Always some variation on "Samuel Taylor Coleridge". No, I don't know why. No, I'm not going to stop.

Either with a pun, or with the first "cool sounding" yet appropriate thing that comes into my head. Like, if I'm playing an elf, I try to make up a name that sounds elvish. If I'm playing an Imperial, I pick a Roman-sounding name. If I'm playing a space marine, I pick an Earth name.

I have a friend with the last name of "Telfer"

I thought to change it slightly for a girl. I came up with "Tiefa" for Soul Calibur's Chronicles of the Sword.

If it's a game like Mass Effect, or Fallout, I'd use a normal name; Claire, Abigale, Lizzy, et cetera. If it's for something like Elder Scrolls, I'll try and make a fititng name - spending 30 minutes with many websites open to name my Nord for a game I didn't like from my previous attempts, and although I liked a lot more with that character, still didn't like Morrowind. Varjal I'll recycle for Skyrim though. Elves I'm more likely to use normal names, depending on the lore, and the name.

World of Warcraft naming though was excruciating; many hours spent trying to get a good name for that character and for their lore.

i'm going to have to go with 'Other' on this'N.
sometimes i use one of my "go-to" names; AcE, 1shotkil, or Mitch (don't ask)
and other times i do silly names like ASSFACE or xXThundercuntXx ( <-- that's a personal fav)
and on some occasions if i'm feeling lazy, i just put the letter A....
so i guess it all depends on how i'm feeling

I usually name the character after a character in the game I played previously
that way I can track when I played what game
I know its stupid, but I like it!

For multiplayer shooters, it's almost always a pun or reference. I like to use Unknown Soldier for Call of Duty as a throwback to the older games. In TF2, I like to make puns because it fits the more humorous setting.

For MMORPGs or WRPGs, it's usually an original name I made up. Neurey and Eaohji were my main and first alt, respectively, in World of Warcraft. Occasionally, I'll make a reference like with VanHelscream, my Orcish gnome hunter.

Pokemon games tend to be joke names like Fagballs.

Most JRPGs, I keep the original name.

I never use my actual name. I know people who do though. It seems weird to me.

It depends on my mood, varying between my own, names that just fit and of course for games like Pokemon, the stupid/funny names.

I usually keep default names because I'm not ever good at thinking of any other decent names (occasionally rename a Pokemon or two though). That and laziness.

Lore friendly names normally. Or sometimes I hear a name I really like on something and try to remember to use it on the next game I have to name a character.

I make names that are references to others...

...more often than not I'll use "Piper" or "Xeta", (which are characters that I've drawn and grown to like!)

I'll typically go with a particular name I made up a long time ago for a roleplay I was very fond of.

But sometimes I'll use my own name, or make a name fitting the setting.

I name them like Cynois. Because I'm completely original and that's the only name I bother with. 8D

I tend to go by Isaac, after Golden Sun's protagonist. It's a regular name, and usually lore friendly too.
If playing as a girl, I go with some variant on Joanna. A variant on my own name, that usually fits in with the world.
