Gears of War is really, really weird with the content filter on. It isn't a worse game for it, but it doesn't feel right.

In 999, some characters die by having a bomb explode in their stomachs. The game doesn't show you any actual bodies (or rather, what's left of it) aside from some blood-splattered walls, but the monologue goes into all kinds of gruesome details. I thought the game was worse for it.

The people who go to Ninja Gaiden for the absurd violence and difficulty won't get their desired product with 3 so then why would they buy it.

Gore is an aesthetic choice, and like any other aesthetic choice, it needs to be made with tact. For instance, the plentiful bloodshed in Mortal Kombat, which has always been intended as equal parts homage and parody to chop-socky kung fu flicks of old, adds to the humor that's always been present in the game, whereas the gore in a game like God of War adds to the visceral nature of not only the era from whence it comes, but also Kratos as a character, who's meant to be portrayed as unapologetically brutal. There are a few games, of course, where the gore doesn't quite fit the remainder of the aesthetic. Bayonetta comes to mind, but then again, there were a hell of a lot of things about that game that just didn't work.

Have to agree with all this. At the very least make it Really Good Bacon, although I guess when you're 14 "randomness" is some kind of cosmic power that makes everything funny.

OT: No, gore itself doesn't make a game good.

Definitely depends on the game, but in general, no.

Imagine Pokemon with gore. That would be awful.

And yes, I realize that a lot of people probably would enjoy that. But it would be terrible in my opinion, and would completely ruin the game.

No, but it can add something to a game, like the gore in l4d2 is what really made it worth a new game and not just an expansion from l4d.... plus the game just worked better. There is one type of game that kind of needs gore or at least needs good enemy deaths, games like the diablo series, they are built on satisfying kills.

So here's my real answer: Gore matters in some games and not in others.

For example, imagine if you had asked this questions: "Does gore make a film good?"
Gore would probably hamper a romantic comedy.
Gore might or might not enhance a war movie.
Gore is necessary for a splatter horror film.

I like the gore in Fallout 3 and New Vegas but bodies come apart a bit easy at times.

Like when I'm playing a sneaky assassin style character and I shot the target in the head with a silenced 10 mm pistol and the whole head falls off and rolls across the room.


Though I found that being able to shot a persons leg off at the knee with the anti material rifle really enhanced the experience.

My question was "does gore make a game good" not "how do I think logically about something I find illogical". ninja gaiden was an example in order to give my question some impact
