I went with Imperial, not for any particular reason. In all honesty, an elf or a Khajit or a Breton or Argonian would have been better for the custom class I made (an assasin with Security replaced by conjuration for distractions), but oh well. I enjoy being able to use the Star of the West power to get me out of sticky situations early on in the game.

Well I see I'm the only one to choose high elf so far, but I stick by it.
My best character in that game was a high elf pure-mage.
He never died, never wore armor, only used staffs, and killed everything all the time everywhere. Totally unkillable. I ate that game for breakfast with that character. Plus he was tall, like me, so that helped me relate a little more. But seriously: Killed everything. I rarely got hit.
What build/spells/attributes did you focus on?

I have been wanting to make a pure mage but I'm not sure which magic is the most effective for combat.

i like the argonians the best, they are immune to poison and if you become a vampire you have immunity to disease. plus if you roll a stealth character they fucking own that

Good times...But lockpicking is cake in Oblivion. I can open Very Hard locks, first try, with a Security skill of 5.

Seriously, why should I bother with the Skeleton Key at this points?
Really? Dude... I can barely manage average locks. I suck at lockpicking. I'd never have finished the thieves guild without the skeleton key.

Lock picking is piss easy in Fallout 3 though.

Notice how people don't often like to play as the orcs in the Elderscrolls series for some reason.

Argonians hands down.

I mean, they have City Swimmer!

[sub]And they can breathe underwater, but that's not as important as City Swimmer[/sub]
i saw city swimmer steal bread yesterday......4 imperial guards ganged on him.

i actually felt bad cuz i remembered when i entered town he greeted me.

Alchemy breaks the game, for one.
You want to make ass-loads of money and level like crazy? Alchemy.
Don't make it a main skill, though. You'll level way too fast. Choose something else, like Athletics or Acrobatics or something. Then walk into every bar or inn you come across, buy every piece of food, make an ass-load of potions, and sell them all back. Skill up, money up, everyone's happy. Rinse and repeat. As you get better, you'll make better potions, which means more money for the same work. Then you'll be able to make health and mana potions from one ingredient, which means that you can drink a ton and be healed like crazy. It's awesome.

For combat, I used a few spells. Multiple targets? Enrage and invisibility in one spell.
They both go off at the same time, with my invisibility lasting as long as the enrage spell. The enraged dude attacks the other guy while I go jump to a safe place and watch. Spell wears off and not everyone is dead? Cast it again. Eventually, when I was strong enough, I had the spell as an area effect spell. It was called 'shut up and dance', and everyone in a radius was enraged while I stood invisible and watched them slaughter each other. It was awesome.

Also: One second paralyze spells. Even if it's for one second, they have to fall down and get back up. Cast that for very low mana, hit them with fireballs and whatever else, hit them with paralyze when they get back up again. Rinse and repeat. If you want to use weapons, put that on a bow. 1 second paralyze on strike. They'll never reach you.

Also: damage strength. Use that instead of the fire attacks when using the paralyze spell, and eventually they won't be able to move at all. Then you can pick them off at your leisure.

Summoning works well to make fodder if you're being mobbed, but I otherwise never used it.
Invisibility is essential (Instant 'everyone give me a break' mode in battle').
Telekinesis is awesome for theft, useless for everything else.

Enchant all your clothes and whatever with shield. I had practically rags as clothes, and I had the full 85 protection.
Have a water walking spell ready to cast on your horse. The horse is faster then you are, and running on the water is safer then the forest.

And 'weakness to' spells combined with whatever they are now weak to work wonders as well.
And spell absorption is a must against mages, as is 'drain magic'.

Try those, get back to me.

I disagree! It was good for setting off traps if you didn't have any probes.

Oh wait you mean in Oblivion? Then yeah it's only goof for that

I voted Dark Elf, although I also like to play as Nord. Both are pretty good fighters and Dark Elves have higher magic resistance and fire spell damage.

Argonians were the morrowind race that I thought looked cool, then I kept using them in oblivion because they could breathe underwater and I didn't have to worry about poison or disease.

I have played a redguard once when I was trying to make a character which was a kung-fu type hand to hand fighter though.

Nord, though I play a wierd mix of sneaky warrior. So I like to stealth up, attack then go berserk sword swinging.

I like the Bretons, personally--they make kickin' mages, which is my preferred play style.
I've always gone High Elf with mages in Oblivion, Breton in Morrowind.
The high elves in Oblivion just look weird to me.

Bretons by a fair margin for me. I love me my mages. High Elves are a fairly close second, but MAN they're vulnerable to magic.

I don't really like most of the other races that much, but argonians take the bottom for me. I can understand why some people might like them, but I just enjoy them. I don't like the looks, the racial traits, the inability to wear certain armor, the stat boosts (although I might be wrong on that last one...).

Wowza... that's in depth! Good advice there.

I sussed the alchemy thing on my second playthrough alright, easy peasy money with a little grinding.

Paralyse sounds awesome, I've never tried it so must give it a go. Shield enchantments are definately more useful than lugging around heavy armour everywhere...

Good stuff. Cheers!
