I'll generally call my character something like VIOLATOR!!! or DESTRUCTOR!!!
But for some reason in Mass Effect I gave my character a proper name.

I name my characters after what they do/will do.
For instance all my Oblivion characters are mages so I named all of them Mage; which really fucks with my filing system.
I also have a Good Shepard, an Asshole Shepard and my adept is called Magical Shepard.
Oh, and my Siren in Borderlands is called Tits.

Any other games I name my characters "Phil Atio". cookie for figuring that one out
Ar ar ar, badum tish.
OT:I usually just use my name, I'm far too lazy to search through the lore for a name I won't hear at all.

I've named heroes "HERO". I've named them after myself. I've named them after whatever I was thinking. I've named them the default. Basically, I just pick a random name and use it.

I usually reference to someone in my life, or a celeb, primarily in mass effect. all the other games that let you name them are, like, zelda games, where i tend to name him Link, but i've done fagballs, amongst other things 0.o

I usually use the default name, but if I'm feeling sassy when I start the game, I name it something funny. Those names are either FAGBALLS or FUCK ME
Hm, I wonder what show on the Escapist I've heard those names before...

Referential. I'll either use an inside joke that I share with friends or have a theme I name all my characters. Once in a play through of FFVII I named all the characters after soda brands. Other than that, I'll go with default names.

I usually try to think of names relevant to the atmosphere (modern, medieval, etc.) although if the main character is really cool, on rare occasions I'll use my own name instead.

I have a pre made list of names I use which essentially reference eachother, but they fit certain types. For example, if I use Renald De'Mere, its likely a Paladin type. It was my NWN Paladin character, and my Knights of the Nine character.
But as my repitoir of characters increases, so do the names. Playing DnD it comes up more. I think a good deal about my character names though, but often I use names I like from other sources. I used the names Taven and Daigon for two important characters of my last campaign who were opposing brothers, named after the two opposing brothers from Mortal Kombat: Armaggeddon for example.

Console games I tend to just use the default name. If there is no name available, "Chaos" is my typical standby.

In the case of online games, Chaos gets taken within the first five minutes of a game going live, so I tend to be a little more unique. If the game has a considerable amount of lore behind it, and I know at least some of said lore beforehand, I'll try to make a name that's at least semi-lore-friendly.

Otherwise, I'll simply use referential; I'm particularly fond of the Japanese language, even though I can barely speak three sentences worth, so whenever I make a new character or name a new pet I'll pop up a Japanese Dictionary and look up words for a good half hour or so.

I've been chadachada or chadachada123 for basically as long as I've lived. In games with unique usernames (MMOs), I always go with one of those two.

Otherwise, I tend to use my name. That, or Chada, since that works too.
