Poll: Do you like RPG's?

Four out of my five favourite games are RPGs.

EDIT: I've seen some comments saying that people like RPGs, but only if they're done well. Doesn't that go without saying? Who would say that they like poorly done games of any genre?

What are your 5 favorite games may I ask?

1. Fallout 3
2. The Mass Effect Series (I can't decide which I prefer)
3. Assassin's Creed 2 (not an RPG)
4. KOTOR
5. Borderlands (wait, that's not really an RPG either. It's a demi-RPG)

So 3 and 1/3 of my favourite games are RPGs.

As a genre yes, one of my favorites but it all comes down to the specific game at the end of the day. I wont love something just because its an RPG. I may be more tempted to play it and may have a higher opinion of it than someone who doesnt play/like RPG's, but bad games are still bad, regardless of genre

May i ask which RPG games you like to play?

Of course, I like to dabble in all if I can, had a huge addiction to final fantasy a few years back, played 10, then went back and found as many of the old games as I could, but my JRPG hunger was quelled a while back when I found that while mostly a good example of JRPG's, the final fantasy series is... how best to put it... the "half life" in a sea of "modern warfares" (prob gonna get chewed out for that heh, can you tell I'm not a big shooter fan) and so a fair number of others, most recently "lost odyssey" didnt live up to my expectations, it wasnt inherenty bad per say, just generic.

So mostly these days its western RPG's your typical culprits like your "dragon age"'s and "mass effect"'s to name the good ones, plus a replay of Oblivion and Fallout 3 I began recently, I unfortunatly fell prey to things like "the witcher" which, while not all bad, particularily after the later patches fixed a lot, was just far to long and far too lost in its own lore for me to really get into it. Seemed to expect a lot of foreknowledge to get the story and if theres one thing I prize in RPG's its the story. Oh and another dissapointment was Hellgate London, such promise, oh well cest la vie.

I fell the need to mention WoW here too, I'm not a huge MMO person but WoW did hook me for a while, up untill endgame in wrath of the lich king showed me the "dark side" (to be melodramatic) of its community. But its odd, even though its an MMORPG, thus RPG in namesake, I never saw it as an RPG in the same sense as I would others like Dragon Age. I guess its the other people in the world at all times and a generel feeling of being disconected from the fiction and the world, like I'm less role playing and more watching from behind the scenes like a child reading a "create your own" adventure book, that broke the RPG potential of it for me. Good game but not really an RPG in my eyes, but each to thier own opinion, different strokes for different folks.

Which is why I'm looking forward to New Vegas, I liked the Fallout 3 Bethesda made, and it seems that it keeps its gameplay, but it won't have the god-awful Bethesda writing and character animations, it'll have Obsidian's dark writing.

As I said, the character animations and writing. I have to say though that they were considerably better in Fallout 3 than in any Bethesda game that they had made until that point. I'm probably too harsh on it, though, since the story really was pretty good, and it kept me playing.

Have you ever played Oblivion? That's a good game and its sort of long, there's a very wide variety on what you can do in game, and i didn't think the character animations and writing were to bad.

Yes, actually. I have played Oblivion. I don't really know the reason I didn't like it, because it's so similar to Fallout 3, and I liked Fallout 3. Maybe it's my dislike of fantasy in general, and my love of sci-fi, maybe it's because I didn't comprehend the leveling system, the only way you could level up was if you'd sleep (if I remember correctly), maybe it was because I didn't like the Oblivion towers (if that was their name), or maybe it's because I like guns.

Yea I liked both, Oblivion because I like the sword swinging, arrow flying, brute against brute type action and the fact that they had so many things ingame you could do (i haven't beaten it yet) and i haven't played much Fallout maybe 2 or 3 hours of it and it was fun I liked the need for actually skill in aiming (besides the auto thing that takes your power away.)

You mean V.A.T.S? I loved V.A.T.S, especially after you get that perk that makes most of your victims explode. It's nice to see someone getting shot in the face with a shotgun and then finding his torso without its limbs, it's just so pretty. [sup]It's not weird I like gore and dismemberment, after all, it's just a video game... right?[/sup]

I haven't played the Final Fantasy Series yet and I played/watched a little bit of Dragon Age Origins [sub][sub]I plan on playing this one soon[/sub][/sub]. I am a fan of MMORPG's as well, however I don't play WoW.

I wouldn't consider it a rant, I found it interesting and insiteful.

If I had to choose one reason why I prefer Videogames over any other entertainment medium it would be the existence of RPG's (and sandbox games) although I used to dislike both genres up until the last year or so. Out of all the movies, TV shows, Books and Videogames in this world very few things cause me to feel a lose after they are over and a good RPG's Does that every time. However I am very picky about what RPG's I enjoy (more so than any other Genre of game). I am generally uninterested in Turn Based RPG's (Final Fantasy XIII barely has enough action for me) and vastly prefer Action-RPG's. Despite my lack of interest in pure Turn-based RPG's I am willing to play both JRPG's and WRPG's, however I vastly prefer the freedom of choice and gameplay style in western RPG's and would rather play a shooter over a JRPG. Even with western RPG's I am extremely picky as to what I like. I would say there are two types of western RPG's, the Bioware style of a more story based game where in the character development has the greatest focus and the Bethesda style where story takes a back seat to exploration. Although I love sandbox games Bethesdas style of RPG can get overwhelming for me and the lack of character development causes me to lose interest in the game. A Bioware RPG on the other hand will keep me interested until I have completed everything in the game and I will keep coming back for the DLC. This is almost entirely because of the story and characters not the gameplay. In conclusion I love RPG's but only when they match very specific criteria (otherwise I only like them).

I knew it sounded like that, but I didn't want to be wrong, and yes I thouroughly enjoyed that part of the game as well.

Sandbox games are open world action games like Grand Theft Auto or Assassins Creed and are called sandbox games because the developers are giving you a sandbox (the game world) to play in.

I dislike Turn based RPG's for a few reasons:

1: the whole idea of taking turns to kill someone seems unrealistic and breaks the immersion level a good RPG should provide.
2: Just not enough action for me. I always enjoyed action games (first/third person shooters and RTS's) until about a year ago when I began to understand and enjoy a more varied selection of game genres and just don't find Turn based games as enjoyable due to the lack of action.

I don't dislike either them but I am not a big fan of Oblivion or Fallout 3. They didn't suck me in the way my 2 favorite games of all time, Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age did (not a huge fan of mass effect 1). As for any Bioware/Bethesda games from previous console generations I can't really comment on them as I only briefly played KOTOR and Morrowind when I was younger. I was 8 when I got my original XBOX and was (in my mind) too young to enjoy the complexities of RPG's and have never had the desire to experience either of those games.

All that the so-called "western RPG" has ever accomplished is to highlight what an inadequate substitute for a Dungeon Master a computer really is. The whole open-ended, non-linear, "blank slate for a main character" paradigm works very well on a tabletop with dice; not so much as a video game.

What do video games do well? Mixing cinematics with interactivity. Hence the sublime awesomeness that is the linear, story-based, JRPG. Preferably with random encounters, turn-based battles, and the tried and true Fight/Magic/Item/Run menu. (No real-time action-RPGs, please. If I want action, I'll play a shooter or a platform, not an RPG. More often than not, blending genres merely dilutes what a game with a single gameplay focus does really well.)

Then, of course, there are MMOs, which aren't so much RPGs or even "games" proper, as they are slot machines where instead of pumping in quarters, you pay in hours of your precious existence on this mortal coil. So, I guess what I'm trying to say here is, have fun voluntarily plugging yourselves into the Matrix, WoW players.

I myself like Assassins Creed 1 and 2 im halfway through the second one but don't have a way to play it. I've never played KOTOR or Mass Effect 1 and 2 but they seem like games i would thouroughly enjoy.

I love RPG's. Mass effect 2 and assassin's creed 1,2 are awesome, though a lot of them get me bored after a while due to mechanics and endless repetative action(dragonage, TES oblivion)

The one I like best is one that wasn't really finished when it came out, hence the crappy fighting mechanics. Which is Vampires: the masquerade.

I highly Recommend Both Mass Effect 1 and 2. Although the second is in my opinion the better one by far, however you should play the first one as well because it allows you to transfer your save data (and the decisions you made) to the second one. These decisions have consequences and help you feel like your decisions actually matter which is yet another reason I love Bioware.

On a different note why can't you play Assassins Creed? Captain obvious is back and he says that your system is broken or otherwise unavailable.
