Bit like that old show about Mrs 'Bouquet' (when the spelling was B-U-C-K-E-T)

Can't blame people trying to make a sophisticated name out of one that really isn't :p

Doesn't make it any easier for learners when so many of the letters and dipthongs are just straight up pronounced differently anyway, though.

Least obvious... Euro = Oi-ro. Really? And Auto = Ow-to of course.
Try Swedish pronunciation on then. Euro = Evro. Odysseus = Udyssevs.

OT: I rhyme it with hat. You know, like they say on British telly. Never heard it on American telly. Unless said by a British character and they've also rhymed it with hat.

Rhymes with hot. That's how I say it.
twot?!?!?!?!?

Seriously guys, how do you spell it?

Yours sincerely, Another Enraged Southner
Swat is spelled with an "at" as well, yet it is pronounced how I pronounce twat.

Like a lot of people have said: it appears to be a regional thing.

Be warned it is a ZP video, so it contains swearing, but at the 1:59 mark you can hear how I think it is supposed to sound.

Being incredibly English, I pronounce it "Terr-watt"
Henceforth, i picked 'other'
Being incredibly Irish, I use more amusingly offensive words. Like bollocks.

Good ole Colm Meaney sneaking it into Star Trek.

It's got a fragging A in it, why the need for a poll?

Need to pronounce it as it's spelt, so it rhymes with hat. Never heard it pronounced any other way in my puff, and being Scottish I hear it said a lot, like every day. :D

Why would anyone, barring a speech impediment, pronounce twat as "twot"?

Would they also say "the cot sot on the mot"?

Did they get the joke in the name of the internet café in GTAIV, or did they think Tw@ was pronounced "twot" as well?

Speaking of the internet, is their e-mail address "I_cont_soy_vawels_praperly ot hatmail dat cam"?

I think twat and twot are two completely different things. Twat is a slang word for vagina and, as somebody pointed out, twot means Total Waste Of Time.

This phenomenon could be an example of people learning their vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation by hearing words (mainly from films and TV) rather than by reading them, subsequently getting them wrong when writing them down, probably due to mishearing the original word.

As an example, I've seen people write "ladder" instead of "latter", as in "Do you think this game sold badly because of poor reviews or because it wasn't advertised enough? Personally I think it's the ladder".

I think it's regional.

I've only ever heard English, Australian etc rhyme it with hat and American people say it like hot.

As always with language there is no right way to say it. Look at China; someone from the north can't even understand someone from the south.

When in doubt, use ****. Unless someone pronounces that as can't or something...

Oh god you're right... why isn't it spelt SWOT :(

Kudos to you Darque. ;)
Erm, that isn't conclusive evidence. There is something called hetronyms. A list of some here: [link]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heteronym_(linguistics)[/link]. Having said that, if Americans want to pronounce it "twot" let them; after all they say "erbs" instead of "herbs" even though there's a bloody H in there =P [sub][sub]I heart Eddie Izzard.[/sub][/sub]

It rhymes with hat, but I see where you can get thrown off.

In America S.W.A.T is pronounced Swot. So there's that. (SWAT Team, not the verb, rather the noun. Like how combine has differing pronounciations for the verb and noun.)
