Pretty much what I do. Or just what I would be if I were the Undead sorcerer. Necromancer FTW! But yes, I remain my same gender in games.
This.

Sometimes I change it - usually if there's some sort of ingame benefit though.

It usually depends on the look and feel of the character. I know a lot of fighting games make the females really agile, and that's a prefered way for me to fight. In games like WoW, it depends on what i'm doing. some characters just have dumb animations.

In MMOs specifically, I usually just pick whatever gender is the least populated. For example, back when I played WoW now and then, I think I had the only female Dwarf in the entire server. It certainly made me stand out from the crowd.

Lots of pen-and-paper RPers do the same thing. I've done it more than once, just because I felt like it.

But what about in single player games?

I have just started a fallout 3 game as female because I finished it twice as me, a guy. Online however I am allways me, or a knightly 6'7 version of me.

I always play as Zoey in L4D because she is smokin' hot.
hehe but you see less of your character then the other 3 in L4D.

I have a tendency to play with female avatars, I just tend to like them better. I don't identify with characters in most games or roleplay or try and get free stuff from people.
Often I just like the look of the females better then the males, like in wow my nightelf and drenai were female, but tauren, undead and human characters were male. In WarOnline my chosen was male but elf was female.

Oblivion and Fallout I went female, I think more out of an effort to not directly identify with my character. I guess I like to guide my character more then play as my character.

I don't for most games. The only one I'll play as a female is fighting games b/c some of the character's moves and speed work better against certian foes.

Generally, if the class requires metal armour or "tinkering" of some sort (the fighter, the paladin, the alchemist, the gadgeteer, whatever the game offers) my ingame avatar will be male. If it emphasises agility (ninja, thief, monk, ranger) it'll be female. For druids, priests and magi, it's about a 50/50 split depending on my mood. Finally, regardless of what she's wearing, if she wields a bow, she's a she.

This isn't me consciously setting down any rules, of course; it's just what a moment's thought and thinking about all my past characters (and there are a lot of them) has revealed to me. In Pen and Paper RPGs, I'm always male though.
This is, of course, assuming the genders are equal in terms of abilities. I mean, I'm not going to refuse the chance to be a cool class just because boobs are a prerequisite.

Actually I thought I would mention that whenever possible I play an Ambiguously Gendered Character.

If I can put enough Armor on that you seriously can't tell what my gender is I am happy. It's fun to confuse people by using a character that no one can get a read on.
Haha. I do this sometimes. Not on purpose, I just love being an elf with a long ponytail.

the only game I truly play online is Guildwars where I only have a Male warrior but since I never talk or type to people(solo) I don't think it matters if I had a Female character instead.
Why shouldn't people play as a different gender how many people do you know that are Mages or Warriors/Druids/Barbarians?

For me gaming is a part of sinking yourself into the role of the character, which makes it a hell of a lot more fun. If I had to spend 100 hours of playing, trying to make myself believe I'm a girl...

I usually play as a male, but occasionally, I will play as a female. when I am male or female I never accept gifts from people though, my pride gets in the way... I like to earn my +10 sword of kick***ery, thank you very much. It may take me a slightly longer time to get to the top, but when I do, I can say that I worked for it, rather then had it given to me. but I digress, I like to play as both, mainly because I find both genders are fun to play as. the reactions that you receive, and interactions you can get differ depending on the avatar. (I actually wrote an entire paper for school on this once. Got an A-.) And I am not just talking npc of course.

I generally try to make it myself in single player but on occasion I do change gender online. I don't do this to get stuff, because of class or because of the butt thing. I do this to take the piss. Like I love seeing peoples reactions when I win and they think it is a girl.

Example (I know it's not very good but still): Original Halo on PC

I chose a pink Master Chief.

I get into the game and the first three chat things I get are:

"I like to rape pink"

"How big r ur bewbs"

"Easy Kill comin up"

It is pretty funny. Then next time I go online with my normal character, A white master chief and the first three things I get are:

"Howdy Y'all ready to play"

"It's Killin Time"

"This is gonna be easy"

I play a female in Fallout 3, because I thought it would make for a good character.. it did. I usually switch it up from time to time, mostly to get some diversity

90% of the time I play as a Male because I want to create a version of myself. I've seen few posts saying stuff like "would you rather stare at a female or male for hours".

...

They are digital - they arn't real - if you honestly enjoy (you know what I mean!) staring at digital women, then theres something drastically wrong.

The other 10% that I play as a female is on MMORPGS - I had brief spell on WoW and Runescape. On Runescape, after struggling for ages leveling up with a male characters, I got bored and changed my gender (using all my money). All off a sudden I was incredibly popular, I actually got given a lot of free items and some higher level asked me to be his "gf".

I was weirded out, but I soon realized that just meant he would give me MORE stuff. So I played a long for a while and leveled up insanely quickly due to their help.

This shows how sad / desperate certain people on MMORPG's are - it was much easier playing as a female avatar.

Well in fairness, MMORPG = Mostly Men Online Role Playing Girls.

But yeah i know what you mean, most of the female players in my old WoW guild where actually male, it was always fun to try and guess if they where male or female from what they saaid in guild chat.
