I don't mind inventive trolling. If someone finds a way to muck about then that's fun. As with the BF3 helicopter video, I couldn't help but laugh. Directly killing/griefing/blocking teammates is stupid. Put some effort into it and do funny things with the game, and I will probably play along rather than get mad.

It depends on my mood, the game, and the specific troll. I appreciate things that make me laugh.

I'll admit, I do like trolling if it's actually clever, mainly verbal taunts in the style of General Minus, but when it isn't clever, it's quite frustrating. I don't see what's funny about joining a random Left 4 Dead 2 Expert game and team killing everyone.

Trolls are basically cowardly little pricks that are afraid of the neighbor's cat and prefer to view the real world from the inside of the window. Preferably closed (curtains to).

But now and then even they feel the weight of their own pathetic existence and go online where the game becomes the real world and they become Rambo. Here they can vent some of the nagging feeling that they are a sad friendless person other people tend to pity out of charity.

Then it is back to force feeding, crying a bit and watch series while dreaming of having sex with Buffy the vampire slayer.

But I am no Freud. What do I know...
So if the trolls are like that what would that make the people who are unable to deal with them? Completely non self assertive crybaby's who are used to mummy fixing their problems for them. Who also happen to snivel and grass and tell tales when somebody goes "boo" perhaps?

It is easy to be a pigeon psychologist and apply labels to people.

Crybaby's? Says the guy pleading for the trolls... You crybaby. Here is another one. I DO NOT CARE.
Trolls are pricks. No one cares what you say about them or if it's true. This is the price of douchebaggery.
Sorry if that struck a nerve, I never intended that personally. All I was trying to do was point out that its easy to attach labels to people, it seems you took it to heart though.

No no you don't get it. I was trolling you. No fun eh? Imagine that...
Not really, read up I just shrug trolls off. Whether in a game or on a forum.

STORY TIME!!!

Playing Crackdown 2's multiplayer, someone else jumps into my city. I decide to have some fun with him and shoot some rockets. I kill him a few times, then I hear a screeching sound in my headset, its the player screaming for me to stop, this kids not a day past 10. I decide to have some more fun with him with the rockets and I start hearing "STOP KILLING ME!!! LET ME KILL YOU!!! WHAT BUTTON DO I PRESS TO KICK YOU OUT?"

Mind you he was in my city.

No patience here. If I play a game, I want to PLAY the game, not watch some retard running around thinking he's the virtual Groucho Marx.
Pretty much this. I also feel this way about the internet in general, but with online gaming it just turns more people off, like myself. There's a reason I only play games by myself or with a friend using split-screen (or a few friends in a private server like Minecraft).

By the way, messing about with your friends and not bothering people isn't really trolling. However, the moment you start doing it to piss people off, that's when you cross the line into trolling. If that's the only way you can enjoy a game, maybe you should find an alternate form of entertainment.. like playing in traffic. :D

I have no real problem with trolling. Sometimes trolls are fun and make me laugh, sometimes they don't. If it's the latter, well, they aren't exactly difficult to ignore.

Is that the trolling these days? I haven't played multiplayer games for a while now (one with a lot of people, not just 2-4 or something) but it doesn't seem that impressive to me.

Back in the days of the first massive Counter-Strike servers (Internet grew enough to make them accessible to a lot of people) me and friend formed a clan. So the six of us joined this server with around twenty people but it turned out we couldn't play together. So we joined different teams (obviously) and played to the best of our abilities to survive till the end, once it was only us remaining, we just trolled the entire server by dancing around the bomb site, play fetch with weapons and generally not killing the other team. Everyone was mad and a few even quit because of it. Gee, I didn't know 5 minutes was too ling to wait for another round.

Ad then, I remember the days of good old Diablo 2, when the Lagamancer was a viable and extremely evil build - name a necromancer and invest in all summoning spells, enter a server on a high difficulty where people will go after cows or something else challenging, rise your horde and teleport to them "Guys, can you give me a TP?" - the extreme lag caused by suddenly 50-60 new things arriving in the area, meant that everybody was most likely dead by the end of it. "But I just wanted to help you guys".

Diablo 2 again, it was easy to convince noobs that they can do by pressing Alt+Ctrl+F4.

Same game, a friend of mine was boasting about his character which was edited. Paladin, I believe, the character with charge and he was fond of it. So I just slightly edited a Necromancer - only skipped the levelling, nothing else, and offered a duel. So, my friend charges me, convinced that I'm dead (he was doing something in the order of 20K minimum damage and my character had ~1000) but Iron Maiden (curse - he returns damage to him when he attacks. Amplified) and Bone Prison (has to attack it to escape) taught him humility.
Oh man, Lagamancers were so much fucking fun. I've been in more than a few Hell runs where a pair of Lagamancers would join and cause death and destruction to everyone that wasn't a Smiterdin (which is what I was :D)
In Hardcore, there was this guy that had a lvl 96 Lagamancer (how he could devote that much time to a troll class, I do not know) and got kicks from "being afk" until we got to a boss. It being Hardcore, people get a mite touchy when their toon is killed due to lag + Iron Maiden + 'wtf is going on'

When I still played WoW, I would get kicks by running around as my belf rogue and being a douche to anyone I saw. My favorite thing was sapping random people (never attacking, just sapping) until they got mad and attacking me, leading the guards of the neutral town to attack and kill them, leaving me scott free. It was also fun to silence high lvl allies who were trying to solo a quest (you know, back when the belf racial actually did something useful) just so they would be inconvenienced and/or die.
2nd favorite thing (which was really hard to do since you rarely find people THIS stupid) was getting allies to either follow me under water or to find them doing some quest under water, and perma-root them with my drood. Entangling roots, cyclone, even bear charge, just to make them drown. Blizz killed my fun considerably when they increased the amount of breath a person has under water :(

Depends on the type of trolling. In League of Legends, if I can get a group of five friends together, we'll all pick tanks, ensuring it will take them forever to kill us. Then we get as many defense and health items as we can, just to be as frustrating as possible. See, that's funny, and doesn't defeat the purpose of the game. Now, joining a team and purposefully feeding the other team and thus preventing any chance of us winning... I hate that guy. Again, all about degrees

There are three kinds of trolls/griefers.

The first kind are the most common. The douche bags who join games with the intention of acting like a total jackass and ruining the game for everyone else around them. They will often excuse themselves by saying they're just "messing around", "trying to make the game fun", or that the other players are "taking the game too serious" but really they're just being dicks.

The second kind are a rare breed. These are the trolls that will join a game with the intention of actually goofing around. However, the actually "trolling/goofing around" bit is often at their own expense. In essence, actual humor and self-deprecation to get others to laugh, not rage.

The third kind is the anti-troll. This is a player who, upon spotting a troll/griefer in the server (who is actively griefing others), will make sure to grief the griefer right back. Making it hard for them to continue to grief others, thereby ruining their play experience.

I generally love to see the second kind show up from time to time as their often good for a laugh. I'm even one of them some times. However, I can not effing stand the first kind. They're sad, pathetic little twits who should be beaten with a sack of rocks. (and yes, when one shows up I turn into a troll from group 3)

Things like this though,

fucking hilarious.
This right here? Perfect example of a troll from group 2. He's slightly annoying at times, but generally good-hearted about it and actually doing it to make others laugh. This is a "troll" I'd be perfectly fine with.

If I want to do something "for the lulz" I do it when I'm sure everyone involved is also in it for the same thing.. otherwise it's just being a dick.
How can everyone be involved unless someone acts as the catalyst? All this means is that you are too much of a sheep to want to start something that could end up being awesome because you are afraid of pissing people off.
Or it could mean he's not a total dick? Just sayin'. As far as I'm concerned, anyone going into a game with the sole intention to grief, troll, or otherwise pester the other players to ruin their play experience is a dick. Pure and simple. If someone actually draws enjoyment from that, then they're nothing more than pathetic bottom-feeders.

As long as I'm not on the receiving end I love it. And if you take a game so seriously that you can't sit back and have a laugh by just doing stupid things and playing outside of the box, then you need to take a break from games.
Those two sentences seem heavily at odds with one another.
That's because the classic mindset of a troll (from group 1) is, "It's hilarious when I'm dishing it out." But, when it's the other way around it's unfair, mean, and . (insert any superfluous derogatory term you often hear on the 'net)

In my opinion there are two types of trolls. There are the trolls that try to make everyone laugh and have a good time; Than there are the trolls that annoy people for the sake of annoying them.
The first type I have absolutely no problem with. The second type I will report and move on. That is all I can really do.

Oh man, you've just re-kindled my fire to want to play WoW again. I had to much fun sapping people in inconvenient places. going to a starting area and enticing new players to attack so i could obliterate them etc.

And the memories of being on goldshire roofs (before flying). Trolling in WoW was fun, and actually used to lead to Horde/Alliance friendships which was a pretty fun experience.

Didn't they change it so sapping in a neutral area was an act of aggression? I'm sure i tried that once and just got knacked. :(

Are these even trolls? I mean if they don't annoy others and don't make the game hard on them, are they legitimately trolling?

Team AVO, they deserve so much icecream. The thing about trolls, (griefers, get it right) is that they are playing a different game. How can we make the game fun? We are playing a game where the objective is to ruin you, you try to stop us. There is no winning or losing in conventional terms.

Griefers are the best thing in the world for me, probably because I'm a dick though and I don't care if you're trying to fuck our shit up.

That video made me laugh, particularly the ones where the guy put C4 or whatever on leaving helicopters. To be honest, I can see how some people can get annoyed being trolled. But it's not like it's taking hours out of your day. It's like people that piss and moan that the load time before a game starts is longer than thirty seconds. And then there is no loading until they turn the game off and on.

But...I refuse to take anything that doesn't involve real world consequences seriously.
