Question in title.

I hate it because usually i'm playing with a friend beside me or across the world, so I want to just get online and play. But noo I have to go through some arcade mode to get these characters. Street Fighter 4 is great and all, but damn Seth is so Cheap I don't think I'll ever unlock Akuma or Gouken :/

In racing games (mario kart) unlocking characters is a waste o time, just give me all the skins I can essentially put on the car, don't make me waste time. Games where the characters have little differences between each other just make me mad when I can't play as some of them.

EDIT: I'm not talking about removing the unlockable content, I'm talking about making it all available form the start. Its not fair that some people get better gear/characters/weapons than me just because I don't feel like grinding.

Yup! =D
It's something to look forward to, and it feels nice to achieve something you've worked for.

I dislike them in games which are obviously designed for party/multi play, but it's ok when it's games that are single player primarily, as it adds extra challenge.

I always liked unlocking characters. I'm kind of disappointed all the characters will be playable right out of the box for Super Street Fighter 4. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 (although the character selection itself could have been more interesting) had nearly half its playable characters unlockable and me and my buddies loved getting them all. Gives you a sense of achievement and discovery in a game you think you know everything about.

Not if it means that playing on the character I want is my second playthrough. That's never as fun.

Racing games and fighting games are okay, because they're amde for replayability anyway.

It's good in single player because you get the sence of achievement and if they are better in some way it's like a reward. However online you should be able to play as you like.

For me this is a must have feature in games. The only problem being that when you finally get that last ultimate character you dont have anything to work towards. But saying that without unlockable characters there is pretty much nothing to work for except the story and it better be a damn good story in that case

Yes, I do like it. If you want to play with a friend, there are already quite a few characters to choose from, so it's not that bad.

No I pretty much despise it. Theres usually only one character in a game that I want to play as so if I have to unlock them by playing as this other bunch of donkey orifices then I rapidly become disenchanted.

Depends on how reachable the characters are. At times it can be frustrating, but at times you need some kind of reward to keep it from feeling meaningless.

I want to play with friends NOW!
Same with rhythm games which they all now realise.

If people want a challenge they can ask the question when you first make a save like Modern Warfare 2 with "No Russian".

I agree with Furburt. Powerful unlockables are not fit for multiplayer or party games. They skew the experience for new players and give an unfair advantage to people who spend the most time on the game. They are ok as a single player add on, essentially adding a reason to revisit old levels to see how they play with a new game dynamic.

Perhaps a unlocking nerfed weapons would be appropriate for multi player. For example the MP 44 unlockable in COD4MW was a less powerful AK 47 but when you get killed by one you know you got seriously worked over. I like the idea of giving superior players a chance to handicap themselves to show the can still win even with inferior equipment.

If i'm playing a party style game it's annoying that i have to unlock the fun characters by myself and by doing that i feel stupid.

Only in racing games and some FPS (James Bond: Nightfire, Timesplitters). Fighting, no. Its a pain int he ass. It taken forever to finally unlock Devil Jin after 200 consecutive wins. Not to mentiont he pain in the ass Dragon Ball Z games can be with characters. I still need Cyberman..

I like unlocking characters, but online its a pain in the ass when the enemies have the strongest characers and you don't.

I hate unlocking characters (it feels like I've been cheated) but unlocking THINGS is awesome.
