I am so, so petrified by needles. It's ridiculous.

I had to have a blood test to see if I had Glandular Fever, and they took 10mm of blood out of an arm. I nearly passed out. I just... can't. Sorry.

I haven't yet, but I will once I can. I recently had surgery after a rare problem with my intestinal tract (Look up meckel's diverticulitis...it's nuts).

Before the surgery, I needed 4 units of blood (That's a lot) so I think I have to wait a while after the surgery.

But since people giving blood saved my life (Twice) and my dad's life, I'm totally giving blood when I can.

Uhh, what country do you live in that prohibits giving blood because you're gay? Sounds messed up to me. I've never heard of that...ever.
The U.S actually. I learned from my uncle (Works and teaches at Stanford) that they don't test every single sample for disease. Instead they do random screenings.

On another note, I gave blood when I was 17 and I didn't get paid for it haha

I wish we got paid for it in the USA! I think the Red Cross might pay for double-plasma donations (or whatever those are called), but other than that we just get free snacks. :)

I used to donate blood regularly though now I'm living outside the country and can't.

Once it took 30 minutes before I was done. I guess they have a rule that if you take more than a certain amount of time to donate the appropriate amount, they can't use the blood; I think I was just barely safe there.

I keep meaning to, but strangely I always have the sniffles when I hear about blood drives and don't recover until it's over...
(Really. I tend to get sick easily, for some weird reason.)

Thought I was ineligible, but found out I was OK to donate (got wrongly diagnosed with Hep a few years back, cost me my degree :S). Given a couple of times now, I've always had elevated Hb levels, so losing a bit of blood actually makes me feel better for a few weeks, win-win.

I probably will give blood sometime, i mean do whatever you can to help right?

But i've never given blood before, so it'll be a giggle.
Odd how many people seem to have things wrong with their blood on here =/

I've gone with "not allowed" to give blood, as I have (read had) a minor iron deficency. Can't for the life of me remember what it is called, but if I remember correctly I'm not supposed to give blood (I also get to sleep more and eat red meat...score). When I'm next sick enough to necissitate a blood test I've no doubt they'll tell me how good/bad my blood iron is, until then I can't be bothered doing all the setup stuff associated with giving blood.

EDIT: My blood type is O rh Positive, which is compatible with a lot of other blood types. Boo yah!
I live in the USA and I don't get paid shit.

O negative is the rare type that everybody can use. O Positive is the most common type and it's what I got. Only 3 others can use O Positive I think. Also, any one with type AB Negative can receive any other type of blood.

O Neg. = Universal Donor.
AB Neg. = Universal Receiver.

I've given blood once. It didn't really do a lot to me. Mind you, I was already quite stressed that day. It hurt for a bit, yeah, but I didn't move after that, so it was fine. My arm ached for a day or two afterwards though, so I was crochetty like an old man. Still, it gave me an excuse not to lift stuff at work, so give blood, people!

Everyone should go to give blood. If I was in charge if youre not willing to give you wouldnt get. Take your chances and see what happens after a car wreck. Scared of needles is a cop out. Suck it up and go give blood.

It is discrimination not accepting blood from gay people.

Where is the tick box asking "Do you bum your girlfriend?"

Straight up discrimination.

I'd like to give blood but I can't, I'm terrified of needles.

I did ask someone from a blood drive a while back if they could use a knife instead (which I think freaked her out a bit) but they couldn't for hygeine reasons.

Hmm, almost read that as a rant but it's pretty true and I agreed with it. But I guess i'll be on the non-recieving part as I refuse to give blood for reasons stated in post #83.

Not really...you have to be the "catcher" to stand a high chance of infection. Your gf should definitely have that tick box though. However, you stand a lot better chance of getting the 'truth' out of homosexuals(who do it singularly) than heterosexuals(who don't).

I think this place is called prison.

But seriously, I can understand your frustration. You just want to help people. I don't like the labeling of homosexuals as "high-risk" because it feels too close to "degenerate" which makes me want to scream.
Well, you can see where they are going with this. AIDS and other STDs supposedly spread much easier during homosexual intercourse. Then again, I don't like having to be asked "Are you a prostitute?"every single time
It's not because of that they are homosexuals. It's because they ten dto have anal sex. Wich straight people usually don't have any problems with having either. So the question shouldn't be if you're gay or not. It should be if you're fucking someone in the ass, or have been by someone ..

I'd love to see that question being asked of middle aged builders and such.

1. Have you injected any drugs in the last 12 months?
2. Have you had any contagious disease in the last 12 months?
3. anal?
