No, of course not. I can make it slightly better if it's done well, though, in my opinion.

It's hardly a game changer. It can improve the game, but it's not essential to the gaming experience.

Gears of War is really, really weird with the content filter on. It isn't a worse game for it, but it doesn't feel right.

It makes a game worse, but not significantly.

*Nine Hours Nine Persons Nine Doors SPOILERS*

In 999, some characters die by having a bomb explode in their stomachs. The game doesn't show you any actual bodies (or rather, what's left of it) aside from some blood-splattered walls, but the monologue goes into all kinds of gruesome details. I thought the game was worse for it.

Well if I like a game because of X,Y,Z and they remove X,Y,Z from the next game then guess what I wont be buying anymore...
The people who go to Ninja Gaiden for the absurd violence and difficulty won't get their desired product with 3 so then why would they buy it.

Maybe it is time for you to sit down and think about this concept for a moment

Gore is an aesthetic choice, and like any other aesthetic choice, it needs to be made with tact. For instance, the plentiful bloodshed in Mortal Kombat, which has always been intended as equal parts homage and parody to chop-socky kung fu flicks of old, adds to the humor that's always been present in the game, whereas the gore in a game like God of War adds to the visceral nature of not only the era from whence it comes, but also Kratos as a character, who's meant to be portrayed as unapologetically brutal. There are a few games, of course, where the gore doesn't quite fit the remainder of the aesthetic. Bayonetta comes to mind, but then again, there were a hell of a lot of things about that game that just didn't work.

Short answer: no.

Long answer: No, and why do people feel the need to put stupid shit in their poll options, why does it have to be "Derp, no" and "HELLS YES!"?

If you need an enthusiastic option at least have a scale. Fuck.

Also, stupid choice options; in this case "Jemima puddle duck" don't add hilarity, they add stupidity.
Have to agree with all this. At the very least make it Really Good Bacon, although I guess when you're 14 "randomness" is some kind of cosmic power that makes everything funny.

OT: No, gore itself doesn't make a game good.

Oh and no mean comments, if someone says they don't like gore in their games don't give them a hard time.

Definitely depends on the game, but in general, no.

Imagine Pokemon with gore. That would be awful.

And yes, I realize that a lot of people probably would enjoy that. But it would be terrible in my opinion, and would completely ruin the game.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
No, but it can add something to a game, like the gore in l4d2 is what really made it worth a new game and not just an expansion from l4d.... plus the game just worked better. There is one type of game that kind of needs gore or at least needs good enemy deaths, games like the diablo series, they are built on satisfying kills.

I'm a Jemima Puddle Duck answer.
So here's my real answer: Gore matters in some games and not in others.

For example, imagine if you had asked this questions: "Does gore make a film good?"
Gore would probably hamper a romantic comedy.
Gore might or might not enhance a war movie.
Gore is necessary for a splatter horror film.

It depends.

I like the gore in Fallout 3 and New Vegas but bodies come apart a bit easy at times.

Like when I'm playing a sneaky assassin style character and I shot the target in the head with a silenced 10 mm pistol and the whole head falls off and rolls across the room.

Though I found that being able to shot a persons leg off at the knee with the anti material rifle really enhanced the experience.

Generally speaking, a game is good regardless of gore.

However, depending on the game, gore can add to or take away from the experience.

Does a vase make a movie good?

Does the word "the" make a song good?

Does a serif font make a book good?

Lol, sorry I offended you by trying to be funny bro.
Maybe next time you could consider not replying to my polls.
It'd save you becoming distressed at the fact that some people like adding a bit of comedy to their posts and it would save me thinking that your big meany :).

My question was "does gore make a game good" not "how do I think logically about something I find illogical". ninja gaiden was an example in order to give my question some impact
I appreciate your opinion, just try not to be so condescending next time :).

Would gore make the next Hello Kitty game better?

...yeah ok, I'll use a different example. Would gore make the next Hitman game good? Objectivly it would work within the game; you're shooting people and sniper rounds do cause a hell of a mess. Personally, I guess it would make it a little better. However, it's not part of the core mechanics: Hitman is about surgically taking out your target, if there's buckets of blood left in every room you visit (something that would be very feasible within the mechanics and does often happen when I play Blood Money when bored) then you could probably have played the level better.

Yes, what Hitman needs and what it's based on isn't blood and spectacular gore, it's stealth. Ninja Gaiden is based around (or at least uses as a core concept) those spectacular visuals and excessive gore, it's a fun game of kicking ass and removing limbs.

Take out the Stealth mechanic of a Hitman game and it's not a Hitman game, no matter what title you slap on the front of the box. If you take out the dismemberment and gore out of Ninja Gaiden, is it still a Ninja Gaiden game?

Gore of course does not make a game better, but I found the lack of gore in Ninja Gaiden (in a couple of the cutscenes, for example Ryu's first appearance) 2 on the PS3 was.... Weird. It was pretty obvious that the gore was supposed to be there (especially since I'd played the Xbox version beforehand) and the lack of it was awkward, like bad lip syncing.
However, Shadow Of Rome is an amazing game partly due to the ability to beat a man to death with their own arm.
I'm not sure how I feel about that.

It adds to the atmosphere, if you shoot a guy in the face...point blank range with a shotgun then I want to see his head become a mangled mess. I do not want to see him fall over head in tact

Gore only works in certain games, imagine God of War without copious amounts of blood. Not as entertaining, but having gore in a game like Super Mario is plain stupid. There is a time and a place for gore
