I live in America, and, in spite of being raised with the Imperial system, I want Metric.

Just go Metric!

Grew up with imperial so it's what I use and I don't think we should switch. To switch would throw everyone off, nobody would know anything anymore. Best to just stick to what we use.

Yes... perhaps when you learn to spell, I will learn Metric. Also, Grams don't translate well, because, hey, how many grams are in a pound? 454 (really 1 pound = 453.59237 grams, but hey, round up)? What kinda fucked up unrounded number is that?

How about the rest of the world takes a nice big shut the hell pill about getting on America's case that it doesnt metric. Is it a better system? I suppose, though I like to be difficult. Really, what is America hurting by not using it?

Besides, the distance measurements are awesome, and speed as well. So nah, thats oka. I'll keep it, and the rest of the world can deal. Remember, America isnt trying to push Imperial on anyone, at least so far as I've seen. The rest of the world can take a step off their metric high horse and leave Imperial alone.

I seriously hope you're joking.

A) His spelling is fine.
B) You don't use grams in conjunction with pounds. How many grams to a kilogram? 1000. What kind of fucking awesome rounded number is that? That's why you don't use pounds, because pounds are shit. That's like saying since there's 1.361 US dollars to a Euro, the Euro is a shit currency and doesn't make. Come on guy, really?
C) We're allowed to have discussions about things, and we're allowed to state our opinion on them, just like you are. We can discuss measurements if we want. It's not our fault that Metric is undeniably better.

If you disagree you clearly hate freedom and are a communist, socialist, or some evil combination of the two.
The funny thing is, that actually doesn't enact Poe's Law. Thank Loli for that. First time this week.

I hate you because I was 5 seconds away from posting that.

OT: I... am indifferent. Actually... I don't know what the two systems are, to be honest.

Off to Google I go...

Well first of all, here in America we call it the Standard system of measurement.

But still, most of the people I know use a mixture of the Standard and Metric systems.

Our days are broken into 24 parts, which are then broken into 60 parts, yet nobody complains about our system of time. Computers read in binary and many programmers use hexadecimal, base 16, as a way of more easily translating into that system.

My point is, it does not matter. The human brain is not so rigid that it requires base 10 to be used effectively. Get off your high horse.

Metric IS easier. But what happens when you try to spontaneously introduce a different way of thinking? People don't get it, or worse. Metric has to be gradually introduced here in the US or else people won't know how long a kilometer is.

Americans will always think in inches if they grew up with that. My German teacher has the same problem, but inverted. Sometimes when he goes to get a haircut, he'll get asked if he wants an inch cut off, and he'll say yes, thinking in his mind only a centimeter.

i belive we should make a measuring system that only we use for the most part and make it the best because we said so!
oh wait...
actualy i think metric is more practical BUT im american and here in america we speak american, have leaders that last for 4-8 years and use the imperial system damn it!

see what i did there? a bit of a steriotype of an overly patriotic american...its funny to me

When it comes to distance, the metric system is a million times better. However, as I see it, Fahrenheit is actually the superior temperature measurement. That's right, you heard me!

Basically, degrees Fahrenheit are smaller than degrees Celsius, allowing more precise measures of temperature that are still perfectly accessible to the average person. What advantage does Celsius have? It makes it slightly easier to know what state water is in. Oh joy.

But yeah, centimeters beat inches for practicality ANY day.

Socialism is purely an economic system whilst communism is a socialist economic system combined with an ideologically similar political system. A combination of the two would be an economically-focused communist.

Also, communism as an ideal isn't evil; it's based upon community well-being and the idea that you exist to help others around you because they exist to help you. The evil in communism comes from the fact that it doesn't work and people have to be forced into this mindset.

Capitalism is based upon existing entirely for yourself and your progression in social status and income, which is built on stepping on those of a lower class and income to increase your own. This is one of the only socio-political models that works in reality due to it being based on a mindset greed - which people don't have to be forced into. So which is evil, really?

I hope you've enjoyed my over-analysis of your joke.

A) No sir/ma'am I am not. This is an example of the pettiness the world has to have against America and the other Imperial using countries of the world. And no, its not. There's a few misspellings, such as Practicle (practicAL), tempratures (tempEratures), and collossal (colOSSAL). Some people miss lessons, you are one.

B) Yes really. And you know why? You go from pounds to metric tons. POUNDS to METRIC TONS (2000 lbs. = 1 MT). How is that not a nice even number? its not a nice round number, and when you have to go from one to the other (as I had to do constantly in Chemistry and Physics), its nice to have nice even numbers. Also, I wouldnt go spouting off about the Euro. The only reason its so strong is its the nation of a continent. European countries (Britain in particular) is in the shitter economically in terms of individualness and its only saving grace is the average that those countries make.

C) I deny it. There for, it is deniable. And others have said they like Miles of meters and MPH over KPH. SO it is deniable. Your logic falls apart. and very well, we are all entitled to our opinions. and we are all entitled to our own customs. So why does everyone get on America's case, when really it doesnt hurt the world to use it. You dotn see America telling everyone to switch to the dollar, even though its the international choice in Currency and English is the international language of business (and you can go ahead and say how the dollar is doing poorly, but really, who IS doing well?). SO why when someone says that the Imperial is their preferred method, they get blasted out the water, but when that same person DARES to question Metric, its a crime against God?

"The metric system is the tool of the devil! My car gets forty rods to the hogshead and that's the way I likes it."

Yeah, but seriously though, Metric is a better measurement for science, engineering and any other sort of job that requires calculations of mass, distance and volume. However the amount of people who uses these calculations are usually outnumbered by those that don't so you aren't likely to see people adopt something they aren't familar with just so they can be on the page on a smaller fraction of the population.

Australia cnverted from Imperial to Metric in 18 years though [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metrication_in_Australia], so change isn't an impossibility for those older nations.

I'm American, and I'd like us to use metric, but imperial is so embedded in how we've constructed this entire country, that to switch would actually make building measurements really inconvenient.

I'm an American, and I've done work on several archaeological digs in Italy, where we do all of our measurements and calculations in Metric, and I have to say, I like it a lot better. Having a worldwide standard of measurement would be awfully convenient.
