I often use a variant of my name (just like my forum name) or else a "funny" name but it has to make sense in terms of the character/game.

for example:

In Diablo 2 I named my Assassin "Murderella", my Barbarian "Huge McLarge" and my Amazon "Stabitha" (that has the addition bonus of being a simpsons reference from when the show was still good).

If its something like Final Fantasy I'll use the default.

Fallout, Elder Scroll, or Mass Effect type games my own name because it is after all a Role Playing Game.

And finally something like World of Warcraft I'll use a random name or make up my own, because thats half the fun right there.

Joe, the only answer I could possibly give you at this stage is "YES". I've done it all!

I use a Referential Name that would fit in with the game world. For example: In Oblivion I named my Wood Elf Theif Alberich after the name of the dwarf from Das Rheingold and German/Norse Mythology. Although he is a dwarf, I remember him stealing the gold and that stuck with me enough.

For the record I don't name any of my characters xxSephirothxx or anything weird that wouldn't be a name in the game universe.

My name, a pun name if it allows (Toma Hawke in Dragon Age 2), or a completely random name.

Wherever Possible the defult name.
If there is no defult Steve or Jimmy!! and thats jimmy with the exclaimation marks.
Jimmy!! is an inside joke with a couple of friends and steve is just a go-to name for these sorts of things.
Oh and this is regardless of the character's gender. My female Fallout New Vegas character for my second playthrough is called jimmy!!

Answer for me: Mostly referential, but it's usually a mythological reference. Like "Martina" Shepard. Why? Martina is the female of Martin, which in turn derives from Mars: The God of War.

Sometimes though, I just choose a name that sounds good.

I tend to use the name tonwsey for everything rpg related and then i connect them somehow... like my mass effect space captin townsey shepard is the great great great and many more great's grandson of my fallout 3 charector townsey... also in fall out new vegus i made my charector townsey jr... or i just name them somethign silly like Quisby
I hope you do realise that Fallout 3 takes place in the year 2277 and Mass Effect in 2183, in other words Fallout 3 takes place AFTER Mass Effect... except they don't take place in the same timeline at all, as they're completely separate fictional settings. Frankly, if you had any sense of "RPing" you wouldn't try to connect dots between separate books.

As for me, I very rarely, if ever, recycle character names. I always make sure that my character's name makes sense within the lore of the setting and I've even done researches into Anglo-Saxon, Irish and Elvish to make sure that my character's names actually made sense in their supposed native tongues. I'm quite allergic to seeing elves running around with Latin or English names, heh.

And yeah, I also like to have the meaning of the name fit the personality or refer to a physical trait of theirs, I've used fairly common names before, but, y'know, only when it makes sense to have them. My New Vegas character goes by the name of Evelyne par example.

I usually use the default name, but if I'm feeling sassy when I start the game, I name it something funny. Those names are either FAGBALLS or FUCK ME

Usually call myself either 'brightside' 'cause its my nickname, or any alteration on the name 'Geoff' because its just my favourite name. Im gonna call my son Geoff, im gonna call my 2nd son Geoff no.2 and so on. Its just what I do.

In general, I use the default name, but I get a bit more creative when the game sort of encourages you to make your own character.

Default if there is one. Otherwise I just use the names I always use. Unfortunately, I'm not very creative when it comes to names, so it could be hours before I come up with something I like.

I have absolutely no naming conventions for games. I pick names at random or cycle through a list of names already used by me in other games. Its arbitrary as hell.

first of all, its so odd that your name is pedro because i sometimes go by that name haha what a weird cowincedence, and further more i dont really take much notice of the date of it, i mean come on fallout has an abundance of 50's stuff and mass effect is set in space with L.E.D's on everything, you would think mass effect was further in the future if you dident know for shure, and i dont really care if they take place in the same timeline... i make up the timeline in my mind, its all my own personal timeline of games i played and how i connect them.
