you misjudge somebody's walking speed and you end up standing there until they're gone through, like some kind of..door..man.

Yes; and I follow the cutoff distance where instead of being polite it makes you look like a complete titamaboob.

Anyway, yes I do, unless I'm feeling physically ill and sprinting to the bathroom, resulting in my math teacher stopping me to give me a lecture and me vomiting on her shoes.
I take it that's from expirience? :p

And yes, I hold open doors more often than not. If I'm in a rush, I tend to hold it just long enough for the person behind me to get a hold of it.

Also, I allways thank people that hold the door open for me. Just all part of what I was taught as a child I guess.

I hold myself to the same standards I hold others. Therefore, since I want others to hold doors for me, so too should I hold doors open for them, even with arms full.

It's fair.
