i think it's kind of insulting as well because it's like saying 'i don't like what you do. i think i know how to be better at your job, here is what i would play'. dj-ing for a very mixed crowd it especially tough, so no i absolutely don't think this is racist.

The DJ at my own sweet sixteen party wouldn't play any Metallica for me, and I doubt he was racist against young white girls. He just understood that my aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, parents, and sister would not like to listen to Metallica. Because they're lame.

It didn't seem like he was racist, it was being an ass not playing one song. Unless he said no one but you spics then sure. But since he said you 2, and they both were connected to the song, then they would like it. And the rest of the people probably wouldn't

I DJ online for a radio station, and although it's been a while (actually was planing on making a return this weekend) we were based out of city of heros, and have since then moved on and broadcast live from other online games....WOW, L4D, Aion, Rift....etc. Anyways, for the most part a lot of the DJ's play rocking stuff, techno, metal, nerd core, hip-hop...and just about everything that would work well in a game while playing it... (i cant speak for everyone, but this is what i tried to do) and as much as i love playing requests for people, and to give people what they want so they can sit back and enjoy their game and a selection of music i pick out for them and that they pick as requests......there will always be someone that wants to request something that can bring flawless shows to a screeching halt, and in a blunt way....fuck the mood/vibe up for everyone.....
Now i'm not sure what type of music this couple was trying to get the dj to play, but lets say the dj was playing mostly dance music for the evening and this couple picked a cd that is no where near a dancy vibe/mood....then personally i think its the couple being selfish in a way, and really not considering others at the "event"

My dad DJ's as a side job, and he's told me that unlike most DJs he's met, he'll play a song if you request it, because he believes everyone should get a chance at getting the song they want. Not every song has to please the whole damn crowd. But no, that wasn't very racist.

Racist? No, but still a bit of a jerk for not playing at least one song. If he was that unsure, he could have asked the host if the music was ok for just one song, esp if the man and his wife could really dance to it. Salsa is neat to watch, they might have even been able to teach a few others some basic moves so that they could dance to.

Totally not racist. I've seen people shout and boo through songs if they don't like the music. He was just avoiding that situation. A good DJ refuses niche audience members. You're there for the crowd as a whole, not two people. If anything, the DJ isn't racist, the audience members are.

It's the man's job to keep the party bumpin'. You've got to respect his decisions as a DJ in regards to what he chooses to play and what he doesn't.

If he said, "Get that taco bendin' shite (or any other racist epithet) out of here, I'm not playing it," then THAT would have been racist.

If you guys had Poker Face and the like planned, then the DJ was right on. Salsa does not belong at that kind of event.

It's not racist, but it may have been a miscalculation. I'm a metalhead, so I have no experience in these areas, and I will say that no DJ would take my song requests, for the same reason this guy didn't. The music doesn't suit parties like that.
Now, whether or not people would have enjoyed some salsa music, I have no idea. But the DJ wasn't motivated by racism, he only thought no one wanted to hear salsa. Maybe he was right.

At the beginning of the party, I can imagine them turning it down. A few beers later, well that's a different story. ;P

OT: Not racist in the least. Bringing your own CD to a party? I don't believe I've ever heard of someone doing that. What made them think the DJ would play it? He's got no idea what's on the CD, even if it's popular it's so easy to rename something. He's already got a playlist, I don't see any reason he'd take the CD.

That is NOT racism. Hell, he probably saved their asses from real racism. If some Indian Bollywood style music came on you can pretty much guarantee that half of the people there would start joking around, being silly and break out stereotypical Indian dance moves. This would make it awkward for the couple and they probably wouldn't enjoy it in the first place.

PLUS, the role of the DJ is to keep everyone happy with catchy songs that everyone can get into. Playing a song that no one likes will only serve to dull the mood and it'll take another few damn good songs to get it back. That's a really important aspect too.

So no, I DO NOT think it was racist. I can see it being interpretted that way, but in the end I think the DJ made the right decision.

So at my college each year we have a celebratory party towards the end of the semester in order to give ourselves a big pat on the back for surviving another year in the curriculum. At this years celebration we hired the same DJ that we've been hiring for all of our other events bc of nepotism and he is a pretty good DJ for the cost.

One of the students knowing that we were going to be getting the same DJ brought one of his own CD's for the DJ to play for maybe a song or two. Here is the kicker, this is a Hispanic couple that wants to hear some music that they like to listen to instead of Lady Gaga for the millionth time. Upon seeing the genre of music the DJ says, "No one else is going to like your music except for you two." The man pleads with him to just play one short song but the DJ remains adamant that only music that a majority of people will like should be played.

This upsets the man who goes on to say that he has never felt this kind of racism in his life. I was wondering how people on the escapist feel. Was the man in the right or the DJ. Was the DJ doing this out of racism or was it maybe just his misconception as to what was best for the party.

Personally, I see where the DJ is coming from but I think its unjustified. In his place I would've played the one song and knowing this guy he and his wife would've been awesome on the dance floor.

Also, have you ever been in a situation where you thought someone was unfairly being labeled a racist. Or have you yourself faced racism?

I've always wondered that. Hispanics are caucasian, you can't pull the race card if you're white. Especially if you're a white male.

If I had gone to the DJ at my Prom and asked for some Tool instead of all the the techno-rap stuff that he'd been playing all night, I would've gotten the same response.

I'd call that a lack of courtesy. And besides, I'd take Salsa over Lady Gaga any day, but I'd still prefer Tool.
