I'm allergic to both, but it's worse with cats, and so this question answers itself. Cat lovers are much more annoying on the internet though.

I liked LRR's point. If you took your dog, and made it the size of bulldozer... it would still love you. Do the same with a cat, and you would be "played with" until all your bones were broken and you were dead and it would leave your corpse on the doorstep of some larger creature.

To be fair to cats, I like them better than toy dogs. I a working breed dog kind of guy. I like a pet with some utility.

I prefer cats. The two pet ones I've had during my life whilst growing up were super nice. I miss them a lot, wasn't there for the death of either, which makes me feel bad, since we were really close. Like, my first cat followed me to primary school to look for me.

Not to say I don't miss the one pet dog I had. Golden Labrador, didn't have a single mean or sensible bone in her.

Kittens are fuzzy, but they often grow up into shits. Dogs are love. Dogs are life. Dogs, dogs, dogs.

Dogs. Always dogs. I've always found dogs cuter than cats. Mainly because they're way more expressive and they respond far more intuitively to your own emotional state. So it feels like they actually make an effort to cheer you up.

If I had to choose, cats. Along with being fun to play with, they offer plenty of entertainment in their own right (more so than a dog). They become attached and trusting without becoming clingy, so it can be quite nice to see the cat showing signs of trust while not bugging you for affection all the time
You haven't met my cats. Since losing my dad, one cat and my dog in the space of a year, my two remaining cats have decided that they are slowly being abandoned and have become super clingy and needy all the time. They are driving my mum nuts because they won't leave her alone. She is actually happy summer seems to be here because it means that they will go out and do cat stuff.

Mind you, I did some cat sitting in January when my mum went on holiday for a week and they wouldn't leave me alone either. Aloof, ha.

I prefer a well socialized cat to an excitable dog, but I prefer a lazy dog to a lazy cat. So I guess generally I prefer dogs to cats because most cats aren't well socialized and are very standoffish and most dogs seem friendly and willing to be pet, provided they aren't being let out into the yard and their owner is there when you meet them.

...I like both. I've owned both at the same time. They're both pretty cool animals.

...why is 'cats vs. dogs' a thing again?

I used to very much like them both- but cats more, then I spent a nightmarish two weeks babysitting my mother's dog. I hate that dog. It's the worst dog ever. My opinion on dogs changed.

Cats are just adorable and they sit in your lap and they're not overly needy but they always make you feel blessed when they want to cuddle you. I'm not allowed pets in my current flat, but when I eventually move, I am going to get a cat- and it will be the most spoiled loved cat ever. Cats are just so precious.

Fennec fox? Did someone say Fennec fox?

Okay, I'd better stop before this becomes a cute animals thread (which is still significantly better than bickering over politics in games/movies/whatever).

Eh, those barking, running, hyperactive beasts with large teeth and nails? No thanks. I much prefer cats. Not that cats are perfect, but they aren't dogs which wins them this contest with ease.

That sounds rough. Sorry to hear about all your loss.

In general, I think cats are just hard for people to read. We've become so used to the idea that dogs are the standard of affection that we interpret all animals' mannerisms based on how a dog acts. Cats on the other hand are often stressed out by the type affection we show dogs, and some cats even interpret certain acts (e.g. belly rubs) as being dangerous to them. So rather than trying to understand cats, a lot of people just assume that they're aloof, standoffish, and/or vicious. In reality, they just need time to adjust to changes and be treated as a cat, not a dog. When that happens, the amount of trust and affection they'll show is quite remarkable, especially for a supposedly aloof species.

I'm a dog person through-and-through. Dogs are awesome. Dogs are friendly, loyal, and as pack animals they truly become a member of your family.

Cats are not awesome. Cats are vindictive, evil, treacherous little shits who, as solitary creatures, only ever treat humans as inconvenient mobile tin-openers.

pretty much this.

I have met some cats that are a super rare exception, but for the most part:

Dogs are fucking awesome and love humans and love being great

Cats are fucking assholes who love making messes and just being bipolar jerks in general.
