I'm not exactly an expert, but from what I've seen it can look great if you can carry it.
Even though he always tried to fight off the label, Robert Smith's hair is the one gothic style thing that I've always wanted to do myself. Big boots and make up aren't really for me, but that hair is amazing.

It looks pretty cool, its just that goths themselves in my experience can be the same sort of "celebrating individualism by being completely identical crowd that I see more and more of these days.

Ps: must admit though, my desire to don a red leather jacket a la Dante (old Dante, dammit) still exists. Think if I didn't put a shirt on I'd get a hell of alot of other peoples vomit on my jacket.

Isn't that a Vandal?

Anyway, I don't know what goth clothing entails. I assume black is heavily featured, and black is always stylish. So I guess I don't have anything against goth clothing.

depends on what you mean. i, myself, wear black clothing. i dont go to the mall and get tripp pants. no, i spend as little as i can on my clothes. all very plain and non trendy. not this fucking mall bullshit you people think is goth today. why put a label on who i am by pointing out what i like to wear?

I'm quite fond of goth clothing from an observers perspective at least, though more in the steam-punk range of the spectrum than the horribly over the top, chunky spikes and chains everywhere cliché that seems to dominate any gothic clothes store I see.

Steam punk and victorian is allright. But I think goths are just way too rare nowadays. Sure you have your wannabe goths that think avenged sevenfold and cradle of filth are goth, but where are the cure style goths? To be honest nowadays goth clothing is just chains, baggy trousers and some sort of band tshirt. It never really suits anyone to be honest, allthough the steam punk and victorian can suit the right person, but not many people wear it properly.

i don't have a problem with the clothing style, it's fine but not for me, there are however, a group of people i know who like to wear goth clothes and they are awful..they are the most awful goth hipsters i have ever seen, i avoid them like the plague if at all necessary.

so yeah, whenever i think of goth they pop up into my head and piss me off a bit.

I'm in general much more fond of steampulp/victorian fashion than specifically gothic stuff. I like a lot of colours, ribbons and flowing designs and general happy, exuberant clothes. However, I like some of the formal, last century aesthetic that goth clothes have going for them, and I'm very fond of my corset.
I love that style!
Heavy Red
Rose Mortem
Kambriel
Gallery Serpentine
AZAC

But my budget and choice of profession doesnt bode well with it so I leave the Romantic/Victorian goth for the special occasions

That'd be the vandals my friend.... Or did the Goths do it as well?
Rome was sacked 3 times in that era... once by the Vandals, twice by the Goths.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sack_of_Rome
410AD - Rome is sacked by Alaric, King of the Visigoths
455AD - Rome is sacked by Geiseric, King of the Vandals
546AD - Rome is sacked and depopulated by Totila, King of the Ostrogoths
OT: I'm sort of a fan of what was considered 'goth' when I was a kid. Simple, dark, practical clothing. Often trenchcoats, generally with combat boots. The new, fashionable impractical stuff can suck an egg.

I'm quite fond of lolita ... I mean moitie is all around awesome ... but I can't really get into most western influence style clothing ,....

Unless it is 80's fashion ... everybody may say they hate 80's fashion, but you cannot deny the coolness that was 80's fashion. If everybody started wearing 80's fashion again I think people would remember what fun was again.

I don't mind goth clothing. I actually find all cultures and subcultures to have both beautiful looking and ugly looking people, and the alternative clothing and makeup seem to make the beautiful more beautiful and unique, and the ugly more ugly. I find this to be true about scene, metal, etc. as well...

It only works on girls. I think corsets, fish nets, and the like are incredibly hot.

I think the reason it appeals is that people new to bothering with fashion generally prefer black as its an easy colour to use but otherwise I generally don't like the 'emo' side of Gothic and more the serious black attitude of the clothing.. which is why I went through a phase of military Gothic.. that didn't end well..

Captcha - substance arouse.. I think this Captcha thing is trying to get me high.. how dare it..

Me too. I wish there was a male equivalent.
Defeat the purpose wouldn't it? ^_^

Well there are male pseudo equivalents for that scene, but come on. As if you'd pass up the chance to wear a cutsew edged in lace, a pinafore and overknee socks with a delightful pair of platform mary janes and a bow in your hair and the thickest, fullest petticoat there has ever been?

It's like faux modesty. You stand out yet you don't show anything ....

Sure you annoy people when you walk in doorways and take up three times the amount of space you should normally take up in civil society, but that's half the fun. Besides, everybody else can go and get fucked ... I want to look pretty and they just have to put up with it <.<

I just want a decent starting point. Like classy Victorian goth for beginners.

that being said I've seen some fantastic Victorian influenced goth in a storei n Newtown here in Sydney ... want to buy stuff ... but moitie keeps eating my money <.<
