Both yes and no. I like the story and I think it's well-crafted. On the other hand, it's yet another first-person shooter. If there hadn't been just so damn many of those on the market over the last ten years or more, I might like it a lot more.

I love the story, I like the gameplay but I'm not crazy about it. There is really nothing revolutionary about the gameplay in HL2 and any of it's episodes. Story is what matters in that game. Still, I'm not crazy about it as some folks in gaming circles.

I'm not really a fan of Valve's trademark style of mixing great atmosphere with ridiculously limited route possibilities. I mean I haven't really played it. Just apathetically skimmed through using cheats. Sometimes the atmosphere overshadows the other side, but it wears off.

No, I do not. One of my biggest if not THE biggest gaming disappointment in my life. Story = nice. Too bad it was completely destroyed for me thanks to horrible way to distribute it. Letting you know just a tiny shred of info before another 'OMIGOD GORDON, ROCK FALLS, we must reunite somewhere else' moment and repeating it constantly is the worst idea in storytelling ever.

But that would be fine, if at least the gameplay would be top notch... But it isn't. Apart from impressive physics engine, I cannot say anything good about it. Scripted enemies take away about 50% of the fun, uninspiring weaponry and gunplay another 20%. Horrible vehicle sections ate yet another 20%. That last 10% of fun remained, thanks to said physics and gravity gun which was fun for the first few minutes.

Combine all of it, and you have a game stopper for me. In fact, I was so enraged, I wanted to throw it out of the window after another crappy boat level after Ravenholm. Then I remembered that I bought the Orange Box, with Portal and TF2 - two games I actually really like, so the disc got lucky. But instead of playing it, I just watched the Youtube walkthrough and skipped to the plot parts. Yeah, the story is nice gotta admit...

I didn't think HL2 was the 2nd coming of Christ, but the story was well told and I found it intuitive and enjoyable.

Too many dumb physics puzzles though.

Dog. Definitely Dog.

I'm at about 60% like, 40% meh. It has good mechanics, lovely graphics for the time, and they managed to reference HL1 enough to make it give off a few jolts of nostalgia.

It did have some really great new features, like a very decent physics engine, gravity gun, and the insect pods (the AI that was used there was quite good for its time). The game, the experience itself however, felt a bit empty. I really can't explain it better. I just felt something was missing, a distinct soul to put it like that. Maybe it was the music in the game that was lacking?

And the driving really felt tacked on. far too much driving around in overpowered vehicles.

No. No I do not. I think its pretty bland, and with how hyped up it is, I was expecting more.

To be fair though, I didn't play it when it was new. Rather, I played it last year and was just underwhelmed. And I hate how people talk shit about silent protagonists, but give the Half-Life guy a free pass. Wasn't he one of the characters that popularized the silent protagonist trends?

And give me a dog. I hate cats.

Sure, I enjoyed it.

Indifferent as to the animal, but I'm probably safer with a dog - he might actually do what I tell him sometimes, or at least stop licking himself long enough to save me. Cat will continue licking himself as I scream in agony.

Sure, I really liked it. And the episodes. The first episode was a bit dull.
Anyhow, storytelling is excellent. No cut-scenes, it's all told trough the details in the world.
Good graphics for the time, EXCELLENT facial-animations. Fun shooting, killing zombies with the gravity gun in Ravenholm was awesome.

Only bad part is really the fucking air-boat. Still regard hl2 as one of my top ten games.
But, I will admit it's not for everyone. You have to enjoy the older school of fps games, and the type of storytelling that is used. Also, you have to immerse yourself, at least imo, for the full experience.
And it has not aged extremely well. I still think it looks and feels great, but I understand if some don't.´

edit: Also, dog. Cats are evil. And will betray you.

Is it safe to assume that around 50% of the people voting "no" have never played the game and are Halo fans? (a.k.a. only play Xbox games)

Generic futuristic alien shooter with every second word being involved in some kind of fake science that people who don't know any better think is super cool.

I loved Half Life 2, and still do. Mostly because of it's awesome story, sweet set-pieces and the physics (to whom which I am a sucker for).
I do not however like how combat works, the enemy is way too accurate and there is no way you can dodge incoming fire nor or stun anyone.

But again, love the story and Alyx is hot, has hugged the player like twice in the Half Life 2 story. That's right, you get to 0.5th base with a virtual chick.

It's certainly not bad, but it's not great either.
It's somewhat above 'meh' levels.
