Poll: How do you name your game characters?

It usually depends on the game but I go for one of the three: My name, my gamer name (s0meNo0b), or one of the preset character name's i've created over the years with a certain appearance.

Um,, sometimes serious and sometimes funny.

A good example:

Falloutm 3:Ross, taylor and Kevin (My actual name)
Fallout New vegas: Pete, sam and BREADBOX, and Table Leg (They're tribals.)

I take my middle name and mix up the letters 'til I make something I like that fits the face and personality of the character. If it's a simple character for instance with quite a normal background I'd call it something short and easy to pronounce.

A lot of the time I'll use the name Berenzen (male) or Melith (Female), simply because they're names I came up with years ago. If not those, I'll try to come up with a name that seems suitable to the character I am creating.

Depends on the game, really. And my mood, I suppose.

Counting old chars on my fingers now, it seems I like jump back and forth a lot when it comes to chosing names... Some old names include;
- Names with some mythological connection (Illion (misspelled), Azaradel, Rosiel)
- Lore-friendly names (Archimodeus, Serizstraza)
- My own name (Sarah - mostly only in Pokémon, but I had a draenei hunter named Zsarah *shame*)
- Referential names (Sanguinne (misspelled), Nuitari, Tanagra)
- Really unimaginative names (I played through both Oblivion and Morrowind as a dunmer named Enigma, because I have no imagination)
- Names of characters I've created for various terrible comics and stories
- "Funny" names (the most recent being Douche, saviour of Hyrule)

Why do I have so many characters...?

I generally gave my characters names from games I fear will become obsolete, yet were truly worthy.
I always name female character Karen, after Karen S'jet, a character from Homeworld.

I will go with the default name, unless I find it unfitting for my style of play, or simply lame. If it's the case, I usually switch it out for a lore-friendly name.

I always use my first name for my main playthrough, and then on multiple ones I either make a joke/pun name (such as naming Hawke in Dragon Age 2 "Ethan")or use a name that starts with the same first letter as mine.

I make up names that seem appropriate for the game. I often spend a long time coming up with them. Examples:

Asheron's Call: Cirrus Ganderheight, Kendall Stormbright
Fallout 3: Cobb (no first name, just Cobb)
Champions Online: Jupiter Jones, Nikki Nitro, Cygnus Alpha
Borderlands: Frankenfragger (Brick), Dirt Nap (Roland)

Sometimes the name dictates the appearance and mannerisms, sometimes the other way around. I thought Jupiter Jones sounded cool, but had no idea what he would be. Eventually he looked sort of like Iron Man crossed with a clunky old diving suit. With the extra-wide body structure, and huge, rounded red armor with white/yellow trim, he looked a little like Jupiter. My Fallout character, on the other hand, I had already decided to be a mercenary butt-head. I named him Cobb after Jayne.

Sometimes the characters share families -- Kendall was only one of three Stormbright siblings I had in AC, the others being Kirk and Kylie. I used the last name Weatherbie in half a dozen tabletop games, with elaborate explanations for how characters from Shadowrun, Rifts, and Call of Cthulhu were related.

I tend to do funny names.

For example, Shepard's first name is German.

I guess it depends. If the default name sounds cool to me, I'll leave it as it is. If not, I'll just do some variation of my name. More often the latter rather than the former.

Either my own name, or a referential name when I'm feeling silly.

I named my Fallout NV guy "Deadpool"
I named my Shepard "Samuel L Jackson"
If I could, I'd name my Saints Row 2 guy "Batman"

Most of time I'll use one of a few names that I keep using from other games, other times I'll use a random name generator until I find something I like the sound of

Do you click the default name?
Do you use your own name?
Do you just use a regular name? (like David or Kelly)
Do you use a name to fit the theme? (like Evelyn or Aden in a fantasy)
Do you make a stupid or funny name? (like Fagballs or Professor Titty Wiskers)
Do you choose a name that references a different game or other media? (like those annoying "xxxSephirothxxx" names)

Feel free to share the names you use most. I personally just go with the default on pretty much everything.
