Its hard to say, but I have to go with not really. I'm sure he didn't mean it as a race thing, or to purposely offend the couple. The DJ knew what music everyone at the party would like, not the couple, since its his job.

This stuff right here is the majority of "racism". People finding it in places where it doesn't exist.

Actual racist actions are few and far between(which is great), but crap like this happens all the time, and there's always someone that thinks that because the two have different skin tones, one of them is being racist.

This. DJs are not some sort of old style Jukebox. You tell them what the event is and they figure out what sort of music gets played.

I think the real racist in this situation is reality.

Cause I mean, really. Hispanic people into salsa music? That's just pandering to stereotypes.

Eh, kinda hard to tell.

Salsa music is not popular with everyone, and he was probably entirely right in saying that no one else would like it, or at least not to the degree that they would. When you have a dancefloor of people to please and a selection of hits that have proven again and again to be succesful in getting them entertained, you play the hits. I don't even like artists like Lady Gaga, Kesha, Lily Allen etc, but if I've been out with a big crowd and everyone has started dancing it's music that I feel comfortable enough with to go along with it, partly because I acknowledge that my preferred music, classic rock and roll, is equally not fun for everyone.

So his actions in not playing it are totally justified.

However, depending on how he intended 'your music' to be intepreted, he might have been being personally racist. If he just meant your music as in 'music which I have not approved for my list' then see above. If he meant 'your music' as in 'the music of the Hispanic people' then yeah, racist. Still probably right, but racist. I suspect though that he would have said the exact same thing to me had I brought along a CD of Rainbow's greatest hits. Would that have made him racist again British people?

If he had played that song, he would have probably been yelled at and kicked out.

He did the semi-right thing and no he isn't racist.

Wow.

Just because the couple were an ethnicity other than white, it was automatically racist, right? Give me a break dude! Just another sorry ass excuse to bring up racism...

That's not racist; that's his job. The other guy showed himself for a whiny little brat, playing the race card the moment he failed to get what he wanted.

uh no not at all?

if you really are dying to hear your own music then go ahead and leave, the DJ was hired for a specific reason, which is to play party/dance music for the majority.

edit (dsiregarding i hate country music as it is) if i brought a country music cd up to the stand and he said i'm not playing that, there is no way in hell i'd think "RACIST!"

seriously, just because your not white doesn't instantly scream racism

Yeah, I don't think this is a valid "race card" here. The DJ was just trying to keep most of the people entertained. Would the music have been enjoyed by the whole party? I don't know. The OP said in an edit that it was salsa music, so I doubt many would have enjoyed it. I'd say that this is a case of not being able to satisfy everyone all the time, so it's better to satisfy most of the people most of the time.

Personally, I hate most rap music and country music, but every bar I've ever gone to plays one of those or the other. How happy do you think that makes me? Still, I go to hang out with friends and try to have a good time.

If this guy wanted to listen to his music so bad, he could have listened to it somewhere else. Like his house, his car, anywhere else. Or got others at the party to ask the DJ to play just one song. If a few different people had asked for it, they would have proved the DJ wrong.

Race had nothing to do with it.

The guy was spinning music for everybody, so he plays what the most amount of people who make up that everybody want.

Also race card guy is a whiny baby.

he was probably right anyway.
and since when have hispanics been allowed to pull the race card..?
Last I checked, Spaniards and Spanish-derived (look up the root of Hispanic) are white.

And no matter how often I get discriminated against because of my skin colour, as white folk, we're not allowed to call others out on it.

I have a friend who is a DJ for several clubs and is hired occasionally for special events and he told me that most DJ's will not accept requests unless it is mainstream popular music already in their playlists. There is no way a DJ would ever play some randoms foreign language CD, they need to do a good job and keep the majority happy so they get hired again. Playing one bad song can ruin a DJ's rep and future potential income. It is no racism, he was just doing his job.

If you guys had Poker Face and the like planned, then the DJ was right on. Salsa does not belong at that kind of event.

If you were at a high class wine tasting, you wouldn't ask anyone to replace the smooth Beethoven with rap.

So at my college each year we have a celebratory party towards the end of the semester in order to give ourselves a big pat on the back for surviving another year in the curriculum. At this years celebration we hired the same DJ that we've been hiring for all of our other events bc of nepotism and he is a pretty good DJ for the cost.

One of the students knowing that we were going to be getting the same DJ brought one of his own CD's for the DJ to play for maybe a song or two. Here is the kicker, this is a Hispanic couple that wants to hear some music that they like to listen to instead of Lady Gaga for the millionth time. Upon seeing the genre of music the DJ says, "No one else is going to like your music except for you two." The man pleads with him to just play one short song but the DJ remains adamant that only music that a majority of people will like should be played.

This upsets the man who goes on to say that he has never felt this kind of racism in his life. I was wondering how people on the escapist feel. Was the man in the right or the DJ. Was the DJ doing this out of racism or was it maybe just his misconception as to what was best for the party.

Personally, I see where the DJ is coming from but I think its unjustified. In his place I would've played the one song and knowing this guy he and his wife would've been awesome on the dance floor.

Also, have you ever been in a situation where you thought someone was unfairly being labeled a racist. Or have you yourself faced racism?

EDIT: It was Salsa music.
its not racist, and salsa music while awesome doesn't fit the venue, it would have confused people and disrupted the party.

I would vote for that.
Same here.

Not any real obvious racism.
