So Escapists, its time for another hard-hitting question - which is better?

CATS

OR

DOGS

Personally, I prefer cats. Smaller, easier to take care of and SOOOO FLUFFY. Also portable. But dogs are great too.

Yes. I made a thread not about boobies.
I even kept it clean.
I tried real hard too.
You're persistent in clicking these, aren't you?
Well, there isn't anything here.
So stop looking.

Okay, I may have lied a little.

Cats are more accutely aware of our patronizing attitude towards them as pets, dogs aren't. I don't know if that makes them better or worse.

I guess it all comes down to choosing between the heart and the mind. Eventhough dogs are smart, and probably smarter than cats, they seem driven way more by their "emotions". Cats seem more interested in the bottom line and what will benefit them. They're also obviously more self-involved, as opposed to dogs who will put their heart and soul into pleasing you.

But then dogs are also a more pathetic species. Cats demand actual respect.

I myself am a dog man through and through.

Dogs like to be your best friend, cats are super aloof and have destructive whims...

Can't I like both? Why is that never an option?!? Because honestly, I'm quite fond of both cats and dogs.

You were so close, Paragon. So close.

Anyway, I'm deathly allergic to cats, so automatic dog vote.

That's a real tough one as I have both. My dog is like my (albeit really stupid) best friend. Loyal, courageous and loving. My cats are kind of just there. Much like my wife they'll only cuddle up to me when they want something and spend most of their time doing their own thing. Yet I respect that more than my dog's hopeless dependence.

I had to go with cats though because they're cuter and related to my favourite animal - the tiger.

Well I think it is pretty obvious as to what I would pick.

Dogs also have great utility. Be it sniffer dogs, sled dogs, attack dogs, seeing-eye dogs or pet therapy dogs. A wide range of skills and personality there. Cats could probably only be pet therapy animals, which is cool, but dogs can be trained into what you want or need them to be. Be it a companion or vicious attack beast.

It is perhaps their desire to please that is both their weakness, and that which gives them a greater potential.

Cats are cool, but I am somewhat biased against them because I have a feral cat problem where I live, so there's that.

I can enjoy a cats company, but I can play with a dog and they'll enjoy it back.

If I had to choose, cats. Along with being fun to play with, they offer plenty of entertainment in their own right (more so than a dog). They become attached and trusting without becoming clingy, so it can be quite nice to see the cat showing signs of trust while not bugging you for affection all the time (well, most of the time [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_Jw2fiIfoo]).[footnote]The cat in that video is a Bombay. They're known for being a good cat for people who like the affection of a dog.[/footnote] They also tend to be a little more elegant, rather than constantly being in goofy slobber mode. I also tend to prefer their somewhat aloof nature.

That said, dogs do tend to be more enjoyable when just visiting someone. They instantly trust just about everyone, so you can get most of the benefits of a dog just by visiting someone with one. Most cats seem to take more time to warm up to people, so you may not even realize they're there when visiting someone with a cat. However, for actually living with the pet, I'd say a cat is better.

Dogs, definitely. Cats are great and all but they're never going to be as close to a human as a dog can be. We made dogs, more or less. Dogs are part wolf and part human, in many ways.

Cats are fine and can be sweet, but up against dogs? Not even fair. Dogs are simply more emotionally and socially complex animals, and just...cuddlier.

People who prefer cats want a pet that's less attached and dependent. That's actually fine, but I'll take friendship in it's purest and most stupidly hopeless form any day. Dogs bro.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Cats, you must earn cats trust, dogs seem to be just willing to give it to anyone.

Dogs are superior to cats in every way I can think of. How is this even a contest? I think we got some Egyptian cat worshiping BS going on here.

For me, cats (my avatar might give that away...fun fact, I chose it because I came to the Escapist during the whole Gamergate thing, and I wanted an avatar that would be perceived as friendly). But that aside, I find it easier to connect with cats. I like them for their independence - they know how to show (and receive) affection, but are also acutely aware that they pretty much own you, and know how to get what they want. It's kind of like children - bratty, but you can't help but love them.

It's so hard to pick, because they both have their own merits, and they're both awesome creatures. However, I'll have to give my vote to trusty old canines. Not only have they earned their title "man's best friend", but with all the selective breeding throughout history they're basically are our own creation now.

Dogs are loyal, trusting, affectionate, obedient, and sociable; whereas cats are kind of selfish, cautious, reserved, indifferent, and aloof. Being a selfish, asocial arsehole myself, I can kind of related to cats more, but dogs still get my vote.

A contest between smelly, noisy, drooling, leg-humping creatures with ADD that insist on constant attention at all times from everyone, and adorable kitties?

That's not even a vaguely close contest! :p

I prefer cats over dogs. I have nothing against dogs, but they tend to be much higher maintenance than cats and I don't think I could maintain the energy to keep one for more than a week.
