If there's 3 difficulties I tend to play on the hardest, if there's any more then I tend to play on one below the hardest unless it's like Postal 2 where there's about 20 difficulties of which the top and bottom 5 are really just to take the piss.

I like to imagine that the middle ground is how a game is meant to be played in the developer's eyes. Easy reduces the difficulty and hard ups it. So I generally start with medium and work my way up.

Medium first, then switch to hard if I find it too easy or if I'm doing a second playthrough...

If it's available, I'm ashamed to say that I will put a game on Easy mode. I just like to have fun and enjoy the game, story, characters, etc. There have been some games I've played that I was totally into, only to be pwned by a boss and never able to move on (Final Fantasy, I'm looking at you!) and that always sucks, so I'd rather not worry about that.

Imo I have plenty of challenges and tests of endurance in real life so I tend to go with easy/medium. Easy because I like to enjoy the game and experience the atmosphere, story, and scenery. Medium is still my default though because I feel like a dweeb if I always pick easy.

medium or hard

Depends on the game. Different studios have different ideas about challenge.

I usually start at the middle difficulty, but on any 2nd+ playthroughs, I usually go on the hardest difficulty..

Used to be medium but im finding games too easy now and have started setting them to the hardest setting.

And if the game proves to be difficult then at least it's lengthening my playtime.

I start on medium/normal because it provides a little challenge without being frustrating. If I like the game enough I'll play through again on a harder difficulty.

Depends on the game. If it's just a shooter with no plot to speak of, then hard mode it is.
If I want to know whats going on, then I generally don't want to be loading saves every 3 feet and choose medium or easy mode depending on the game.

I usually play normal, because if the developers named a difficulty normal its obviously the difficulty the devs designed the game around.

They sure as hell didn't design the game on hard difficulty or insane difficulty or OMGITSEATINGMYFACE difficulty.

So... yeah, I like to be normal.

Depends on the game
Largely medium though - For RPG's I like to follow the story whilst not feel like character upgrading/progression is only to intensify immortality, RTS games I like to gradually increase the difficulty and FPS is more of a medium to hard - wanting a challenge without endlessly replaying the same uncharacteristically evil bit over and over again only to find out I die in the next cut scene anyway!

Depends on how hard the game itself is. Most russian ones are murderously difficult even on easy and some american games allow me to finish them in a single day on the hardest setting *coughwolfensteincough*.

Medium, always medium. Nothing more, nothing less.

UNLESS THERE's ACHIEVMENTS INVOLVED!!

depends on what type of game. If it's a genre that I'm great at I'll usually go with normal or the intermediate-hard option if it's there. If it's something I think I'll be bad at, then easy.

Since I mostly play RPGs, I play through easy to test/learn their system. I then move to medium to find the best path for me. Then it is on to hard where I see how good I am.
