Necromancy for me, Nagash has it right!

Why bother with training an army when you can just raise one up from the ground and send them out? A legion of the undead howling and screaming towards your foes lines, unafraid of their best warriors as they slowly hack and gnaw them to death?

Necromancy. I wouldn't mind living forever and all, even if it's not the most pleasant way to continue. Better than nothing though, as far as I'm concerned.

Plus, while the others are interesting they tend to achieve effects already possible by the laws of physics, albeit with time and effort. Except for demonic magic, whose details are a bit unclear here. But I'd rather not trust in demons. So for me necromancy since it does things beyond what is achievable any other way.
My take on "Demonic" anything, is that if you're in a world with demons, you need to really consider that there is a god or something like that. That being the case, "Demon" is always going to be an ultimately losing proposition. I never understand the rationale of a demonic choice, when the very existence of devils implies that you're fighting for eternity anyway.
That's a fairly good point. Even if it's along the lines of a world with multiple gods, some evil, the evil ones just aren't gonna treat you well and the good ones won't want you.

Though they could think the demons are going to rule some day and hope they'really too busy tormenting everyone else to want to torment their allies.

I never understand the desire to have an army when the basis of magic is mass destruction and control. Why bother sending an army to fight what you can nuke from orbit?
Well that is a level of control, though personally the army aspect of necromancy was never what I cared for the most

Now that.... THAT is interesting. I'd never even heard of the Dresden Files before now.

Still, I'd take Kumori's view as my own. What could a dictator possibly do if their enemies are also all immortal? Wars would be endless - so unbelievably futile that they would be pointless to wage. Genocides would be fruitless. Most importantly though: the big shots running the Earth into the ground may actually live long enough to see and feel the consequences of their actions.

Regardless, even discounting the whole immortality shtick, I just think skeleton warriors are freaking cool.

Then go get the books. Now! They are really good - the basic premise is the following: Harry Dresden is a wizard in modern day Chicago. He's also sort of a private detective and hired for various cases that require magical assistance. There are a bunch of books already and at least few more supposed to go out. I'd also recommend getting Side Jobs - it's a collection of short stories with Harry Dresden. To be honest, some weren't that good or that interesting (there were at least a couple written as sort of a joke) but at the very least the one called "Aftermath" is worth it - it's set directly after the novel Changes and it's worth a read. There are also some graphical novels but I find the actual novels better (mostly because they have more content). Saying that, I do really illustrations, but still.

I would pick necromancy but I wouldn't be reanimating long dead corpses from the earth, God no could you imagine the stench?

Instead I would bring back the recently deceased to be reunited with their loved ones. I think this coupled with a strong promotional leaflet campaign, could really help clean up the necromaner image.

I'm gonna pick "Clarkeian Magic"...magic that's really just science so advanced our puny minds don't understand it.

Electromancy and Necromancy would be a tie for me. With Pyromancy coming in the rear. What can possibly beat zombies and giant bolts of lightning? Nothing, that's what!

Demonic magic! But physic/mind magic nearly ties. Nothing like summoning the demons of hell to do your bidding(while using strange incantations). I also like seeing the power of the mind at work. There's nothing worse than being attacked by someone can torture you with their mind. Scary stuff if you ask me.

Edit: This is EXACTLY why I liked Doomed Megaopolois (older anime OVA)so much.

Electrical Magic.
Do I need to say why?

*Points to name*

Oh ... I do?
Fine then.

Quickness. The prime quality of electricity and lightning.
It comes quick and it kills quick. If you don't kill it, throw more at it.
Zap, zap, zap, dead.

That and combine it with an Archangel, and it makes a badass character.
Plus it makes for some impressive sights.

I'd go with any of Necromancy, Psychic/Mind Magic and Demonic Magic.

I'm very fond of the idea that magic is inherently evil and drives you to insanity.

I absolutely love the Mistborn series of books. In them there are 3 types of magic which characters can use based on metals.

Allomancy: Some Humans can injest and 'burn' metals inside themselves for particular powers. Each metal that has a power has an opposite power from a correctly mixed alloy of that metal. For instance Iron gives the power to 'pull' on nearby metal objects. You could use it to pull a pen to you by it's nib. Or if the objest is heavier than you, like a bronze statue, you could use iron to pull yourself towards it. The alloy of iron, Steel, allows objects to be pushed from you/you to push yourself from objects.
Another instance is Zinc and Brass. Zink allows a user to 'riot' others emotions in a local area. They can use it to make people more angry, or to feel more love towards something. This influence is usually done subtly to avoid the person noticing the erratic change. Brass, on the other hand, soothes emotions. You can make people feel less anxious, or less angry. Or you could isolate a particular emotion. If there is a angry crowd who are also upset, tired and hungry you could reduce the feeling of hunger and tiredness (the mind side, not the physical) and the upset and just leave the anger. Then a zinc burner could increase the level of ambition in the crowd, inciting a riot or rampage.
Most people in the world can't use the powers. Some can use the power of a single metal or a single alloy. Very few are called Mistborn. They can use all of them.
Metals burn at different rates, and skilled users can alter how much they are burning to vary the effects. Bronze/Steel for instance burn quickly, and is used mostly when you need it. Zinc/Brass on the other hand is subtle and takes a long time to burn. There isn't much worry about running out when you need it.

Feruchemy: Some of the Terris race (tall, peaceful, scholar like people) can use this. By having physical contact with a metal object they can store and call upon stored elements. Copper will allow someone to store and access memories in perfect detail. Pewter allows the storing of strength. Gold allows people to store wellbeing and recovery. And a fictional 'god' metal Atium can be used to store age. (And more of course) The downside to these is that when storing you have to give up some of what you have already. If storing age to be youthfull you have to spend time physically older as you fill. 10 minutes of storing a 50 year age gap older will give you 10 minutes of being 50 years younger. Storing recovery makes you ill for a set time, strength makes you weak etc.

Hemalurgy: This is the final type of metal magic. I won't say anything about it, you will have to read the books and discover it with the characters.

These magic systems are awesome, they have limiting factors and mana type levels which I like, but to actually answer the OP the ones I really wished I had was the Bronze/Steel. I guess you could call it a version of telpathy, so mixed with psychic and mental, but I like how it is restricted to only metal.

I love particularly black magic as in the stuff that comes at a price to use. Omnipotence is yours if you just give up that retched soul you know, and its not like you need that leg or arm do you?, or how about that wonderful son that you just had maybe that can get you a few things. Know how to sacrifice know when to sacrifice and the world is yours.

Captcha: Sugar

I suppose that is a magic in its own right I suppose.

Demonic magic, because I hate magic and demonic magic is always going to have ill effects and consequences.

I voted for Nature Magic mainly because there was no culinaromancy.

In games I think I like ice magic the best. Especially if it lets you get creative.
I wouldn't say no to summoning some demons either.

From the title, I thought this was more about magic physics.
I really liked the Sympathy from the Kingkiller Chronicles, because it's unique and has very defined rules to use and exploit. It's more like a new branch of science, and every application of it makes sense.
It's not like in HP, where magic is just plot device and laser guns.

On topic, I guess you could define i as mind magic though, very loosely.
I was somewhat ninjad on this but i can also recommend Brandon Sanderson's books. They feature the most unique magic systems that i have ever seen. All of them are interesting and cool but have strict rules and limits.
He also has a fun feature called the Cosmere in his books. It's basically that, while the different series generally play out in different worlds, most of his books happen in the same universe called the Cosmere, which has an overarching stories of it's own, which you find out over the course of multiple series. If you're interested it's most likely best to Start with the Mistborn series. After that you get the basics of the Cosmere and can pretty much jump into any other series of his.

I like magic that comes at a price which tends to be either demonic or necromancy and word battles with demons are fun so I'm going to go with demonic.
Obviously this not the type of magic I would personally want to have.

Blue magic. I prefer control and mill decks.

Oh, you mean....

I'm going to interpret "nature" very broadly and go with that. I think I just won the universe.

Pyromancer, baby! Woot!

I dunno why, but fire is a fun magic ability to have.

It kills all the things and you get to watch them dance while they are on fire too!

Free entertainment! :D
When society inevitably collapses, I'm going to stick close to you. Both for the entertainment factor, and because it's probably safest not to be your enemy.

Agreed there. I love electricity magic, but nothing feels as badass to me, as earth magic/bending.
