I just hate that. I usually save weapons so I can go crazy on some save point just for the kicks. It is actually funny that in GTA IV you don't lose your weapons in going to the hospital :)

Depends on the game. Since you're taking about Alan Wake, a horror game, it makes sense that they took your guns away, but say, in a game like Prototype, when they took away my powers and gave me the super tumour, man was I angry.

My question: "You care if I just place my arm around here like so?"

Her answer: "Actually I do mind"

Not super embarrassing on the grand scale of embarrassment but it was a pretty funny moment.
Wrong thread? Or did she take your 'gun' away?

I hate it! I'm always saving rockets and grenades for the epic boss fight and then they just take everything away for me.
I usually forget about it in 10 minutes anyway.

Usually works in the Tomb Raider games.
Except Tomb Raider 3... I went to Nevada last. ALWAYS go there first.
Oh yeah, definately. If you don't go there first, you can't get the rocket launcher.

Oh and it didn't really work in Angel of Darkness either. What the hell is up with taking all my favorite weapons away mid game and not letting me get those weapons back? I know we get different ones, but I liked the Desert Ranger, damnit! (Yes, that is correct. It's obviously based on the Desert Eagle, but that's not what they call it.)
I think that was actually a bug: you were supposed to be able to get your weapons back after that apartment level, but couldn't. Which meant going through most of the rest of the game with a crappy ancient pistol, fortunately with virtually unlimited ammo after the ammo glitch in said apartment level.
True. Although the infinite ammo is offset by the fact that the Rigg is weak as hell.

Also, there's a level skip code that you can go back to previous levels and get all your weapons back.

Taking your GOD POWER like in Symphony of the Night can be annoying. But gives you a brief preview of later parts in the game.

Using Alan Wake as an example as it is what you have referenced.

I found that game to be borederline tediously easy even on my second playthrough on nightmare mode.

It really is not an over statement to say the only challenging bits were the bits where the game removed weapons or the flash light from me, more over, from memory the instances where you lose your weapons fit the story (excluding of course the episode interludes).

The only time I would agree that it doesn't add anything to the game is when they take them away arbitrarily without reason and without any playable challenges with no weapons. For instance between each episode in Alan Wake.

Stalker: Clear sky does this at one point. Luckily,
1) there's a box right next to it for you to store your stuff so it won't go missing.

2) The game puts a big marker on your map and says "Those two fucks who stole your guns? right here. Go fucking ruin their day and get your stuff back."

I don't mind it so much, as long as it's not my whole inventory. Like in Halo. Usually when you leave a level and move onto the next, the game will either leave you with your last weapons, or replace them with something, depending on the logic. In the first game, if you left an area and went straight into a new one on the next level, your weapons and ammo were the same. But if you would logically have spent time in the Marine base (never seen in-game, but seen in the novelization), then your weapons would be replaced with human stuff, no matter what sort of Covenant weaponry you were packing. And that carried on through the series, in that logical order.

So yeah, I'm kind of used to the idea of having my weapons taken from me. It honestly doesn't faze me much, unless I've been building up weaponry for a specific purpose in the next part of the game (like if I keep a rocket launcher all game to take down some big-ass boss or tank, then I have that taken from me right before the actual fight...).

It's ok when they do it once at the end of a game, but that's about it.
agreed -- although even then i find it a simple contrivance, since games can't go more than 5 minutes without you killing something with the weapons you worked so hard to obtain, retrieving your equipment is always MUCH too easy.

Guard1: Put his stuff over there.
Guard2: Wait ... in the same room? Should we at least lock it up?
Guard1: No. In fact, leave it all in plain view and then we can just leave. What's the chance anything could go wrong?
Guard2: ...

As long as I get it back. It can be fun. My most memorable was in Drakken: The Ancient's Gates you're taken prisoner and have all your weapons and armour taken and you were just left to fight your way out with magic and whatever you could scavenge off the gaolers. It was pretty damn awesome.

EDIT: Also, your weapons were at the very end of the dungeon so you had to fight off big snow-yeti-things with clubs and magic.

Yeah, it's annoying. I think games should find a better way of heightening tension. If you don't want me to have such powerful weapons, don't give them to me. If I need them for a section, it should be challenging enough that I use all of my ammo. If I decide to play the game a harder way to save ammo or a gun for a rainy day, you shouldn't take it away just before the rainy day. The idea that you could lose your guns/ammo at any given moment just makes it pointless to manage your weapon/ammo usage.

I liked how silent hill 2 did it. The game did not take the weapons away, you willfully gave then away.

I mean if it fits. Like you have to break out of a prison it makes sense to not start with guns but i would expect to find the locker with all my shit in it later on in the level

I like the Half-Life 2 way of doing it where they take them away in each Episode so they can re-do an introduction mission, and then they took it away at the end of HL2 but replaced it with a more powerful gun.

I think that you should never have everything you've gained taken away at once (although it happens in Summoner and that works pretty well) because that defeats the point of working to improve your character.

Prototype had a section where you couldn't use your powers at all and then expected you to take out an entire base. That section made me rage pretty hard.
Were you able to get through it though? If so, maybe you don't need them at all! LOL, you proved to beat a section of the game without them.

OT:I've never played a game that takes my items away, for some reason I never get those things in my games, well, except for small times in metal gear and stuff when you had your stuff taken away before you were tortured and put in jail. But that's part of the story, not in the middle of gameplay.

Uh... I beat it, but it sure wasn't fun. At least in BioShock when they took away your choice of plasmids and gave you random ones sometimes they would be better than your regular plasmids and you could still do it. Plus when they took your weapons away for the first time you could still use plasmids. In Prototype, the only thing you could do was hijack vehicles but to do that you had to get up close which is not easy without your powers.
