lmao! you dont flip random people off, its very anti-social....the first quest is either arming or disarming the nuke in megaton
The first quest is the whole 'finding your dad' bit. Everything else is a side-quest.

OP, in the first quest you'll need to go to Mortiary's Saloon and either buy, quest for, or steal the information on your dad that you need. The story quests are boring though. As soon as I get out of the Vault, I like to hit Megaton, go to Mortiary's, do the Megaton Nuke quest(if your explosives skill is high enough, of course), and then you get a free house when you talk to the Sheriff's son if you don't blow up the bomb, and a free house at Tenpenny tower if you do blow up the bomb.

But DO NOT do that if you don't know how to play well, because if you do, you'll have Talon Mercs attacking you all the time. At least, you will if you disarm the bomb.

After that, I just like to wander the map, picking up odd quests here and there, and just generally paving my own path through the wastes.

The joy in Fallout 3 is in the characters and the places.

So go out, wander into the wasteland, and find some characters.

If you want a pretty powerful gun, go to the very top right corner of the map (It's quite a trek), and find the Republic of Dave. I won't tell you much about the Republic of Dave, other then it has a guy named Dave in it.

To get the weapon you have to elect someone OTHER then Dave (or kill Dave). This gives you access to Dave's Safe, and a suped up Hunting Rifle called Ol' Painless
I actually liked the challenge of getting Vengeance in The deathclaw sanctuary. but Ol' Painless is pretty good too, since its ammo type (.32 bullets i believe) are abundant.
If you can get to the deathclaw sanctuary and leave to tell it at a low level, then yeah, that'd be fine. You still wouldn't be able to beat the deathclaws, but it would lock their level at its lowest. Still too tough to kill at level 1 without insane 1 hit kill weapons.

<color=purple> Well, I never really liked Fallout 3, but I never gave it a fair chance. Maybe you should give it another chance unlike me. I feel like I have missed out. Worst case scenario: You waste a little more time than needed to realize that the game is just not for you.

The point of Fallout is that has huge emphasis on the "Role-playing" part. You basically act how you would in real life and the game treats you like people would treat you in real life. Don't go around shooting people in the face and flipping random people off and the game will treat you much better overall

from your description i don't think open world western rpg's are for you. But if you want to persevere follow some of these handy tips (that aren't very good.)

1. Don't shoot people that aren't hostile to you at least not immediately, if someone isn't trying to kill that usually means they have some form of use.

2. talk to people. They give you quests which will give you a little bit of direction.

3. use your map! if you get lost in a subway use the local map.

4. take it one step at a time at your own pace. spend some time in megaton and use tip #2. then gradually move away at your own pace.

5. The Vault is Fallout's wiki use it for walkthroughs and help if your still stuck.

thats really it. Also you complained about being lost and having little direction. maybe fallout 3 isn't that fun for you. Perhaps you should try oblivion or morrowind.they seem to have a little more sense of direction.

Also almost all rpgs are fairly text heavy. Just saying.

I went in there at level five (with a shitload of stiimpaks) and came out alive (with a shitload of stimpaks)

It's impressive, I'll admit :)

Ive played it more than fifty times. I know how to kill a few deathclaws with a 10mm pistol and a 10mm submachingun.

It seems as if you're doing something wrong - it's important that you really take the time to talk to all the other characters you meet, and learn about the town you're in or what's going on, etc. I believe that there are something like 4 or 5 quests in Megaton alone - oh, and don't shoot anyone in Megaton, unless you're planning on blowing it up, however.

Keep shooting the deathclaw with those guns until it dies?

nope. run around like a school girl while shooting it, then shoot yourself up with some drugs. XP

That sounds a lot like the strategy I used to beat Bioshock on "Survivor" while using the wrench pretty much the whole time - hit someone, and then spin around them in a circle while continuously hitting them. Ahh, good times =)

Seems like all you would need to do is spend for tme trying to find your way out of the subway station. Keep in mind that the exit may be on a level above or below you.

You're on the run with no ammo, no money, nobody to buy stuff from and you got an angry mob after you?

That sounds insanely fun to me. My suggestion is to keep the character, explore the world and see what you find. Every area has something of note in the game. Half the fun in the game is wandering around aimlessly, seeing something that catches your eye, then approaching or killing said something and getting loot and information from said something. Example, while I'm going to a small abandoned town for Moira, I see a blown out church building with several Super Mutants in it. After taking two minutes to dispatch the mutants, I walk inside to find a beevy of ammo and hidden quite well inside a podium, a message from a family that talks of a vault underneath the National Guard building, how each family member has only 1 number to the vault's combination and they must reconcile their differences to survive.

After several hours of researching and locating the rest of the messages, you manage to find and walk into the vault, and discover the MIRV.

Fallout 3 is awesome precisely because of moments like these. I will say though, the appeal of open-world RPGs lies exclusively with adventure. Oblivion kind of got away with not requiring the player to be adventurous by having multiple cities already marked on your map, and ultimately the easy-to-locate guild missions, but Fallout 3 doesn't have either of those; it requires the player to be adventurous, going out and exploring, and likely surviving against odds that vary depending on the progression of the player. Your character has quite low odds of survival, which makes the player themselves feel bleak; ergo, you want to start over and improve your chances of survival. Some players, like me crave this challenge. As you progress in the game and level up, your chances of survival increase substantially. This is why people say they hate the first few hours of it, they need a suitable safety mat before they can muster up the courage to explore.

So pretty much, I'm saying, go on with your character, and realize that being on the run away from civilization is the only way to fully understand what people must go through in this kind of society. You shot someone in the face, muster up and pay the consequences. There's an entire wasteland out for you to explore, so see what the game has in store for you. If it doesn't seem fun at first, just keep going with it; I can give a 90% chance you'll look back on your first character and absolutely die laughing. If you're not the adventurous type, I can't understand why you would even shoot for this game then. As I said, open world games rely extensively on the player to go out into their world and discover the little treasures found within.

I played it for a bit and then got really bored and in the same situation of having no clue what to do.
So then I shot some random person in the face and was killed by a billion townspeople.
