I think its time for a little fanservice.

OT: I have no problem with a little bit of fan service but when it gets to a certain level (like the rosario vampire anime which is a damn shame because the manga has a great story) then it gets annoying

I clicked on the link to this thread thinking we were going to be discussing whether or not developers go too far with making the game tailored to the fans desires.
And now I've just become witness to a terrifying video of an alternate universe where womens breasts have developed angry and violent sentient minds of their own and are attempting to pull free from their former masters to take over the world.

Thanks, I'm going to have nightmares for a VERY long time now...

OT: Yes, to a degree I do find showing up the sexual side of a female character quite annoying, especially when it is entirely possible to imply that a female character has a sexual side without having to have the camera pan up their behinds and have their breasts jiggle like jelly that's been possessed by demons. I mean just have an attractive female character occasionally make flirtatious remarks, we don't need to have them be so ridiculously sexed up that people start to forget that women in the real world don't actually look like that.

So yeah, maybe occasionally it's okay but for the most part it does annoy me somewhat and as that... video aptly demonstrates, there's a little bit too much of it around.
When I was listening to the first song, all I could hear was "I like a, I like a girly guy..."

Usually I don't mind it since, hey, boobies :) But if it gets in the way of the plot or the atmosphere then I don't like it. Like in Code Geass some of thous shots of Kallen were just distracting.

I hate fan service. Cartoons aren't sexy, apparently men can't watch anything anymore without their being a token pair of tits in there (I'm suprised more aren't offended) and it makes me feel inadequate.
How on earth can you be contemptuous of the standards of "men" (who happens to be individuals as well...), yet at the same time feel inadequate in regard to those very same standards??? I'd think disavowing a norm and submitting to it to be somehow incompatible...

I'd agree that publishers seem to think that "men" have an attention span which won't last more than 5 minutes without them seeing some T&A, but that's the whole problem with it!
I was challenging the view point. That's not my opinion, hense the 'apparently' but let's face it, you cannot avoid the fact that 'men' and 'idividuals' are two completely different things, at least where media is concerned, an example is fact that semi naked women are everywhere: in movies, in adverts, in cartoons with a sole purpose to sell stuff to 'men'. Whether it moves the individual is an individual matter, and this is my opinion: fan service is unnecessary in all good animes and is somewhat offensive to most men who are entertained by intelligent, well written anime and do not need a pair of tits attatched.

The feeling inadequate is rooted from being a whiny, little *****. Disregard please.

It's annoying when it gets in the way.

If what I'm watching stops for five minutes to show a scene where two girls get in a bath and start having sexually tense conversation and - for no reason I can gather - end up pinning the other to the ground while I'm waiting for giant undead laser-samurai to kick each other's ass, then yes it's annoying.

If it's just there at the same time and is just sort of happening, it's at worst patronising but ignorable and at best absolutely hilarious.

One piece is a great example of how to do fanservice right because it always comes second to the chracters story and the action. With the exception of nami because that's her character.

I'll wholeheartedly agree that it's unnecessary in all good animes where it's not relevant. That certainly would be most of them, but in my view there are genres where such things are appropriate (i.e. those whose (partial) recognizable purpose is arousal, which those who seek them out are well aware of).

An aspect of "arousal" and "intelligent and well written" are not necessarily mutually exclusive (though I'll admit they rarely manage to fit together in what's actually being put on the market). For instance, check out this excellent review [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.135672-Neutral-Drow-reviews-A-Drug-That-Makes-You-Dream] of an Eroge (Visual game novel incorporating erotic aspects) which is way more than a mere "porn game", but actually manages to tell a compelling and emotionally involving story while still containing (explicit) sex scenes as a (in terms of time very small) part of the game.

I feel quite insulted by the fact that marketers think I'll buy a car just because semi-naked women are placed on top of it, but at the same time I do not shy away from believing that eroticism has a place in certain products; as long as it is I who seek them out, and they're not forced upon me in all kinds of irrelevant contexts. Fanservice has spilled over to all kinds of places where it (sometimes really) doesn't belong, but that doesn't mean there isn't a place for it anywhere in Anime.

I recently made a thread talking about the new anime Highschool of the dead and to my surprise I had several people say the the huge boobs and random pantie shots known as Fansevice turned them off from the anime. I thought huge bouncing boobies and up skirt panty shots was all guys could ever ask for? Is it because when they finally get what they want they realise they dont truly want it anymore? or are men loosen their balls? What do you think?
None of the options really suit my opinion.

While I do not mind a bit of fan service, it should be used in a way it makes sense and it should also be limited. The problem is that most media that uses it tends to use it in excess, thus it ends up being insulting to the mind rather than pleasant/hilarious.

I am a big fan of the Super Robot Taisen series. However, when I watched videos of someone playing the RPG spinoff Endless Frontier, I was put off by the sheer amount of fanservice included. The game even has special attacks for female characters that are designed to show off their bouncing breasts in all their "glory".... -_-

Don't get me wrong, I and many other men like seeing a nice pair of breasts. Afterall, they are one of the most natural sexual fetishes a human male can have. But breasts lose their novelty if you start seeing them at every corner and, quite frankly, even a man will start to feel revolted after a while. Honestly, I sometimes think that fan service is more insulting to men than women, beacuse we are the intended audience and are supposed to "enjoy" this kind of bollocks.

Also, let's not forget that breasts serve a more important function than sexual indulgence:

Not really... I usually just ignore it... The only times when it 'bugs' me is when its just plain outragous... Like a woman pulling a bazooka out of her bosum..

it does bother me but if its in a subtle tasteful way than its fine unlike in rosario+vampire where all the camera angles were specifically thought out to show their panties

You clearly have a far more intelligent opinion on the subject than myself, and I have been close-minded within my opinion on anime but I really have only got what I've personally seen to go by, which really should be expanded on before I go shooting my ignorant mouth off. But no matter, I understand what you mean, some anime are aimed directly at an audience who are watching predominatley for sexual based intentions and there it is more than welcome to stay.

No need for any harshness towards yourself, we've all only ever got what aspects we've seen of a thing to form our opinions on it. I would've written off all Eroge as mere primitive porn games as well until I saw that review. And it's not like my opinion is in any way objective, normative, or based on 100 % knowledge of all facts either. An always open, yet always critical mind is all that really matters.

Seems we're pretty much in agreement on the topic though.

Fan service is about as integral to anime as huge eyes and absurd hair colors. I don't see why it should bother anyone.

Of course, if the anime is based ONLY on fan service, this will likely be obvious right away (cover, synopsis, Wikipedia entry, etc), allowing people who want more varied entertainment to look elsewhere.

Speaking as a 17 year old male, I don't see the point. Sometimes I have no problem with such a thing, but that is rare. I tend to perfer more serious titles in which upskirt wouldn't be fitting to the point all conection to the show is lost. I suppose a lot of it is how I view the material, if it seems like something is there just for the sake of boobs I'll get a bit pissed and feel like the show isn't for me. I've got to admit, I saw the title and thought you meant the kind of fanservice Bioware has being allmost overdoing a bit lately.
