I think the key phrase is "in the poll". I wasn't going to bother but I thought "why not" and did the poll. Two and a half years without a problem for my 360. I've used it, my kids have used it and I've taken it to school and let the students in the Game Club I advice (I teach high school) abuse it pretty much every week for the last two school years. I suspect most people who haven't had any problems haven't bothered with the poll. I only did the poll out of idle curiosity and replied to the thread because my own experience was so different to the typical poster... no telling whether I've been lucky or typical of course.
Agreed, a self-selecting poll isn't as accurate as one which uses other selection methods. On the other hand, the plural of "anecdote" is not "data" as you have probably heard before, by which I mean to say (without sounding snarky) that I value a collection of many user experiences over one or two. Google "ring of death rate" and you'll see figures pointing to a failure rate between 15 and 30%, a wide margin of error I'll grant you- but would you buy an item with even a 10% off-the-shelf fail rate?
I'm still mulling the issue over, anyway. I haven't bothered to look up Wii and PS3 fail rates yet, since I won't be buying a console until some time next spring, but this is a pretty important issue to me as a prospective consumer and I'll be giving it careful consideration.
