I got it twice. My third 360 has worked for longer than the other two so I think this will be the last one.

yes, mine RRoDd, I was playing Fallout 3 when my screen suddenly became checkered black and white then died. I saw those three rings and freaked out.

I think the key phrase is "in the poll". I wasn't going to bother but I thought "why not" and did the poll. Two and a half years without a problem for my 360. I've used it, my kids have used it and I've taken it to school and let the students in the Game Club I advice (I teach high school) abuse it pretty much every week for the last two school years. I suspect most people who haven't had any problems haven't bothered with the poll. I only did the poll out of idle curiosity and replied to the thread because my own experience was so different to the typical poster... no telling whether I've been lucky or typical of course.
Agreed, a self-selecting poll isn't as accurate as one which uses other selection methods. On the other hand, the plural of "anecdote" is not "data" as you have probably heard before, by which I mean to say (without sounding snarky) that I value a collection of many user experiences over one or two. Google "ring of death rate" and you'll see figures pointing to a failure rate between 15 and 30%, a wide margin of error I'll grant you- but would you buy an item with even a 10% off-the-shelf fail rate?
I'm still mulling the issue over, anyway. I haven't bothered to look up Wii and PS3 fail rates yet, since I won't be buying a console until some time next spring, but this is a pretty important issue to me as a prospective consumer and I'll be giving it careful consideration.

it's not 100% but frankly the amount that have responded would point that it is more than 15-30%

the thing is people who haven't had an xbox fail will respond, it's not overly great science but there is a lot of truth to it, it will give you a good indication of things that happen

Yep, my xbox has RRODed for the 4th time, this time out of warranty. I'm hopefully going to pick up the materials to fix it myself today, looks like a fairly easy procedure to be honest.

Mine was broken but through my own stupidity, I layed it flat while a game was loading. It made a grinding noise and ruined the disc, and over time it stopped working at all.

BUT its all better now because having it leaning aganst the wall at an angle seems to solve the issue for some random reason.

Okay so i took into account a rrod twice as doubel the number of poll results..and counted more then twice as three rings to be fair.
etc...

so we have 328 rrod's
80 "others"
total of 408 critical crashes.

and only 104 unscathed 360's. so out of 512..only 104 are error free.

So on an escapists average of RROD's is ..dammit i forgot i fail at math..what like 70% if i had to guess.

Either Microsoft is lying at 54.2 failure rate..or ppl are flaming this poll. Either way its unacceptable for ANY product to have results like this. Especially if a good number of functional 360's are "rigged" somehow with custom fans or overly wide open areas..leaning against some foreign object, rested on angles, even heard some being wrapped in cool towels etc etc etc..
