Only in racing games and some FPS (James Bond: Nightfire, Timesplitters). Fighting, no. Its a pain int he ass. It taken forever to finally unlock Devil Jin after 200 consecutive wins. Not to mentiont he pain in the ass Dragon Ball Z games can be with characters. I still need Cyberman..

I hate unlocking characters (it feels like I've been cheated) but unlocking THINGS is awesome.

Question in title.

I hate it because usually i'm playing with a friend beside me or across the world, so I want to just get online and play. But noo I have to go through some arcade mode to get these characters. Street Fighter 4 is great and all, but damn Seth is so Cheap I don't think I'll ever unlock Akuma or Gouken :/

In racing games (mario kart) unlocking characters is a waste o time, just give me all the skins I can essentially put on the car, don't make me waste time. Games where the characters have little differences between each other just make me mad when I can't play as some of them.
If there are little differences, then I agree. But if there are some characters/vehicles that are substantially different, I say bring it on. Example: F-Zero GX (which I'm still having trouble getting ahold of) for the Gamecube. The majority of unlockable cars/drivers were crap, true, but the Astro Robin handled like a dream. It's hull was a bit weaker, but once I unlocked this bad boy I never went back to any of the other cars.

Yeah, its always fun to get a new character, but generally, unlocking a new character means getting very good at using another one... so really all your unlocking is... POTENTIAL...
All jokes aside, yeah I like unlocking new characters but I prefer unlockin new skins for existing characters so I dont have to change my gameplay style (Or unlocking new characters RE4:Mercenaries style where its still the same gameplay but new weopons and new looks)

Also I dont play online and I imagine coming up against someone with a better character that you have to unlock is not funzies.

Why not. More is better than less, and you get the added bonus of a sense of achievement :D

I hate it in things like racing games and fighting games where the character/car/thingy affects gameplay. I DO appreciate it in games like Halo: ODST where the differences are purely cosmetic and may describe feats you have achieved.

Yea i do.
It gives me something to do after the shimmer has worn off.
I like it better than having to freaking buy them with in game money.
I takes even longer to earn money than it does to just unlock them via achevment.

Well, it all depends, really.

If the character is advertised on the box, you should be able to play as him/her from the very beginning. However, it is nice to have a few secret unlockables at the end.

I don't know, it can make things interesting; but it can also be incredibly infuriating. For example some of the requirements to unlock certain characters in Super Smash Bros. Melee where just insane, like to unlock Mewtwo I think you had to play something like 200 vs matches or something like that.

It's something to aspire to, so yes. I wouldn't mind them putting a mechanic like this in an MMO.
