Poll: Goth Clothing

I dig women in goth clothing. Guys generally look pretty silly, though. Okay, strictly speaking the women also look silly, but in a hot way. No, my problem with Goths is related entirely to architecture. I love gothic architecture, but when I tell people of my/our generation that, they think I mean set pieces in Anne Rice movies and immediately assume I'm into Goth music, which I most definitely am not.

If we're talking about American Mall-Goths and Hot Topic... it's a pathetic over-commercialized rip off that has no business existing.

I am incredibly grateful that Hot Topic is yet to appear in Australia.

It's mostly an American thing... and thank goodness for that, Europe is kept relatively pure by comparison.

I tend to like it and incorporate it into my everyday look, although i guess it taints my country.

I don't mind certain Goth style clothing. I don't wear it myself, but I can't deny that some people really nail the look and look quite good doing it.

I used to be a goth but I stopped identifying with the scene, too many wankers. I like the clothing but it often ends up looking crap on people because it's often highly tailored. People don't select the right size, over accessorise and end up looking moronic.

I'm a great believer that to wear gothic clothing well you need a certain personality...and it's not the introverted aloof personality a lot of goths sport. To wear gothic clothing well you need to be fashion conscious and a natural showman. Gothic clothing on teens hudling like penguins just looks stupid, gothic clothing on someone who accessorises well and moves confidently is captivating.

Same with make up and the jewellery, you're better off with less than more. One or two pieces of jewellery, especially if it's pewter, looks better than going in with ten claw rings and rapper-quantities of neck chains. Make up works the same, a little powder and some eyeliner works far better than full on corpse paint.

*nods* I freely admit that my knowledge of the goth sub-culture is lacking, but my impression has always been that showmanship plays a big part. It's making a statement, and that requires a lot of self-confidence. It's the reason I was always rather impressed by the girl I used to see wearing a top-hat around Uni.

Depends. As with any look, a lot of getting it right requires a person to know what does and does not suit them. If they get it wrong, then it looks silly and affected regardless.

Goth isn't supposed to be 'metal'... They're not even nearly the same genre...

To be fair, there's a slight crossover... I still don't really see the relevance, as you said goth's aren't trying to be Metal.
Anyway, I think it looks fucking awesome. It is somewhat similar to the Black Metal look, which I love.
I have a friend who does the goth look. All the time. Even in summer here in Australia, with temperatures of 40 degrees (Celsius). Man is dedicated lol.

It's fine when you're young, but it's definately something you're supposed to grow out of.

You know, I hear that said about both goth and Metal, and my answer is fuck no. Why should you "grow out of it"? It's not harming anyone, if you like the way it looks why should you stop?

OT: AS long as girls are the ones pulling off the style sensibly (i.e. not over the top) then I'm cool with it (Take Stocking as an example, pull that stuff into real life and you got something I'll agree with). But guys just look weird when doing it.

Also has anyone seen/heard about the style of 'happy' Goth? I think I encountered it on the internets a while back and I found it freaky.

I like it. Although I've never dressed as a Goth, I think it looks pretty awesome (especially on women, they look incredibly attractive to me). It's different and it's fashion that makes a statement. I guess I enjoy the boldness of it too. The dyed hair is exotic and pleasing when done well and the clothing' dramatic nature is nice to see sometimes.

As with anything, some people can pull it off and some can't. The more subtle the better I find though and preferably on adults.

As well as hating the "non-conformist" aspect of it I have the additional problem that I figure something must be wrong with someone who spends that long on their appearance. I want to leave the house I grab jeans and a t-shirt, not because it looks good, but because it's convenient, clothes don't define a person.

Personally, I like the goth style very much. I don't really have that style, though, the only thing that's remotely "goth" is my black coat.

Black clothes =/= goth like the base stereotype potrays. Neither does wearing spiky jewlery (thats more 70's/80's punk/retro or metal depending on the style).
No, true goth shits bats, drinks bloodwine and writes bad poetry. And thats just the clothes. The makeup and hairstyles make bad techno with whiny lyrics.

Serious note tho, Bondage is not Goth either tho they can go hand-in-hand. I honestly think goth is emo's older brother, and can't really stand either of them.

Gothic clothing and accessories are pretentious and showy. It is nothing but an attention grabbing deviation from the norm, designed purely to turn heads, and if you as a designer disagree then are simply full of yourself.

The style of dress is both unconventional and overly-extravagant, doing nothing but clashing with the norm in an attempt to "be different" and as such stand out. It is not clothing, it is a costume. Any that would even consider dressing in such a way in a public scenario that doesn't merit a costume is acting as a child.

Yes, I will judge the people as a whole based on how they dress, because the style of clothing reflects a desire, however latent, to "be different".

I tend to wear all black and grey clothing anyway, because I'm color blind and can't color coordinate anything else.
