Medium then Insane.

I enjoy just going through the story with no frustration or irritability to take in the game then going for the prize while it won't ruin my opinion of the game through being destructively difficult.

I always play through the game on easy up to insane. Im not a completionist in the sense that i want to unlock all the unlockables. I just like knowing that everything the game had to throw at me i obliterated with my thumbs.

I choose easy or normal, depending on the amount of time I have to spare (easy = shorter).

But on the second playthrough, I'll bump it up to the hardest difficulty.

I start on easy and once I finish it I move up until I complete it on all difficulties. I don't know why, I just feel like it's the right way to do it by starting from the beginning.

you have to play easy first to "rate" the game and know just how easy "easy" is, if you like the game and want a challenge (i usually do) then you play the hard version

Usually easy.
If I find a game too hard, I lose interest very quickly.
Besides, I don't think God of War 3 would've been half as fun had some of the enemies actually fought back.

First of all, what's with the rhubarb pie option? Not gonna contribute to the debate. Secondly, Medium. I always get the feeling that medium is the default setting, the setting like the game really is, and the other ones are variations on it.

Medium/normal first playthrough to learn to ropes and not be spoon fed and then I tend to step it up to hard for second playthrough

Or if I'm playing through to get something I missed first time I'll put it to easy

If there's only 3 (Easy/Medium/Hard) I'll go Hard every time. If there's more (Easy/Medium/Hard/Insane) it depends on the type of game. If it's something I feel confident in it'll be the hardest possible difficulity, if not then usually the one below.

I enjoy a challange and I hate being able to breeze through a game. If the game allows you to change the difficulty in game them I will always start at the highest and work my way down.

This thread has already been done and has only just left the first page [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.200634-Poll-Difficulties-in-gaming-Which-one-suits-you]. but since this one seems to be so well presented, I'll bite.

I tend to start on normal, then see how it goes. If I can't change the difficulty without starting again, then I try and get a feel for the game as soon as possible. Being on the right difficulty is very important to my enjoyment.

Normal for most games, but for a game that is just so piss-easy in Normal mode (Alan Wake) then I jump into hard to bring in some challenge. Then, if I like the game enough, I'll play on the hardest difficulty, in which case, Nightmare difficulty in Alan Wake is fucking insane.

I choose the medium/normal difficulty, to get myself use to the game and have fun. I might play through the game again on a harder difficulty, if I can be bothered.

I always play on the Hardest difficulty available (kind of hate games that make you play through it once to actually use it). Not to be seen as a "hardcore" gamer though. I have my own belief behind it, which is...

The Hardest difficulty to me is the full on experience of what the game has to offer (in my opinion). Modern Warfare, RE5, Bioshock, even so much to say Curse of Monkey Island.

The belief behind it for me is to NOT play any other difficulty. A challenge comes in two flavors... ones you yourself make up, and ones the game actually gives you.

The former happens when you do play easier difficulties first. Anytime you go, "Man, this IS much harder" or something to that extent is a challenge you made up for yourself. Gratification coming from setting a personal goal to which you eventually overcome. ("I beat this before, I can do it again")

The latter on the other hand being a challenge that the game gives you... Say... Holding a position for a few minutes, or getting through an area undetected. Obvious gratification coming from getting further in the game. ("I did it!")

Now to finally get to the point of it all...

It's all about the Comparisons. If you start a game on the Hardest Difficulty then you have no Basis on what easier difficulties are like to go, "Wow, this IS harder". You just go along the game as if every hard part was part of the designers plan the whole time.

This is a prime example of a "Double Edged Sword" kind of ideology because if a game isn't made right in general, then playing on the Hardest Difficulty can just piss you off. Alpha Protocol comes to mind. Playing as a pure Stealth/Sabotage character, I had MAJOR difficulty with the Bosses... Forcing me into a firefight when I have been sneaking the whole game just seemed unfair considering I had no skills with guns.

But... After exploiting AI behaviors, and using cheap tactics even that game has been bested. So I guess I can attribute that game to actually making me Think... which is a weird thought.

mmm, rhubarb is awesome sauce.

Anyway, I like a slight challenge. I want to die a few times.

But if it gets ridiculous I will just go to a game I enjoyed earlier or get a new one and let the other gather dust.
