So several gaming sites, and sources have reviewed Killzone 2, and good news it's set to be game of the year so far. While i'm an xboxer, I'm happy for my ps3 brotheren, and I was gonna buy a ps3 anyhoo. But heres my question are you okay with reviews that are coming 3 weeks before the game ships to store shelfs? It seems like a cheap hype device. I know magazines review early, but there have been alot of reviews from the internet, and g4, is this a cheap ploy or what?

p.s. xbox and pc elitists shut the hell up now about your console/pc still being superior, no one's asking you.

The incredibly early reviews are indeed very suspicious... I really don't trust such high scores on first-person shooters anymore...

I don't believe in reviews anymore after I blew $60 on Metroid Prime 3 and loathed it.

Yes, I complain about MP3 a lot, but it was honestly one of the worst games I've ever played.
Whoa, you actually spent $10 more than what it actually cost?

The magazines have to release them early since due to their nature, they have a limmited printing cycle, so the review has to be out when the game releases. The Internet sites have to release at a similar time to compete. Simple as that.
but not for everything and there is the rub.

Seriously if you spend $60 bucks on a game based on the reviews, hate the game and then get mad at the reviewers you deserve to be punched in the groin. Same goes for movies, music, books. They are art forms. Different art appeals to different people.

Depends on what you were expecting out of it. Did you play the first two? If you didn't, and approached MP3 as "omfg fps on wii!!!1!eleven1!!!" then you would have been sorely mistaken.

That being said, I do agree with your point on reviews somewhat...while I highly enjoyed all the Metroid Prime games, I was disappointed with Resident Evil 4, while it got some of the best reviews ever for Gamecube and in the low 9's for PS2.

Well the early critical consensus goes as...

Mind blowing graphics
Tactical singleplayer, that plays great
But despite the first person cover system, it feels like we've been here before
And there should be more colors
It has a forgettable story
With horrible voice acting

Class based multiplayer, that plays great
With great match types
Ranking up and classes are great fun and provide for countless play styles

But seriously, where's the co-op?
And damn, this game looks good!

Final Score: 9.5/10

I haven't played the game yet; this just seems to be what is the consenus coming out of the reviews, and I don't see that changing when the game actually comes out, unless multiplayer ends up being really buggy like Gears 2.

Again this is not my opinion, it is the opinion of the gaming press, as a unit.

Even if the reviews were positive, they should still hold back a little longer than this.

There is a damn good chance all the reviewers are being paid off...
Even Tycho?
Yes,
Even Tycho, you will be surprised what happens to review scores once money is shown.
So what you're saying is that the last line of integrity amongst gamers, the most eloquent and noble among our ranks, is a corporate whore?
He's a 360 fanboy that will believe anything as long as it isn't "(name of PS3 game here) is an awesome title that everyone should play." or even "(name of PS3 game here) is an ok game that people should at least try if they like this genre." Only fanboys make that "Oh, well, every reviewer on the planet was payed off." Yet, they only do that for games on the other consoles. A Microsoft fanboy will NEVER accuse Microsoft of paying off reviewers, just Sony.

Reviews this early contains about 80% hype and marketing money, so take the reviews with a whole heap of salt this early on.

Wait until the hype has settled and people start looking at the actual game and not the promises it made.

I for one don't believe in early rave reviews like Killzone 2 is getting, because most of the time they are just hype reviews and stuff.I'd rather wait for community reviews from Gamespot or other sites than official ones.

I work on the assumption that anyone reviewing a game more than a week before release date has put it in writing they will give the game a positive review. If they didn't the publisher wouldn't give them a copy.

Until the game is out and the general public are playing it all reviews should be taken with half a can of salt.

They do this with all big money games and we all know how corrupt game journalism is.

Killzone 2 isn't special in this regard.

Right I'm off to play my DoW II demo thats cleverly disguised as an open beta.

I'm 90% sure that publishers only allow positive reviews to be released early, otherwise they're told to hold back. Instead of holding back and potentially losing traffic/sales, the reviews glow more than they should.

That said, something seemed a little more honest about IGN's reviews for Killzone 2.

One of the most believeable reviews I've seen so far has actually come from the Official Xbox Blog. Seeing them review Killzone 2 and give it a positive review surprised me, though I generally do take early reviews with a healthy amout of skeptecism

Well the press usually gets games early so yes, what's not fair is reviews from the public.
I mean JESUS! This game has yet to release and the public is already reviewing it.
I'm trying my best not to be fanboyie since I have both systems (each to their own), but this shit is getting on my nerves.

In general, the "average" score for a game...meaning, the score a game which is "average" (Think a C if you were in school) is actually about an 8/10

The score table in gaming mags go as this:
1-4: Horrible horrible game, don't play, ever.
5-7: Pretty good, fun, a TRUE average game, but no money was shown.
8-9: Average to Above Average + we got a cash bonus, hence the extra point
9.5: This title is going to sell a lot, its probably shallow and you'll be done playing it in a week or so, but its pretty well made.
10: Same as 9.5, but Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft made it and paid us a LOT of cash to give it a 10.

It never fails really...like when every reviewer bashed basically 90% of Spore, yet then named 1 tiny good factor about the game (creature creator), and then gave it a 9-10.

I'll only watch video reviews so I can see the game in action at least, then rent, and make up my own mind.

Only thing gaming mags are good for is telling us what titles are on the way.

Reading a bit too much Game Informer?
I don't believe in that Rating table because: A) It illogical. B)Its what GI uses.
Really its hard to find honest reviews for games now a days if you want to see how good a game is, rent it. Don't believe most reviewers, believe in yourself. *cue Disney song*
