I only played a trial for EVE and I found the game pretty lame (in the 2 hours before uninstalling it). From what I've heard as well your better off just logging on to start training a skill then coming back two weeks later to train another skill. Yet in EVE commercials (like the one accompaning the latest Zero Punctuation) they show it as an amazing sci-fi war game that makes Freelancer look boring. Which is it? A slow paced, buisness simulator where you can only move to selected targets to go to instead of actually exploring blindly. Or is it an intence shooter where thousands of ships come together with the sole goal of blowing everything up?

Both.

Once you get to a certain point in the game, the isk quite literally makes itself (assuming you invest it in some IPOs), and as you don't need to be worrying about skill grinding, it leaves you to do the multi-hundred-ship battles.

Granted its not as quick as other MMOs and indeed there are very slow moments. I feel its worth playing myself, once you get over that hump.

I can understand why people don't like it though.

I've been through two trials of EVE and I can say that I haven't witnessed, let alone took part in, any kind of gigantic space battle like the ones that take place in their trailers. It's possible I was just looking in the wrong places, but I was never in the middle of any kind of battle with any more than two other people with me if any at all.

It's really damn slow compared to almost any genre of games but has a big galaxy, so yeah, I'd say all flash no substance.

There inlies the problem with EVE.

To get the big battles you need to be in 0.0 (otherwise known as nullsec) which is an area most people don't get into until at least 6 months into the game.

The trailers don't show this at all.

You need to get involved with a corporation. Join a corp in one of the big alliances and you'll be in 0.0 fighting battles with 100s of other players. Just look on youtube, there's some good fleet battles on there.

Yep. Big battles don't just happen. Big battles come from big forces, big forces come from alliances. Basically, EvE's substance does not appear at all until you involve yourself in something bigger than yourself, usually corps/alliances, but perhaps the market, or any in game niche you want to burrow into.

And Theo, IPOs? You've lost me? If that is really stupid, blame me being drunk.

Agreed. No person with a trial account is in any position to venture into lawless space, especially if they do so on their own. You would have had to be in the game world for roughly six months like you said. That would be long enough to make a respectable amount of money, train up a lot of skills, and build a nice assortment of ships.

Most of the big fleet action takes place between the Corporate Alliances fighting over territory in nullsec, which is very far away from Faction Space where new players start.

To be fair. Complaining that the giant uber awsome space battles in the EVE trailer dont happen is like complainint that in the Wrath of the Lych King you dont actually fight a giant legion of whatever they are in a frozen wasteland. Its a trailer. Few CGI trailer's are ever remotely close to what the actual game plays like.

Its a decent game (which due to a bug I cant play for more than 5mins without getting a socket closed error n it crashing >:-() but its not Freelancer, nor trying to be (having played freelancer multiplayer I dont really see that as a bad thing either tbh :-D). Jumpgate evolution if it ever comes out might be more up ur alley in MMO terms.

edit: The game can actually look like that, but only after alot of editing & frapsing from multiple angles in premium graphics setting. The vid itself is meant to be part of the ongoing story arc connected to Factional Warfare as well as a trailer for the game.

As for substance the game can be as deep as you want it to be. If all you want to do is grind missions all day, you can do that (it sucks). If you wanna get involved in shooting other people, you can do that too (best way is to join one of the FW militias, though ull need to do a bit of mission grinding before then but shouldnt take too long afaik). The player politics is fascinating if your into that sorta stuff. There is enough time in the trial, specially if you get one of the extended trial promo things, to get a taste of what theres to do in EVE. There are problems for sure. But its a heck of alot easier being a new player now than it was when I joined in 2005.

I personally love it, but don't expect to start and within 2 hours be participating in massive battles with lots of cool looking ships and hookers.

This happens after you have played the game for awhile, know what you are doing, have decent ships/skills, and join a corporation.

Frankly I can't imagine a game with more substance than eve.

Playing EVE for 2 hours your first time is like... unbuttoning just the top button on your girlfriend's shirt then leaving her for the TV.

The substance of the game takes weeks to unfold. If you want a quick hit, it's not going to be your thing. After 2.5 years in it, I still have fun on a regular basis with it.

Some players like fighting, and if you want to fight, you'd be better off talking to them about the game. I can only really talk about the mining and manufacturing side of the game (though I am Level 4 combat mission capable). If you're interested in the business side of it, check these. They chronicle my corp's investigation and subsequent purchase of a very expensive blueprint for manufacturing mining ships.

Too many people in this thread haven't got a f**king clue what they are talking about.

Massive fleet fights happen all the damn time, don't blame the game because you didn't go further than the starter system.

I don't know what's your girlfriend like (...most likely you lack one judging by that post) but unbuttoning the top button of my girlfriend's shirt gets me pretty excited and interested in what comes next, not to mention it's a rather enjoyable experience by itself. Which is the exact polar opposite of EVE.

EVE doesn't get me excited. The only things in EVE that look good are the concept art and the trailers. And the trailers ALWAYS look good, specially when they're entirely made of pre-rendered cinematics. The actual game has as much to do with it's trailers as I have with Neil Armstrong... I suppose we're both human beings, much like eve and it's trailers are both in the same general settings... But past that they have nothing in common.

The cool space battles only happen 5% of the time, if you join a good alliance (or get involved in factional warfare). However, when it does happen, it's worth it.

The game does require a ton of patience to get into. If you want a quick fix, don't bother. World of Warcraft is a better choice for that.
