Hey guys, just wondering what you guys usually do when a character name screen pops up.

Do you click the default name?
Do you use your own name?
Do you just use a regular name? (like David or Kelly)
Do you use a name to fit the theme? (like Evelyn or Aden in a fantasy)
Do you make a stupid or funny name? (like Fagballs or Professor Titty Wiskers)
Do you choose a name that references a different game or other media? (like those annoying "xxxSephirothxxx" names)

Feel free to share the names you use most. I personally just go with the default on pretty much everything.

I use the default names in You Dont Know Jack because those are always funny. In Elder Scroll games I normally name my characters with the last name Natch so all my characters are related.
Any other games I name my characters "Phil Atio". cookie for figuring that one out

I use the default names for games without customizable characters, like say, Final Fantasy 7. In games like Elder Scrolls or Fallout, I'll usually make a lore-friendly name.

I usually come up with a weird name that sounds similar to the names that I use in my writing (bizarre naming convention notwithstanding). So, it'll be faintly a Greekified forename and a seemingly completely meaningless and strange sounding surname (I like the 'zh' sound).

It depends, if im playing DnD or something and im an elf, i'll pick an elfy sounding name
If im playing an mmo i'll probably pick a referencial name, although not with such a horrific amount of x's
If im playin a (semi) serious rpg like mass effect, i'll pick a name that i think fits the character, usually for my femshep its elizabeth
And if im playing a non serious rpg like fallout i'll pick something short and sweet, like timmy or lily

My character name for men is always Rabidiah. It's a play on my screen name for every website I go to and the name Jebediah.

No matter the game I always name my characters the same thing, so if people play multiple games that I play they have more chance of seeing my name, and I become more recognizable. It's actually a decent way to build a friends list. I have a number of people I game with who remembered my gamertag from another game and wanted to know if that was me. So steam, xbox live, PSN, and any other games that I play, I always have the same account name.

Just use my own name. Quick and simple. Not that fussed about the name of the character in the game

Depends, serious female characters are named Sarah or Sally, serious male characters are named John. Random characters get stupid names like my most recent Fallout 3 character, Ben Dover.

It depends on the game and what kinda mood I'm in at the time. For example, for every Dragon Quest game I've always named the hero/main protagonist "Goku" partially because they share the same character designer and because Goku is a character I look up to. Other games, like the D'n'D games, I'll try and pick a name that sounds like it fits in with that world.
I never pick goofy/funny/stupid names because I try to take at least somewhat seriously and because I look at the player character as an extension of myself and I sure as hell wouldn't want a goofball name. But even in the cases of naming your rival in Pokemon I don't do that, because I that's a rather assholeish thing to do and I don't want to be like that. Yeah I know they're just fictional characters, but still...

I don't use my own name because I can't create myself in-game anyways.

And in games such as the Elder Scrolls games or World of Warcraft, I always use a name that is appropriate to the race I'm playing.

I go with whatever sounds better to me at the time
If it is MY character I use one of my regular names depending on the gender of the character. If its supporting character or something like that whatever sounds better.

I find naming fantastic heroes and mythical beasts completely and utterly mundane names endlessly entertaining. Not just commonplace names but ones that you hardly ever see attached to somebody heroic. For instance I named the aeons from Final Fantasy X names like Steve, Mitch, and Roger. It might be just me but conjuring a giant dragon out of the ether only to have the name Stuart pop up is funny.

I have about four to five names I constantly reuse for all my characters, regardless of setting and such. They usually follow a rather specific order, with the first character being my favorite of these names, the second being my second favorite, and so forth. I might break this rule for fantasy games at times, where each of my four or five names sometimes has a class associated with them, but this isn't too consistent: the order that I create the characters is usually how they get named.
