In my opinion there are two types of trolls. There are the trolls that try to make everyone laugh and have a good time; Than there are the trolls that annoy people for the sake of annoying them.
The first type I have absolutely no problem with. The second type I will report and move on. That is all I can really do.
It can be a good laugh when someone is dicking around in TF2 as a demo using just the stickyjumper and the frying pan whilst being generally daft, everyone gets a bit of a giggle out of the silliness.

When someone joins a DoW2 Last Stand game with no items equipped and spams crude stuff in the chat then it's just 1 person seriously pissing off and spoiling the fun of 2 others.

If everyone else is laughing along, then trolling can be a lot of fun. If the intention is to spoil other people's fun then it's being a dickhead.

Depends on the type of 'trolling' really. If it's something just incredibly stupid, like someone insulting everyone else, playing crappy music into the mics, or just being general jerk, then I don't like it. If you go by what most people consider trolling (acting a certain way with the sole purpose of making others angry) then it's also annoying and makes the game unfun.

I have a bit more respect for the people who try to joke around, even if they fail in doing so. And if they're actually good then I don't mind them. But I don't consider them trolls either. As a general rule of thumb I don't like people acting like dicks which seems the main point of it all; which is something that keeps me away from online gaming in general. I don't find being insulted or having people purposefully trying to annoy me as 'fun.'

When you're lucky, you find a piece of utter genius like the Pee-Wee troll.

More often than not, though, you run into idiots spamming a TF2 server with inane trade requests, Minecraft griefers or compulsive Roach breeders (Starcraft 2).

I often wonder what brings a person to troll ?
are they really that desperate for the attention ?
are they a budding sociopath waiting to happen ?
they do as they know they can get away with it, which is a total lack of respect for their fellow players, another reflection on societies piss poor attitude to disciplining the next generation. "oh we cant tell him off it may psychologically scar them" goes kills people in RL, "he played video games, they are the tools of the devil."

Anonymity and ambiguity of the internet lets people explore their darker sides,as I said before they do things they would never get away with in RL because they know online they can get away with it.

People troll and grief because it's fun to fuck with people.
Trolling allows an anonymous, safe way to do that.
So people do.
And that is why people troll.

And let me tell you, there's nothing more hilarious than distracting someone so much they end up paying attention to me when they should be looking around the next corner for the person who's about to shoot them.
I love being the distraction when I'm playing with friends. It's always satisfying to watch some dunce get assassinated by one of your buddies because he was too busy trying to get at you.

Also, any squeaker who yells into their mic/wont shut up for two minutes/acts as if they're twice the age they really are is automatically and unintentionally trolling anyone who hasn't muted them already.

I guess if someone pays $60 for a game its theirs to have fun with however they decide to, if that means making your game experience bad your kinda stuck with it, back in my days of online gaming we would just have fun and Grief/Troll each other for hours and it was "fun".

IMO I think online players are to serious/competitive these days and that's why trolls make them so mad...they forgot games can be fun in many ways. Its not like your playing for money or to cure cancer or anything.

Don't get me wrong when it crosses the line into verbal harassment and mic music and those things, then its a problem.

In MW2 me and five friends hatched the greatest plan ever.

I dubbed it, "Spiked Tortoise Formation."

Five guys with Riot Shield, Throwing Knife, Flashbang, and Raffica machine pistol, and the lead guy (The "head") with a shotgun. We always played at least three matches every weekend with that loadout just for sheer lulz.

First we'd crouch, then raise our shields and just walk in a virtually impenetrable surrounding wall as a group. Six guys, with riot shields, throwing knives at you, blinding you with flashbangs and blasting you with Rafficas, and the shotgun popping up in the center to shoot you.

Ahh, those were fun times.

I suppose it's a matter of perspective for that to be seen as trolling, but considering we only ever did it to piss off the other team I'd say it is.

Trolling done purely for Youtube is kinda funny, i heard that some of them tell their victims after like Colter did. Some are hilarious especially when the trolled players flip out and say they're gonna hack the trolls.

That's because the classic mindset of a troll (from group 1) is, "It's hilarious when I'm dishing it out." But, when it's the other way around it's unfair, mean, and . (insert any superfluous derogatory term you often hear on the 'net)
I know, it's just funny to see someone actively preach both sides. Most people will at least pretend that it's all fun and games, rather than throwing in the disclaimer "unless I'm the one being griefed."
