Because hype is fun, hype bonds. It's why I still do it, it's very exciting to jump up and down in glee when hearing new information about Star Wars: The Old Republic, it's just fun. But that doesn't mean it will block me from judging the game, I learned that from Spore, nor do I let other people's hype hype me up. I only hype myself up, perhaps share it with 1 or 2 close people, but the mob is irrelevant to me, only my own fun is relevant to me.FalloutJack said:The inverse proportion of the mouth versus the brain. If everyone plays Halo, then I should play, right? If everyone plays WoW, then I should get an account, right? If everyone is hooked on smack, crack, and booze, then I'd better go under for the eighteenth time, am I right?
Wrong.
If everybody's singing its praise, then it might be good, but it can't be THAT good. But then, why are the voices so loud? If hype means nothing, why do it? If I should ignore it, then other people don't need to SAY anything. But...people being people...have to blather. And that gets on the nerve. If you don't understand, then I believe you haven't been talked to by enough dumb people. Nobody, short of Buddhist monks, are THAT tolerant. And if you ARE such a monk, whachu doin' on the internet, yo?
Bearing in mind, of course, that you're really looking for logic in the wrong place, and an argument with the wrong guy.
And that's why I don't understand your reasoning. The mob is still 'controlling' (by lack of a better word) you; if 'they' shout about Halo, you won't play it. You're still letting the mob guide you, just the other way around. I can understand why people want to join that great mob of shouting fanboys as humans are a natural pack animal. But what I don't get is people who want to cut themselves loose from the mob, like what you are doing, but in term still are letting the mob make decision for them. You still care about 'their' judgement; why?
And yes, I talk to those stupid people on a daily basis. At one point I just stopped caring, just decided to not pay attention to the fanboys. It's why I still enjoyed Halo 3. All that talk about it being the greatest entertainment release of all time just bounced off me. Why would I want to bother with what other people have to say about it? Of course, I'll be happy to listen if someone has a well-thought out opinion about it, it might point out some flaws in the game, but in the end all that counts is whether I will enjoy it, and it's a choice you make if you let fanboys spoil that fun for you. Fanboys (or anti-fanboys, in the case of say Twilight) have nothing to do with the actual content of the game, movie, book or whatever, so why let them influence your enjoyment of the product in question? I just noticed that there was no reason at all, so I stopped letting them influence me. It's quite easy.
As for why I'm on the internet, for the same reason why I hype myself up; fun. It's a pretty entertaining place.
