Poll: "Fallout 3": Why Do Fans of the First Two Dislike It?

Huge fan of the first two. I have mixed feelings for 3. I clicked "Dislike", even though I really liked the game. I think it is because they changed too much in my opinion. I think 3 had too little of the great lore and stuff of the previous ones. THat's why I prefer NV to 3. All those conversations about The Master and New Reno gave me a nostalgia-tear, while the only thing that really got me remembering the first 2 in 3 was Harold.

I thought Fallout 3 was a decent homage to the first 2 games until New Vegas came out, at which time I was like "Now that's how you fecking do it", binned my GOTY F3 and swore to never play it again. Fallout 2 is my favourite game of all time tho.

I dislike Fallout 3 as a fan of Fallout 1 and 2 for basically the same reason I dislike Oblivion as a fan of Daggerfall and Morrowind. Because the modern Bethesda kind of sucks at making games, especially in terms of the geography.

Oh and also because of Moira.

They did actually have this in new vegas, just not as much.

Yeah I spotted a couple but in my opinion there weren't enough of them to merit a low INT run. I'd actually buy a DLC that added nothing but low INT dialogue, that's how much I missed it.

I played FO 1 & 2 when they were new and FO 2 is one of my favorite RPGs. FO 3 is ok but FO NV is almost as good as the old games. The two first games are simply more hardcore then the third one and they also feel larger and more free. The third game, and New vegas as well, are so densely populated that the wasteland feeling is kinda ruined.

Pretentious people acting on their nostalgia. That is all. Fallout 1&2 were great games, but I prefer Fallout 3&NV more personally.
So it's nostalgia because you happened to like Fallout 3 and NV more ?
lolwut? Your sentence, it makes no sense.

What does my preference have to do with the fact that nostalgic people spend their days bitching about how much better the old games are?
I played F3 first and hated it, then played 1+2 and liked it. It's pretty stupid from you to claim that only nostalgic people think that old games are better than new ones.
Not old games, bro. Just the old Fallouts.
The Fallouts are old games. way to go, you just contradicted yourself using flawed logic.
Yes, but I mean only the old Fallout games, silly.

Played em all. I like 3, but if you skipped all the side quests it's about half an hour long. New Vegas is my favourite.

I havent played FO3 or 1 or 2, or tactics, but i accidentally/on-purpose read bits of the wiki and will play them when i have the elusive thing known as spare time.

I did play- and adore/am obsessed with/am writing bizzare fic of- Fallout New Vegas, though. I liked how there was no way to find the "All Good" option because there were some pretty bad things- and some pretty goods things- that all the factions had.
It was full of shades of grey and had a sense that things were finally rising from the ashes of a ruined world into something greater, no matter what option you chose.

I do wish it was a bigger game, though. It felt small, and my previous experience with Bethesda was Oblivion and it's shivering isles expanison. I wanted to really get into it, and i could, but it was over too fast. Too fast meaning almost 200 hours in, but still.
And some of the quests were too freaking easy. I don't know how it is in FO1 and 2, but there were quests that I got really into and planned things out on paper, but never used the plans anyway because the quests and dialogue trees practically gave you the right actions and responses.

Since FONV is very much like FO3 gameplay wise from what i gather, maybe the quests are part of the reason why it could be considered a "dumbed down FPS". And while I love VATS, i can see why people used to playing with either all turn-based combat would hate it.

Anyway, I should probably go play the others soon.

Just for future refrence, another delightful (and joyfully politically incorrect) way of putting it is getting a "wide-on" ;-)

Back to the OP:

You need another option: "Fallout 3 introduced me but I haven't played 1 and 2."

I have Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, both of which have their own charms, pros, cons and annoyances. While I have not played any other Fallout games (yet), there are many aspects of the Fallout world that made me fire up the Wikia and read more of it than is strictly healthy. That said, it also made me realise just how much of the games I'd missed on my first playthroughs and so subsequent playthroughs were much more rewarding and fulfilling (at the cost of being less-surprising, I must admit).

Being cynical, I'd say that hardcore fans of 1 & 2 didn't like Fallout 3 because it was DIFFERENT! It was in a DIFFERENT place with DIFFERENT gameplay mechanics! NOOOOOOO! RUN AWAAAAAY! True this is exagerrated a little but it DOES come from my own observations and reading posts on these very forums (amongst others) so I'm not exactly talking out my arse*.

* Although I could be accused of hypocrisy, albeit indirectly. I like my cars but whenever people start pushing words "hybrid", "electric", "G-Wiz" and "Prius" at me, I run away and listen to V8 noises and read something written by Jeremy Clarkson to make me feel better.

every piece of fallout content released up to now has been good, with fallout 3's Point Lookout expansion being the pinnacle for me, as it weaves a great atmosphere in a way totally different to any other entry in the series

Wasnt child killing removed so that it could be an M-rated product(The US). Because XBOX and PS3 cant have anything above that.

True but there were also the "outcasts" who stuck to the original doctrine. Buncha arrogant pricks if you ask me! I worked with Elder Lyons and those loyal to him because, although they also had an air of arrogance about them, they're generally doing the decent thing.

Although I have never done online gaming before (and in some cases I have taken great pains to avoid it!), the idea of a Fallout MMo does intrigue me somewhat.

Went with "Fallout 3" Introduced Me, and I Disliked the Other Two. I LOVED Fallout 3, but I never played the earlier ones. Then I played New Vegas and all the "true" fans of the series said it was what Fallout 3 was supposed to be, and I found it bland... So, I'm just going to assume I won't like the old ones and not waste the money.
This. Fallout 3 was a ton more immersive than NV, in my opinion.

Also, I did try, like, really really try to get into the first Fallout games, but I just... couldn't. They were way to messy and somehow bland and boring at the same time. Sort of like how I couldn't for the life of me get into Oblivion - ten minutes in I wanted to go to bed and sleep because it was just so... immersion-less and dull.

I have done a lot of "research" on the first Fallout games to grasp the story and such though. They're more enjoyable to read about than play... for me at least.
