Diablo 3 isn't out yet. Hoping it makes release this year for Christmas, but knowing Blizzard, doubtful. Might pick up Sacred 2 till then.Rodger said:
Oblivion, continuing a good concept, but poorly. Isn't terribly fascinating to begin with, and just gets more and more boring as you continue through the game. IMO of course. Morrowind and even Fallout 3 are much better story-wise.
Neverwinter Nights 2, a.k.a. the worst of all Baldur's Gate clones. My advice, try more of them. Planescape: Torment, Temple of Elemental Evil, Baldur's Gate 2, Icewind Dale, hell, even Neverwinter Nights single player is pretty good. Course the main appeal of NWN is it's multi-player roleplaying system. And I am by no means a fan of BG and it's clones, except Torment of course.

Elder Scrolls are one of my favorite game series ever, and Final Fantasy is one of my least favorite. I've had little experience of rpgs outside of the two, except for pokemon (which I dislike after 2nd gen). So Westerns win!
You are correct sir/ma'am (whatever) Western RPGs have started to take dominion of the RPG scene as a whole for the last few years now. Even Hideo Kojima has said himself that the demand for eastern made products (video games) is slowly declining. As close to a proper quote as I can get, he basically said it just plain sucks to be an asian right now... probably meaning asian developer, and jokingly.
I find something inherently irritating about the visual style of JRPG's. Something about those goggle eyed freaks and pretty boys just pisses me off. The voice acting grates on me as well, and the drama, oh the drama! Maybe they are actually really fun to play, but I just can't get over the fact that I actively hate everything I see and hear in the game.
As much as Western RPG's are often generic medieval fantasy world X, I don't want the main characters to die slowly and painfully while I watch, gloating over their hideous demise.
EDIT: Except Secret of Mana, but that was a bit too primitive to have developed the irritating visuals and voice acting, and it had an action element.

Zelda is not an RPG, it is an action/adventure game.
I have to go with Western, simply because JRPGs still haven't been able to move past turn-based combat. I like Pokémon, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, and Final Fantasy 2, and that's about it in JRPGs for me. The thing with those games is, while they had turn-based combat:
1. they were awhile ago (I only played Pokémon up to Leaf Green)
2. they always had a good way to make up for it
---Pokémon: so many different moves and Pokémon, so no two files ever felt the same.
---Chrono Trigger: there was a pressure of time put on your attacks, as your opponent never stopped charging their next move. Also, no random battles!
---Earthound: The ability to instant kill weaker enemies without actually entering the battle was one of the most brilliant ideas I had ever seen. It was also hilarious, but that's a different converation.
---Final Fantasy 2: You never had to grind, because you didn't have a set level, you just gained experience with whatever you used most.

Anyway, I don't see why the game being made in Japan or the west would make it good or bad. People shouldn't just say "Games from Japan are bad", or vice versa.
Play the game, not the genre.
I prefer western RPG's personally. Sometimes it's a matter of characterization and story tropes. Most of the time it's just a question of game mechanics. In both cases, the general trend indicates that western RPG's favor my tastes more readily than JRPG's.
Western, eastern, they all make bad, good, and middle-ground rpgs. Do I have to choose a part of the same genre but made on different parts of the world? Or can I enjoy both at the same time? They're all rpgs. There is no 'better' one, as some from either end of the planet are going to be drastically different than others. I like any game that I enjoy playing, and that's about it. It doesn't matter where on the world it was made. All rpgs have the same general blue prints when you get right down to it.
Also, Zelda is not an rpg, it is an action game. Dungeon Siege is a hack&slash. If a thread is going to be put up disputing two different parts of the same genre, at least stick to the genre in question.

Both sides of the coin have their good games, their mediocre games, and their complete crap. Anyone who says otherwise probably has no idea what they're talking about.

I voted for JRPG's, not because I think they're better, but because I hate the WRPG "Fans" on this site. More often than not they are jerks who don't know jack shit about that which they claim to hate, make broad, baseless statements and brown nose Yahtzee like their lives depended on it.

I agree. It may just be because there are more WRPG fans on the site, but it seems to me that WRPG fans insult JRPG's more than the JRPG fans insult WRPG's. For someone who prefers JRPG's to WRPG's (but not by much, I love both), it can be a little tough to take.PedroSteckecilo said:

I haven't played many rpgs (just ff 7 and kotor 1/2). But I'd have to go so far with the west. I like the freedom and choice. yes I admit ff 7 has a really really good story but for games that take place over a massive world and/ or timeframe I like my freedom.
