hate it for several reasons
1. Tim Buckley is a crap artist. Sure, he can draw well enough so that we can tell one character from another and know which game their from, but he is incapable of conveying a character's complex emotions with pictures.
2. There is an old adage among actors and writers, "you use words only when you can no longer tell the story through actions." As I've already pointed out, Buckley can't tell a story with pictures, so he relies on enormous speech bubbles to explain the character's feelings. Therefore, these bubbles must take up half the page in order to do that.
3. If someone is going to rely so heavily on dialogue and less on pictures, you would expect the writing to at least be good, right? Sadly, this is not the case. Here is an exert from the end of one of the story arcs.
Panel 1
Ethan:...And so I came up with the idea for these coupons...And they worked. But then...well, you know the rest
Lilah: Wow... I can't believe I missed all that. I'm...sorry I missed all that.
Panel 2
Ethan: No Lilah... I'M sorry...I SHOULD have told you what was going on at work. It would have prevented SO much of this. I just...wanted to show you I could take care of things. I didn't want to give you more to worry about. I know I'm not the easiest guy to be with...I make a LOT of mistakes. But I will never stop trying to be a better person for you.
Panel 3
Lilah: We learned the hard way that we HAVE to COMMUNICATE. Not just about the easy stuff, but the tough stuff too. Even if it hurts right?
Holy christ! Does anyone actually talk like this? Buckley goes about the writing with such ham-handed clumsiness that everyone who was following along up until that point will just skip it to see if there's a joke at the end. There's no subtlety! And as my good friend, the Robot Devil once said, "You can't just have your characters ANNOUNCE how they feel! That makes me feel angry!"
