I am not very far in the game...I'd like to join Stormcloak...but when I see groups randomly I kill both factions. Did i mess something up? Can I not join either now.
You may have. Go to Windhelm if you want to join the Stormcloaks (not sure how you join the Empire). Speak to Ulfric or the other guy with the helmet made of an animal.

If there's no option to ask to join, you may have screwed up, though I doubt Bethesda designed the game like that.
Go to Solitude to join the Empire. Felt like the only true choice for a High Elf ^^
As a Nord, I spit in your general direction.

Till now I tried to avoid joining any side. At the beginning both sides had their points and my alignment changed several times with the new things I learned about the fractions. Right now, the empire has my empathy, not because of what they do, but of a thing I read about Ulric.

During one of the missions for the Blades, I found a file about him, that states that he's a sleeper agent for the elves(although uncooperative). Which pretty much questions his whole rebellion.

Stormcloak, if only because the Empire tried to murder me in the intro.
Though Ulfric's voice really gets on my nerves...
His "hey, why are you here? gtfo *****" makes me want to incinerate his smug face off.
I joined Stormcloak for the above reason. Besides that, the Imperials seem like douchebags to me. When I make my next toon (and go the assassin route) I will take the Imperial route for shits and giggles.
I don't think the other games should affect my judgement (especially since it was it was Uriel that saved me from the jail cell, not the greater empire) but if they did, I'd still choose Stormcloaks out of the respect I had for the empire that was.

I've actually charged ahead in the campaign without taking sides thus far. I'd like to resole it as the Dovahkiin and not as someone else's grunt.

For this game and story? Stormcloaks.. you start the game with the Empire trying to lob your head off, why would I ever give them any love after that.

First playthrough, as a Nord spellsword, Empire. As you can see from a book in the main quest

the Thalmor want the civil war to drag on, and actually allowed Ulfric to escape after he gave up information on Imperial defences (though they didn't need it). While the book says a Stormcloak victory should be avoided, I can't help but think the Dominion would rather see the Empire fragment further, leaving the new kingdoms ripe for the taking for the (apparantly) already powerful Dominion and their armies. For the same reason, my Altmer mage will join the rebellion eventually. Well, that and Ulfric as High King would probably lead to another civil war sooner or later.

Also, Ulfric is kinda horrible.

I went with the Empire, why? Because I love Whiterun and I did not want to attack it. That's the one and only reason I went with the Empire.

I had a very hard time choosing, this is one of the in-game decisions that I will remember for a long time.

I chose Empire, for a few different reasons.

First, the Empire NEEDS Skyrim, and Skyrim NEEDS the Empire. Without the manpower and skill of the Nord troops, the Empire will not win the second war versus the Thalmor. But if Skyrim gains independance, they can't stand alone against the might of the Altmeri Dominion.

Secondly, if Humanity is to survive the Thalmor's future attacks, (and believe me, they are coming) they will need to be united. The old cliche, divide and conquer.

Thirdly, I firmly believe that the Thalmor are right about the divinity of Tiber Septim. (No matter how much I hate those prejudiced bastards) Tiber was a great man, and a good emperor, but that does not make him a god.

I've been soundly proven wrong on that point, however, I would like to say the the Empire is just buying time with the White - Gold Concordat, when the next war happens, and if the Empire wins, then of course worship of Talos will be reinstated. I guess till then, stick it out? :p

While the Empire might seem to be a puppet of the Thalmor, you know, the whole concordat and all, make no mistake, shit's going to go down, and soon. The Empire will need every sword at it's disposal. It can't afford to be surrounded by hostile forces on yet another side.

No matter how just the Stormcloaks cause may seem, their demands must be rejected, for the greater good.

I just found that bit of dirt on him (I'm doing the dragon main quest first and then the war one). I also walked in on him and his General talking. He is utterly racist and nationalistic. He has connections with the same people he decries the Empire for working with, and he wants to be king to be king, not for any real noble reason. All signs point to him being a sleazy politician who only cares about himself. I trust General Tullius far more and at least the Empire promotes multiculturalism.

The Stormcloaks are Nazis in training.
If they got power they would go after any non-Nords, and several of my friends and companions aren't Nords.
I can't support that, so Empire. (Though I am currently unsided.)

I sided with the Empire. I know the Stormcloaks only want freedom for there countrymen but the way they treat elves(understandable) is not justifiable. Also they seemed to have the philosophy of the ends justify the means, I cannot support this. The Empire is not perfect, banning worship for a popular god and the eradication of the Blades are examples of this. In the end Skyrim does need a rebellion however the Stormcloaks are NOT it.

If i am going to join any group it is going to be Stormcloaks.
And why is because in real life i am from a cold country taht was
occupied by other kingdoms and thus i am one of the Nords of Skyrim.
Opressed and being treated as a slave really.

Also, them wanting to kill me in the start did not help their cause.

Not picking on anyone in particular, but the logic that the empire tried to kill you for confusing you for a stormcloak, therefore you'll join the stormcloaks.. That's pretty fuzzy.
"They arrested me for a crime I didn't commit! Now I'm going to commit that crime so that next time they'll at least be right"

Oh, aye, I gathered my Amulet of Talos and journeyed forth to Ulfric's castle, only to learn along the way he were naught but a lowly murderer and a liar of most unabashed magnitude.
When I overheard him and his cronies plot a betrayal of the good Nords of Whiterun, where I had recently been raised to an honorable Thane, I muttered my excuses and turned back whence I came. As I made my way to my adopted home, I learned more of the oppressive Thalmor and how those damned elves had set the land to ruin, and decided I would join the Legion, keeping my ancestral homeland safe from a wave of vengeance I thought would surely follow should Skyrim declare itself apart from the empire. The Altmer are a cruel race who would never stand to see a free land of true Nords. So I made my way to Solitude.
Once there, I met met the general in command of the Legion in Skyrim. A soft, aged Imperial full of the ignorance typical of his ilk. His kind were the reason I made my return to the land of my ancestors. I could not serve under this man's command, lest his condescension pry loose from me a violent rage. I left, disgusted and disheartened. As I traveled the wearying road home, I came across one of them. Those damned Altmer, those accursed Thalmor oppressors. I looked on, and beheld that there were two others with him, standing smug in their gaudy robes. I saw a young breton, a lad only just entered into manhood, bloodied and bound, dragged behind them. I asked what the man had done to deserve such brutality. With a sneer only an elf could muster, the leader, the one whom I had first seen, replied that the breton had knowledge of a Talos cult, and word be tortured until he divulged it. And that, information or none, the lad would not survive his mutilations.
I quaked with rage. My knuckles went white as I gripped the hilt of my blade. Fire born of wrath smoldered in my clenched fist. I let forth a mighty Shout and the two underlings were knocked away, then I plunged my dagger into the leader's neck. "Woe unto the deniers of Talos, and to the oppressors of Skyrim!"
As I looked over the scene of the slaughter, I beheld that, though the cursed elves were no more, the Breton had too left this world behind. Weakened as he had been, my careless Shout had crushed the last of his life from his chest. Disquieted, I returned home, leaving the bodies for the wolves.
My mission was clear.
I could not save Skyrim from the Empire.
I could not save the Empire from the Aldmeri Dominion who held its leash so chokingly.
I could not do any of these things.
But I could kill as many Thalmor as I could find.

Who is far enough in the game to actually tell who is "on the side of right"?

Its not really all about religious freedom, does Ulfric just wanna run Skyrim, or are the Eleves fucking up the rest of the Empire, I really should have paid more attention.

Yes. Yes you should have. recognition of Talos has been banned throughout the empire. They also are ruling the Empire perched on the backs of their own people

But Oblivion does. Martin needed the power of the Nine to complete his gate to Paradise. And he used a relic of Talos.
Not to mention the blessings Talos grants his worshippers in the games.

Went straight to the stormcloaks. Talos is a legitimate and important God so screw the Thalmor(which basically own the empire atm). Also if the Empire rolls over for the Thalmor now they will lose if there is a rebellion against the thalmor as they have no spys and the thalmor basically owns them. No. If Tamriel is lost then you might as well go out with dignity with the Stormcloaks.
